DirtTime
Those Eastern Newts are all over the place in the Schoharie Valley. When we camp out there you have to watch the ground where you walk after a rain storm because they come out in droves! They turn green after a few years, if I remember what I read correctly, it's because that's when they become adults. Cool little creatures for sure. Just don't put one in your mouth. landtracdeerhunter
Their are several groups of people that celebrate the annual salamander migration from dry wintering grounds to wetland areas. It only happens one night. I had the luxury of joining such a group in Ohio a few years ago. No alcohol allowed. Never seen a bunch of people having such a great time in a 40 degree rain storm, LOL. A wife’s coworker participated in this near Scoby hill dam by the 219 extrension a few years ago. Said it was so much fun.
erussell
My daughter and i use to walk the roads and fill a bucket after it rained so they wouldn't get squished. Dumped them in swampy areas in the woods.
landtracdeerhunter
Ohio residents take their salamanders seriously, I had to talk my way out of getting fined for stepping on one. I didn't see that little bugger under that leaf. True story. Edited April 29, 2018 by landtracdeerhunter
