yep. You'll need a license. If you can, sign up for your trappers course it's pretty cool and usually quite laid back. I took mine in an old barn and those old timers know their stuff. They enjoy teaching the craft so it will be preserved for future generations

doesn't it depend on what you are trapping and if it is damaging wildlife? Using a box trap to remove a woodchuck from digging under your deck or in your landscaping  is one example.

 

Double edged sword if you don't plan on killing it as the OP noted (if he's not killing them, then what? LOL).

 

You can't remove the animal and then relocate it...that's breaking the law.

what do you plan on doing with the animals you trap?

Relocating to the wood's.I do some work for an elderly couple and they have some Racoons that are not paying rent lol they asked if I could remove them without killing them.

not supposed to live trap and relocate....DEC has a licensing program for nuisance trappers, if you're the homeowner taking care of your own problem, they will direct you as how to dispose of the critters.
