Is this for real?

The teachers' union in NYS has apparently decided that expanding diversity among it's members is more important than teaching the children to read and write?

I know we have some teachers and spouses of teachers here on HNY. Can someone fill me in on the reasoning behind this? It sounds like that whole ebonics thing that happened a few years ago.

Ok.  Seems like you are correct.  They scrapped the ALST which was the easiest of the certification tests I took imo.  Anyway wtf are people thinking.  Sometimes i cant wrap my head around some decisions people with authority make.  Maybe it will help the kids be more better students?? Lol.

So , if   prospective teachers’ poor reading and writing skills are bad enough that they can't pass a test and are comparative to eighth grade comprehension that they do away with the tests ?  And , that's good ? More dumbing down of America !

Any job where as you get tenured is one we shouldn't support.

Yes- my wife is a teacher.

Tell her to give up her tenure.  i had to be nominated for tenure.  And teachers now have to put a portfolio together and apply for it sort of.  But nobody forces them to do it.  You could easily say no.

Thanks for the responses, folks. Keep them coming.

U.S. school students are becoming some of the dumbest children in the civilized world, regardless of what the taxpayers are forced to spend. I just don't see how lowering the literacy standards for teachers could possibly be seen as a solution.

Dumbing down the test to make certain there is a racial balance of educators seems ridiculous. Yet another nail in the coffin of public perception about teachers. That public perception is partly why more qualified college students steer clear of education. If applicants cannot pass the test, they should not teach. If teachers do a poor job during their first 3-4 years, they should not be tenured. If tenured teachers perform poorly, THEIR ADMINISTRATORS should revoke their tenure through the process negotiated by them and the union. Tenure is not a license to be a $hitty teacher. The process to remove a tenured teacher needs to be revamped but it exists.

Half way through my student's studies, they are required to submit a statement of intent before progressing. The writings are incomprehensible usually. I remember one in particular that looked and read like a random word generator had created it. I have to rewrite many of them to attain a basic level of comprehension for other faculty.

It is a school lawyers nightmere to even consider removing any employee other than Lilly white or not having a student at any level not advance in education especially higher education. ...There are many meetings a team called, tons of paper work, and very ,very careful wording approved. This again unless Lily white. Reverse racism, ha! even having to say reverse in conjunction with racism is ridiculous.
