so the rut. you want to take the best 2 weeks of archery and make it doe only for gun hunters? I hope you're kidding. There are plenty of other times in the year to go doe only. Mississippi has the final week of bow either sex, but you can MZ hunt for doe only. I thought that was a pretty interesting take on it.

Yeah it was just  to see what rise it got. I do remember stories from my Father and Uncles that the last weekend of gun was a buck tag turning into an either sex. I know they keep talking about shortening gun but about the only way I could get behind that would be to take the first week (maybe two weekends) and make it doe only in the required areas.

This is interesting to me.  I wasn't aware that there has been a downward trend in trophy bucks in these areas.  My guess would be that these areas are simply getting overhunted.  Becoming a well known trophy area doesn't exactly work to the advantage of big bucks.  You get outfitters leasing up land and getting hunters in to kill these bucks, and before you know it there aren't that many big bucks around anymore.  This happens in LOTS of places.  A place is great for a few years and then everyone wants to hunt it and after a few years the place becomes a wasteland.  This should be a lesson for all those that think it would be great for NY to become a big buck state and to try to attract non-resident hunters to come in.  Yeah, it would probably make some landowners and outfitters some money for a few years, but if you overdo it things will go down hill pretty fast.  Lets not even begin to talk about where all this would leave the resident hunters. 

 

It's widespread numbers decline of the herd, average buck size decline, and the number of trophy caliber bucks are on the decline in alot of states. Not just trophy bucks.

 

There's likely alot of factors that go into it, overhunting one of many.

By looking at all of these posts on this subject as far as charts, graphs , harvest reports and Objectives compared to what I and my neighbors actually see are all pretty far off. Example The 2014 DEC harvest report  and there objectives. They claim that there were 15% less Does taken then they would have like taken. Did they ever think that  there were not that many Does to start with . This is what we actually see. And knowing that the past winter was a Rough one for the animals what do they do for this up coming season. They increase the amount of Does they want taken per. sq. mile.

And as far as Bucks , last year by us they stayed bedded down during the day most of the season. Trail cams proved they were moving around in the dark. Not until the last week to a week in a half did they start moving during the day light or legal hunting hours.

And there were not as many as they seem to think there are.

So I think this NODEN is just another thing to try  to make them look good and try to save there jobs.

Correct me if I am wrong but what I got so far with the 6 pages of talk about NYODEN was that it was not just a State Wide program but it would also be broken down into Zones and WMU 's .

If you look at the 2014 White Tailed Deer Harvest Summary it is broken down by Zone then by WMU and then by Town and County. There #'s are off for my Town. and the Citizen Task Force Results for my WMU were last taken in 2002 that is 13 years ago that was 2 years after the Highest deer take in this state.So as I said the number of deer have been greatly reduced ( a lot more then ) the DEC numbers say.

I am not interested in what the plans are for the whole state  , I am trying to find out what the plans are for my WMU. The map that was posted in the news paper in the beginning had different colored areas , My area is Green , which they have listed as Group 3 and along side of that is NH , What is or does the NH stand for ?.

Ok, so the map you are talking about has to do with yearling buck protection strategy, not population control or doe permits. The WMUs are not being changed as far as DMPs go. They have already released the allocation numbers for DMPs this year.

 

The NH stands for no hunting btw.
