Well i was just thinking today at work and i was wondering howmany would or would not be for having every county be a carriers county, so long as its not concealed? Just a question really... do you think it would change the minds or deter some of the outlaws from doing something stupid if in the back of their minds there could be someone carrying a gun and can counter act?

i was just curious, i mean i dont think it would solve the armed robberies and armed car jackings and so on but if helped 1 person out of a "situation" then hey...

Me personally i would not be aposed to or have a problem if every county was able to carry... in fact i wouldnt mind being able to carry, you never know who is watching you and waiting for the one vonerable moment you present.

I would support the notion, and I think there should still be concealed carry permits for those who want it. The way handgun permits are set up now is a little ridiculous. For example, I am 19 years old, and have an interest in getting a permit. I feel I should be able to APPLY at 20, because the process will take until I am 21, but I can only apply at 21... Besides they do now stop any crime by making the legal age 21. Criminals still own illegal firearms. I have seen with my own two eyes 15 and 16 year olds illegally carrying handguns.

I prefer a permit process, that is reasonable, includes a NICS check, and requires training and passing a test, to get a concealed carry permit.

I do not think open carry is as good an option.  Besides scaring people who do not know the first thing about guns and are deathly afraid of them, open carry alerts criminals in advance that you have a gun.  That just changes the way they will approach you to get the drop on you.

Think about it.  They know you have a gun, but you don't know they have one.  All they need to do is get the drop on you and at the very least, you lose your gun.  At the worst, you lose your life.  You may get shot without ever seeing where it came from.  I can also see a lot of criminals getting more guns this way.  Not all gun owners have the skill to carry openly and be observant and alert at all times.

Concealed carry gives you the element of surprise without causing concern among the average citizen, who is already nervous around guns.  If you wear a uniform and open carry, the citizens accept it.  But if you are wearing civies and carry, they get very suspicious, sometimes calling the cops.

Concealed carry is the goal my friends.  Nothing less will do.

I have a concealed carry. Up until the past judge was elected, all you got here was concealed. Now it is much tougher to get one, even though the judge himself is a permit holder and hunter, so he is not anti gun.  The thing with having open carry as I see it is you better be trained how to use the gun.  There is always some hero who will try to make of you having a gun and try to prove he is better than the gun.  In other words to me it just seems to open a can of worms most will never be trained to handle. Training will help yes.  But like all training, if you do not use it you lose it.  Yes uniformed officers carry.  But they are trained to handle situations with the hope they never have to use it, and have retraining constantly.  I personally think it is a violation of any legal gun owners  rights to not allow them to carry.  But I can see it turning into a bad situation, especialy for those who feel the need to carry all the time to feel safe. You all know a person that way.  I have a friend who will not go anywhere without as he calls it a "piece" with him.  I mean anywhere. He can not understand why I go places without a gun.  I try to avoid going a lot of places with him as I expect there to be a confrontation.  He is a fair at best shot, and can not handle himself in any way.  If he ever had a time he needed it, the gun to him would be more of a detrement than a help.  I have told him many times his gun would be used on him if he ever tried to use it. If he could carry open, he would flaunt a gun so everyone could see it.  He gets such a false sense of security carrying. Will having an open carry deter someone from confronting you? I seriously doubt it.  To me I would expect more problems carrying open.  If I were allowed to carry open, I would continue to carry concealed.  Should I and everyone have the right to yes.

Annie Hall, Get Your Gun - NYTimes.com

So many people in NY have been brainwashed by the media; in other parts of the country, there is far less violence and far more guns owned. So much of it has to do with people becoming comfortable handling guns from an early age. ... “ I may be cheap, but boiling deer heads on the stove? Nope. Hmmmm...Sounds strange to me, because up here in Steuben Co.  carrying concealed is common....

Personally I  try to avoid anyplace where I can't carry..I haven't been in Westchester Co. since 1977, and that was a business trip, except to land and take off at the airports...

One notable place I go often where I can't carry is Canada...

I justed watched on Anderson Cooper a brutal killing in New Mexico that was never solved. Execution style 2 kids and 4 adults. The kids were 2 and 9. They got away with 6 grand. Does New Mexico have a policy? I thought about this after the Arizona shooting and they carry. I didn't help because it happened so quick. There was this one guy who was going to pull his gun but the threat was no longer there. What happens if you are in that situation and you and the bad guys have your guns pulled and the cops show up. You being the good guy could be shot by the cops. It's a tough one but I think the permit process is good. Just some thoughts.........

this a very good point and i thought about them getting the drop as well.. very good point. concealed will work for me as well. i mean it would prob never happen eitherway but its food for thought. it would be nice be able to carry.

Wth the type of gang criminals we have today vjp's post sounds exactly right... and really, you don't need to carry openly to have a gun for protection.. concealed works just as well... why take a chance?

i should change the post since carrying concealed makes more sence. i figured with todays society Non carriers and antis would like to know whos carrying a gun BUT for the carrier it makes more sence to carry concealed obviously.

By maintaining the concealed carry , you never know if the person next to you is carrying or not . That would be more of a determent for a criminal than knowing someone has has a gun in plain sight and take him out 1st !

yes this is VERY true. i was thinking that before i started the thread but i did not write it, i wanted to see if anyone else was thinking it.  VJP hit it on the head!
