dbHunterNY
Started some plants earlier like tomatoes, various peppers, and a few zucchini. just put in onions and seed for garden beans. room for a few more things but trying to decide in a hurry what to do. Good thing i did as it's solid rain in the forecast all week and then some. Cucumbers and pumpkins might be going in too. Anyone else have their garden growing?
turkeyfeathers
Told the wife unless we can grow meat , chicken wings or beer we're not planting a garden this year. Tomatoes are only food I won't eat Banana peppers from last year in freezer. Bunnies and chipmunks seem to harvest our beans right at go time every year. Get killed by skeeters watering at night. 2 trips over summer planned. Looking forward to produce section at Wegmans this year. growalot
db...looking like it won't be like last year... I do have peas coming along and the spinach looks great... few Brussels sprouts and cabbage that were direct seeded and of course the lettuce. Some swiss chard that over wintered...but like you rain rain rain has delayed everything...I was going to go buy plants today but they are on the opposite hill top and not going to be in a green house surrounded by metal poles in a storm...lol

God rest the sole of the critter that gets in there and tries to make it out a live. lol i don't do berries because i don't want the work of wire overhead for the birds. to water the garden all i do is turn on a hose bib early in the morning before i get ready for work. Doc
The garden is surrounded by a 4' high welded wire fence with a strand of electric wire about 3" above the ground and another powered strand just above the welded wire fence. I have not lost a plant to a critter in the 10 years since installing all of that stuff. Even the chipmunks get wacked. And it is not just an inconvenient jolt. This fence leaves the bodies behind. Berries- Last year I wrestled with plastic netting, and wound up with a mess that I will never fight with again. We'll see if the birds beat me to them this year. I am not expecting a problem, because I never had a problem getting to the wild berries in time to get a pile of them. Also as a kid I used to pick berries for a farmer, and he never used any netting. I don't remember any of those plants being picked bare or even significantly by the birds or other critters. I have put in enough berries so if need be, I can share some of the harvest and still have more berries than the two of us can eat.

Wegmans does have excellent produce, but I usually find cheaper and fresher produce at the Regional Market. It helps the local farmers too, putting the money directly in their hands rather than thru a third source. I have a small garden, Rhubarb and garlic in one patch, asparagus going in there soon too. I also have quite a few herbs in containers , nothing better than fresh herbs for cooking. I also have four huge sweet cherry trees, a sour cherry tree, four different apples, peaches, pears, and an apricot tree. Plenty of fruit for the birds and us too.
The_Real_TCIII
Just because I had a spot I didn't feel like covering in stone I planted some tomatoes, lettuce, onions, parsley and basil. Oh and my potatoes, I have a potato contest title to defend!
dbHunterNY
Ton of rain all week but today is blue open skies and the sun is shining. Seeds should be turning into spouts and things should be growing good.Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
dbHunterNY
Had some really dry hot days a week ago. Even laying some plastic on the raised beds and newspaper down elsewhere wasn't helping enough. Setup a couple water sprinklers. She's taking off now. When everything is up well I'll share some picks. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
