WNYBuckHunter
Tonight I am finally going to get out to the range and get my new shotgun dialed in. Ive been fondling it since I bought it back in January or February, but with everything going on, and all of the crappy weather I havent even gotten to shoot it yet. I am also bringing my 223 to play around with. Should be a fun evening!

upstaterifle
You can shoot on state land.... as long as there are no postings for No Target Shooting, and you are over 500 feet from any structure. If it is an area that you are not sure of, call and talk to the ranger for that area. That's what I did, just to confirm everything I had read and been told....still would be nice to have a range in the area I could go to whenever I want though rather than driving nearly three hours round trip. Here is how is is stated on the DEC website under their use of State Land Regulations; section 190.8_bb: --"No person shall possess breakable targets, including but not limited to clay pigeons, on State lands and no person shall target shoot at breakable targets, including but not limited to clay pigeons and glass containers, on State lands. Unless legally engaged in the act of hunting, no person shall discharge firearms on State lands posted or designated as closed to target shooting." I prefer to shoot at the range with friends though. Its a very very nice club.
WNYBuckHunter
So I just got back from the range, had a great time. The shotgun shoots very well, but its not much fun to shoot. I put 23 rounds through it and my arm is killing me. Heres a picture of some of the paper, the one on the left was getting the scope adjusted, and the other two were a couple of the best groups. Im liking the Hornady SSTs, they group pretty well, and Id like to see what they do off of a good bench rest. I am also going to try out the Remington Premier Accu-tips to see how they group. The next pic is the range.
Lawdwaz
And a solid bench, safe back stop, trash cans etc. wouldn't be a bad idea.

Well, the trash cans were behind me. My post reply was to the folks saying to just go and shoot on State land. An organized, well thought out New York State owned range is what I'd like to see. Your range pic looks great. What did you use for front and rear rests with the shotgun?
upstaterifle
It was probably to my question....great info. Definitely alot more fun at the range.
WNYBuckHunter
What scope do you have on the shotgun? Just a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4x32. Its a solid scope though.

Your range pic looks great. What did you use for front and rear rests with the shotgun? My shoulder in the rear and my hand in the front with my elbow resting on the bench. When I shot the groups I rested the forearm on some sand bags, but still held the rear. I honestly feel like someone hit me in the shoulder with a sledge hammer. I let my friend that was there with me shoot it, he took one shot (which was dead at 3 inches high in the center at 50 yards), put it down and said he would never shoot it again. I will never put more than a box or two through it without a lead sled again.
Doewhacker
Welcome to the 12 gage 870 club..haha Just imagine what it feels like to be on the recieving end of the bullet... ??? Were you using 3 inchers?
Culvercreek hunt club
I hear you Doe. I would rather shoot my .06 than my 12ga.
ny hunter
I just bought a cantiliver barrel and scope combo,I have not shot it yet.The price was right.
Doewhacker
I hear you Doe. I would rather shoot my .06 than my 12ga. Same here, 7mm kicks way less than a 12 and I don't mess with 3 inchers except for turkey loads.
