just for giggles, as I've never shot a 300, wouldn't an older guy be geared more towards a 270 if likes life easier?

 

Being a student of Jack O'Conner I agree with you.  I have several 270's (pumps and bolts) and love the round as a effective game getter.   I think the 270 Winchester is the best deer cartridge period.  I also agree the 12 Ga. Slug at normal whitetail  deer ranges is both devastating and efficient.  I  also have a soft spot for the Colonel and his 35 Whelen ( aka the "Poor man's Magnum")  and 338 Winchester for bigger game.

 Looks like the result of using a light, frangible bullet ( like a 150 grain ballistic tip) at magnum velocities.

 

A heavier, more stoutly constructed bullet would not be as explosive.

 

One of the nastiest wounds I have ever seen on a deer was from a 22-250  and a 55 grain varmint style  bullet.

It must have blown 2 pounds of meat off the buck's neck, but did not break it.  The  deer required a tracking job and a second shot.

hunting wayne and onondaga counties my whole life with just a 12 gauge, I cannot say I've ever had a devastating shot on a deer that ruined meat... (that wasn't my fault) haha. In the vitals and in the gray area around it the lightfield sabots have always made a nice clean whole.

I think that picture shows the effect of the bullet hitting a little too high in the ribs with that round, as well as the deer being small.  But at close range, when this happens, a faster moving round is going to do more damage, even if it's a lighter bullet.

 

Many magnum shooters have a harder time controlling the recoil and putting that bullet precisely where they are aiming, especially if they flinch, or the deer moves.

 

I'm not saying you can't use a 300 WM.  It's your choice, but it's not mine.  When I want something bigger than a 30-06, say for Elk, I go to the 325 WSM.  It the shots are expected to be long, I may even go to the 375 H&H.

 

Every hunter has his reasons I guess.

Guess we will see how she fairs come Nov. I'm set up with a 165 Gr Gameking that's out of the barrel of my Savage 114 at 3100 fps. If I'm looking at 50 yd shots at doe, I'm not gonna shoot. If I can get a shooter buck at that distance I will neck shoot. Otherwise the majority of our shots are 100 yds plus. So I'm thinking I should be ok.

A few years ago a hunter was too close to a home, shot at a deer he had already wounded with a 300 WM and the bullet went into the house killing a toddler.  It was a terrible thing, and he was sent to jail.  What I found scary, was the big debate about his choice of firearm, the .300 WM.  The prosecutor, judge and press all seemed to be saying it was a choice that proved he was irresponsible in his choice of a "Magnum" rifle for deer hunting.  They were playing on the minds of the jury there.

 

I never agreed with any of that, but I think it bears keeping it in mind when choosing a hunting rifle.  If anything puts you under legal scrutiny, you can be sure the legal system will look at all of your choices to see if they can use any of them against you to convict you of being irresponsible.

 

I absolutely disagree with all of that, but I am very much aware of it in today's anti-hunting society.

 

Just putting it out there as an aside on this thread.  For me, it's hard to forget stuff like that.

Yup……The antis and the lawyers will find something to pick apart no matter what. If he had used a .243, 30-30 or any other non magnum round they would have referred to it as a "high powered cartridge used to hunt big game". They prey on emotions..its what they do.

Belo, I completely agree with you. When I said a 12 gauge rifled slug can be devastating I meant I didn't mean excessive meat damage. I shot several southern zone bucks over 170 pounds in the last 10 years that dropped in their tracks, (i.e. like they "fell through a trap door"). Of the three bucks that were thus dispatched none had excessive meat loss. So we agree.

There's a lot more to that case then just the use of a magnum caliber......if I'm not mistaken, that was the least of the problems.

Shot this buck earlier this week with a .300 Win Mag, using 180 grain bullet. This was the exit hole. Entrance was maybe 2-3" in front of where the exit is. Didn't lose even a fork full of meat! Wish I would have taken pics after he was skinned.
