Live From The Woods 2024-2025 Edition

Recommended Posts

Did an afternoon hunt in Geneseo from 3 - 7 pm . It was pretty quiet . Around 4:30 4 doe came from behind me in the gully lot . My scent had to be blowing their way but they didn't appear to be alarmed . They went back the way they had come from and a few minutes later returned . They then crossed over and went into the corn not to be seen again . Later they were in the corn behind my grandson and got spooked . The they had come by me is about 35 yards when they were in the corn . No shots .

Nephew shot a doe tonight, one of the few times I’ve found parts of lungs on the blood trail. My son showed some patience tonight passing a spike and 7 other doe after nephew shot his at 5:30.

The rain stopped yesterday afternoon, so I was out there. About a 2 1/2 hour dry window. Bumped a few already feeding in the field, as I figured I would. Ended up with a mature six at 19 yards.  Drew backkkkk.

Did I ever tell the story of my first bow buck, I never recovered?

How do you think the ending above turned out?

My neighbors Granddaughter passed 11 doe so far this weekend. Saw one big buck but was on neighbors property that is leased so no shot. Yeah i think the same for her tonight. Good luck to him!

His patience is something I wish I had sometimes. Maybe he can teach me something!

My sons patience ran out 13 minutes before the legal end of youth, does were over a knob in the field. Rainy and getting dark,  We made the move and he 10 ringed a smaller doe at 150 yards. She ran right to us and died 50 yards away with both front shoulders essentially useless.

Looks like a warm spell coming the next few days, debating on taking my son down to pa sat for early MZ doe or just waiting for the next weekend for youth antlerless rifle.  Might sneak out with the bow this evening.

I’m heading to NY’s northern zone Friday, for early antlerless week up there.  The weather forecast looks great.  The leaves are just past peak, which is perfect for deer hunting mornings and evenings and fishing mid day.  My favorite time of the year to be up there.

I’m staying thru  the opening weekend of rifle season. I have three tags that I could fill (two either/or and an antlerless) but I’ll be very thankful if I manage to fill just one.  The scenery and solitude are so good up there, that I count every deer at least double what I do at home in WNY.

I’ve been going up there that week for at least the last 10 years and this is the best weather forecast that I can remember.  Might not even need my tree umbrella this year.  It’s great to have free lodging and food (my in-laws live up there) and not need to purchase an out of state hunting license.
