Lawdwaz
I have Verizon DSL and occasionally (RIGHT NOW) the thing comes to almost a complete halt. Does that ever happen to you with your service? It seems like it is happening more and more and I am sick of it. I don't know if they do it on purpose or not to try and nudge people into their FIOS service but it sucks. late last night it was doing it and right now also. I have been doing some serious work today (FAFSA and other important things) that take a long time and are VERY frustrating when the internet is running great, and when not running great it could push me over the edge................ JHC is it frustrating. Soooooo, does your web service slow down like this? I'm ready to tell Verizon to churn butter and move to the Cable Company. After the DISH debacle and this from Verizon I'm loosing my love..........
Doc
I have Time Warner Roadrunner for internet service. Other than the cost, the service itself is pretty darn quick and reliable.
NFA-ADK
Try doing a ping test, that will tell you if you are losing connection. Otherwise 90% of the time I find it is due to the customers computer being infected by viruses, spyware of some other type of infection. Try downloading Malwarebytes from http://download.cnet.com/windows/ it is on the right side of the page and is the 15th most popular download. If you do not want this to run all the time because you already have antivirus then uncheck the box that says enable free 30 day trial. Otherwise just keep clicking next until it is done installing, make sure you update before scanning. After you scan, remove all threats and see if you are working better. Good luck. If you really need help I can take control of your computer and do this for you but try yourself and let me know if you need more help.
Lawdwaz
All the devices in the house are/WERE running like molasses. I just tried to log onto my email and got nothing, then I hit this and BAM it went here. PING test? Refresh my memory please.
NFA-ADK
On Windows click on the run command and type in CMD press enter to bring up a DOS prompt. Then type in these commands. (You can ping any web site that is pingable.) ping www.yahoo.com ping www.yahoo.com /t will ping until you hit Ctrl + Brake to keep it going and see results Ctrl + c will stop it from running and give the results. Loosing a few packets over a few hours is not out of the ordinary but you should not see that many, less than 20 with no long durations in between. NFA-ADK
The other thing to help would be to call the provider when you have the issue. Then they can test from their end and tell IF something is wrong. I always explain this to my agents that you need to document this info with them. They can not fix something if they are not aware it is broken... IF they say everything is OK then it is on your end more than likely you have some form of spyware, virus, Trojan or possible malware. Then try that download.com site or if you want to try another free antivirus scan try this. http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx This is from Microsoft and does not install a resident program and works ok but not as good as the Malwarebytes. NFA-ADK
PS: Do a disk clean up, many people forget this needs to be done periodically. Open my computer or Computer, Right click on C: Drive and click properties. Then click disk clean up. CLick on tools, check now, then check off all boxes and say yes when prompted. CLick defrag and check to see if it is needed. After clean up defrag then do a complete disk check by restarting computer. When the computer reboots do not touch any keys and it will test and try to repair any errors on the Hard drive.

genesee_mohican
All the devices in the house are/WERE running like molasses. If all devices are running slow then that points to an issue with your ISP (Verizon) Give them a call so they can test things and locate the issue. robw
First, I would make sure there isn't anything else running a streaming or online service. Netflix, online video games, downloading music and movies, etc can be real bandwidth hogs. Then go to http://www.speedtest.net and run the test. If the transfer rates are good, it's your PC, run antivirus and anti malware. If everything was slow, then probably a Verizon issue. For comparison, my ping was 44 ms, download 16Mbps, upload 1Mbps. I have Time Warner

Yea, that's the deal. All "stuff" is slow or NOT moving at all when it does do it. Right now it appears to be running pretty good. I'll call Verizon tomorrow...........maybe. Actually I think it is time to give TW a jingle and see what they have to offer.

