The "boss" (yeah, its my wife!) loosened the pursestrings and is allowing me to purchase a hunting toy.  I'm in need of a rangefinder and hoping you all can recommend a rangefinder for bowhunting purposes under $225.00.

I use the Archer's Choice RF by Nikon - works great (until it gets dark - then it gets hard to view yardages).  I usually range objects around me again - before low light...

I have seen them on Ebay for less than $225, but that was for ones that had been used.

I have a cheap one, but I've had my eye on the Nikon for a while now.  Its really nice.

what does the display look like?  Is it bright and easily read in low light?

I know wildgame innovations makes some cheap ones, I have the Bushnell yardage pro (?), and they go for @$120. Works great. Some guys go for the ARC, style but those are not really necessary.

My buddies got a Nikon and it sucks, actually i believe he recently returned it. I have a bushnell yardage Pro, it works fine for closer distances > 300 yards but its hard to see numbers at dusk.

I'll second the Yardage Pro. Had mine for a few years, nothing fancy but it works. It was on sale at the time but I know it was under 200$.

Ya yardage pro nothing fancy, but accurate and simple to use, and one 9 volt will last you more than a year.

Thanks to all who replied. My buddy is convinced that I need a Nikon and I should just save up. Funny that a few of you feel it is not worth it. I tend to agree but I often "err on the side of cheap" and end up with a subpar performing piece of equipment. I'm leaning towards the Bushnell but need to re-research the hell out of it.

I have a regular Bushnell Yardage Pro, works great for me. I dont worry about the Arc feature, as I mostly use it to range out objects before the deer show up.

have you guys seen the leupold vendetta? looks really cool but I'm not sure if they're legal to hunt with in new york. it's a bow mounted rangefinder. I googled it and found it for around 200 bucks.

I agree I think the arc is a gimmick.  I used a regualr range finder to range 40 yards from 20 feet up.  It gave me a distance of 40 yards.  When I used an arc model it took off a yard.  I don't think one yard will make a dig difference.
