BKhunter
Can anyone recommend a book for a newbie to learn the basics of trapping and pelt care? Thanks! BK Edited April 25, 2016 by BKhunter
airedale
The best source for trapping equipment and how to trap is the Fur Fish and Game magazine, about anything you want to know about trapping can be found. In my opinion probably the best outdoor sports magazine available today, I have been a subscriber for years. Al
surmn8er
Totally agree with the Fur Fish and Game magazine and there used to be a book that I think was called Trapping North American Furbearers but it may be out of print by now.

stoneam2006
Another thing to do is go to the trapping shows....specifically the one in frankfort in late August early sept...there are demos on everything from all kinds of animal trapping to Toby fleshing demos...lots to be learned there in the 2 day show. Not to mention most trapping suppliers on hand willing to talk Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

G-Man
I'll go along with the magazine fur fish and game, go to a local sportsman show and find the trapping booth , talk to the guys there and. See if you can accompany one or invite them to try with you so you can learn. I was lucky my trapping course instructor agreed to go with me my 1st time out to set and showed me the sets I wanted to use ,and recomended set to use in other situations. Told me to call him if I needed help skinning them. I was luck my uncle was a taxidermist and had shown me how to skin , I sold a lot of raw furs until price dropped and I felt comfortable enough to practice on animals that were worthless. They taxidermy skinning really helped when I got unique animals like white raccoons. They sold much higher than fur prices would of brought as person buying them was able to mount them as all toes and claws were attached to hide. In my experiance many trappers are willing to show you as the craft is dying and they can always use a newbie to help in the fur shack.. TRAPPER1227
Trapping is not dying. In fact it is getting stronger and the number of youth trappers right now is bigger than it has ever been.

NY Region 3 Trapper
There are some links on the NYS Trappers Website. Look for Best Management Practices to start. www.nystrappers.org Trapping in Ny is alive and growing. Just certified 37 last week. With the fur market down trapping tends to slow. What trapping needs is more folks to get involved with their local clubs or start one yourself. Guess that would go with a lot of sportsman groups. Jaeger
Hal Sullivan has some good books He also has a great series of small paperback books of trapping humor! Seriously, he does produce some good guides to trapping. And remember, NYS has a trapping mentoring program. A good site to start that is more trapping specific is: http://nytrappers.proboards.com/ A good forum for learning here in NY.
