Robhuntandfish
been thinking for the last couple of years that i would like to get into some goose hunting in Sept. Its too long between turkey season and bow season. I have tried a little early bear without success and was thinking of some Sept early season geese. Any pointers out there on this? I really have to find a spot of course but I am only looking to hunt once or twice in sept and dont want to buy 5000 decoys and layout blinds and moving decoys and 16 honker calls etc. Just want to try for them a bit. In sept is it mostly resident geese? and should I be looking to try to find water or fields to hunt? do i even want to bother with decoys? Any help is appeciated. And i do have a spot to hunt on my lease land but am real hesitant about going there and shotgunning right prior to the bow opener. Cause thats my bread and butter. sodfather
There also is a March season not sure if it’s your area but if you wanted to get a head start ya can. As far as Sept season goes try to find a cut hay field or grass field. A pond works also but geese tend to short stop of the spread on water so if you have floater decoys put them pass your hide. The only thing I can tell ya about goes hunting gear is you can kill birds with 4-6 floater decoys and or a dozen field decoys. But if the addiction kicks in be prepared to fill up the back half of your garage with gear. If you want to ever make it out to this part of NY I’d be glad to set ya up with some silhouette decoys to get ya started or even put a hunt together with a hopefully by then a yelling goat after party.

Yeah am worried it becomes an addiction cause I am weak and already have so many! lol But want to try it out. I have addictions to a bunch of fish and whitetail already. So just want to break it up with a day or two of goose in sept. Would like to start small and I have a pond in mind to try out on some state land. Will look for a field and permission to try it out. One spot I bow hunt the land owner has mentioned another field she has that fills up with geese but dunno if its close to the road? I really dont want to but a ton of decoys etc. Is there a good set that can be used for land or sea?

Big foot are my favorite brand but you can get a set of final approach floaters for $100 a dozen and for field you can get full body Hideon for around $140 for half dozen. If the pond is smaller you can kill birds with 4 floaters. Also if the field you have already has birds coming into it you can use 1 gallon milk jugs painted half black and white and still kill em. If that’s where they want to go you can put anything out
Robhuntandfish
if i hunt a field do you think I can get away with brushing in on a tree line and have them come in close enough for a shot? generally would think they prob tend to go more towards the middle of field , but if I have decoys will they come in to treeline for close enough shots? This way wouldnt have to buy a layout blind can just make a brush one.
Robhuntandfish
i bought some duck decoys a couple of years ago thinking that i would do a little duck hunting after i got a deer for the freezer, but now i realize that will prob never happen cause i am chasing big bucks then. And by the end of deer season everything here is about iced up and my boats are in storage. But sept I cant hunt deer so want to get out for some hunting. I am still also scouting for a little early bear again but that just seems like a needle in a haystack.
helmut in the bush
I would also like to get in on some of that early season goose hunting, 15 bird limit would make a cool tailgate picture
sodfather
Generally they don’t like the tree line cause of threat of predators. You can use a sleeping bag or even a piece of burlap to slip in. Just get your weed wacker out to cut up some grass and cover yourself up in it. Lay your spread out with a couple real decoys close to you so the look at the deeks and not this 200lb hump in the field lol

But for me I usually duck hunt when the winds are not in my favor or I’ve been burning a spot out. Also rainy misty days I’m duck hunting

I think you'd have better luck making a brush blind out in the middle of the field.

Yes I’ve done that, the keel on the bottom makes the lean but again if your in a field they want to be in you can put out coyote decoys and they will land

I like the Real geese silhouettes, the 2 dimensional feature and you can carry a lot of them, and they on't take up half of your garage. The down side, they don't work well floating
helmut in the bush
Find a corn field that is being cut for silage, set your decoys about 25yds away from the standing corn and put you chair 2 or 3 rows back in the corn. An easy set up and very effective.

But since its early season I think you'll be perfectly fine. Aim for the head and be ready for a finishing shot if its not dead when it hits the ground. 1
