sailinghudson25
Would this be considered baiting? I haven't hunted around downed trees, but I do cut down maples in the winter for the deer to eat.
grampy
I would not consider downed trees baiting.
G-Man
No its not baiting under nys laws, but the trees would have to be fairly.freshly downed to be a draw as deer will pick buds off a tree pretty fast.Esp if only a few
landtracdeerhunter
Yes I hunt on leaners, like six or so feet off the ground. Tipped out by the roots. . Some excellent opportunities too. Have a couple that I well anchored to other trees during certain times of season. Excellent , natural elevated stand.

The late season isn't late enough for the deer to be looking for downed tree buffets. They just ain't hungry enough to count on them for a food source, IMO. growalot
The opportunity you are looking for in a hing cut or blow down area is bedding...when hunting a bedding area once you have figured out how they use that area from a distance , is to position your self on trails to and ones leaving. This being on the favorable wind sides. What landtrac said is true...we have several large blow overs..roots the size of a good sized room along a couple of our streams. They make excellent sitting spots for years and years.
Lawdwaz
The point of this thread is not related to cover from downed trees but whether or not it is baiting when hunting near them.
thphm
I do not think it is if they tell you how to do this. http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7205.html
landtracdeerhunter
These learners are still alive with plenty of leaves within deer reach. They do become a food source, depending on verity when the leaves brown. Nature put them there. I just capitalize on the placement. No baiting of any kind. growalot
I know Lawz...it's just he's asked about hinging in another post and mentioned food... Now whether they are considered baiting if hunted near....Yes it's good for a late winter tide over but hinging is really about cover and bedding most ppl don't create bedding then hunt in it...just making that point to him
