Piebald turkey?

Shot er this evening. Is it piebald or did I shoot someone's pet turkey? It's full of leaves and corn.

I got the fan, the NAP killzone almost decapitated it.

I have never seen a domestic turkey with that coloration...I think it is a red phase piebald...I have seen a couple over the years..I have also seen pictures of a blue phase piebald that is kind of a bluish-grey.....

Well I'll tell the story, I was setting up my climber in a tree for tomorrow morning. Started to walk out and it crossed the path in front of me and went into thick brush along my field. I cut through the brush and ran back to my house to get my bow. Ran back and it was walking back out into the path when it spotted me and darted back into the brush. I snuck up to 10 yards and waited for it to walk into an opening. It did and I hit it right at the base of the neck. Dead on impact.

Looking at that picture looks like had you kept it whole your Taxidermist would have had their work cut out for them. That arrow damn near cut its whole head off! Great shot and congrats on the fine bird

It's a heritage turkey breed called Bourbon Red. My brother raises them. Do a google image search. There is another similar breed called Jersey Buff.

 

They are really good to eat. Enjoy.

I spoke to my brother this morning. Heritage turkeys go for $5/# and up at the farmers market.

Looks like it was breed with a domestic turkey. Happens pretty often with free range birds. Near our cottage there is a farm that the lady has turkeys and a number of the wild ones look like that.