We DO have Netflix and I know when my daughter is watching something as things do slow down but earlier today and last night nothing else was running. I'll give that test a shot....... Lawdwaz
I just ran that speed test and got this.......ping 719 ms DL speed 0.34 UL speed 0,23 I bet that isn't good. THEN I went upstairs and found that my daughter was on Netflix right now and has been for 20 minutes and my son was on who knows what. I raised some heck with them and they are both off now, I'll check the speed again..... Edited February 4, 2015 by Lawdwaz
Lawdwaz
Now with nobody on except me, here are the numbers: ping 64 ms DL 1.00 UL 0.34 and it went tons faster but those numbers still suck.....................
NFA-ADK
Your numbers are low. I would check with them and see what they say. Explain the speed you are getting vs what they advertise. Otherwise you are on the right track with finding the issue. Does not seem to be a connection issue but a speed issue.
growalot
I haven't read all these but Law we have the same and the same problems...they have rewired our house.... so that is the first thing I tell them when I call about problems...We have had several boxes replaced and we keep the old ones and put dates on them...this is what we have found...they work fine for 2 years...then start crapping the bed as it were. I also spend the time chatting up the employees and sub contractors..They tell me alot..they have each persons system in a ...auugghhhhh can't think of the word...lets just say "module" and these routinely crap out...but they really don't want to go there...also those will cause you to loose "speed" causing your problems and making your "speed" less than what you are paying for...So I let them know I know about this as well. They rarely try to blame us for the problems any more..for I will not ever pay for a service call just because they say so...things return to normal fairly soon after my calls.... The last one were frayed wires that finaly broke...they have been on the hill alot lately ...this whole area here has been having a lot of problems.... Two Track
Another possibility is: if you all are using WiFi and none of the computers/tablets/etc are plugged into your router/modem that your WiFi could be saturated and unable to put through all the data at once. Netflix seems to stream through in chunks of data. I do sometimes see slow downs on my internet when Netflix is being used on multiple devices. Those devices in my house on wifi and I see the slow downs even on the desktop whick is plugged into my WiFi router and I currently have cable service. It is possible that the Wifi router is over-loaded. If it is more than 4 years old and was not cutting edge at the time, it may need to be replaced. But from most people I hear from, DSL service does drop out on occasion. I would recommend testing your speeds by plugging directly into you DSL modem to rule out your Wifi router or determine if the WiFi device is the problem. Lawdwaz
All good help, thank you. Sometimes I wonder if the SOB's at Verizon purposely slow the system down now and then in their veiled attempts at getting me to switch to FIOS. Strangely within a day or two the FIOS literature shows up in my mail box...........coincidence, I don't think so. I wouldn't be surprised if someday there is a big class action lawsuit against them and they have to pay zillions to the folks they boned. I'm probably dreaming................ NFA-ADK
With that amount of bandwidth you will slow down anytime someone is using the internet and streaming or using some other type of large bandwidth service. I would double check that speed test with another computer to be sure and or another line. Then if that computer does the same thing, you verified it is not just your computer that is slow. If you have a separate router that you installed I would try connecting only one computer to it or just one to the router they provided and see if your test results are the same. If you are using wireless that can be an issue. Connect with a internet wire and retest. Wireless speeds for most newer computers is a G standard at 54Mbps or N standard at up to 300Mbps. Any G device in the network will unfortunately result in the router using that speed for all devices. EX: If you have 4 devices using the N standard and one using the G most speeds will be 54Mbps or slower vs all 5 N standard transmitting up to 300Mbps. LAN devices usually transmit at 10Mbps 100Mbps or 1 Gbps. If you have access to the router interface you can do other tests with the router to verify it is not your computer but not all ISP's allow this. That is where the phone call to them helps out as they can test the speed. Keep us informed on your progress, hope you get it resolved! growalot
Before calling...unplugged your router....wait 20 seconds and plug it back in. Wait for lights to flash...then do a speed test..This reboots router..also check all connection..including phone wires...they will ask you to do this any ways...get a jump on them
Kot2B
As much as I hate doing business with Time Warner... I still haven't found anything better than their high speed internet.
