  1. I just read something else that said it was closer to the 30-30 as well and that has taken more deer than anything over the years. Ammunition looks cheaper than .308 as well for target shooting in the off season.
  2. i assume it is fine from what I had read on the DEC site as long as it was in a soft point. Always get good info on here though so I thought I would throw it out there.
  3. you can get five round magazines for it and the round pretty close to performance of a .308 other than range. I currently have a Remington 750 in .308 however not as happy with it as I would like to be. Where I am hunting there is nothing that far and it can be thick at times. Thought the Mini would be a good fit. They are very reliable from what I have read and been told.
  4. Not for this season, but starting to think I might want to trade my rifle for something different and this is consideration.
  5. Thought someone on here would know best. Just wondering if you can and if so, has anyone has ever hunted in NY with a Mini 30 in 7.62x39?? I know you can get it in soft tip and I have seen 154 gr rounds available.
  6. I've heard that scent covers can be better, especially acorn. Anyone else ever try anything like that?
  7. Thanks Culver. That's what I thought but a friend of mine directed me to the page and we couldn't agree on what it was saying.
  8. I read on the DEC site that you could now get a DMP in northern zone: "Amend subdivision 6 NYCRR 1.21 ( to read as follows: ( Open season. [southern Zone] DMPs are valid during any [southern Zone] deer hunting season. [Northern Zone DMPs are valid during the Northern Zone regular big game season and during the Northern Zone muzzleloader season following the Northern Zone.".....here is the link to it on the DEC site. Am I reading this wrong? On the DMP availability and probability map, pretty much the entire northern zone still says NO DMP's available.
  9. I personally believe that more definitely needs to be done. Not just with kids but with adults as well. There are enough techno distractions for us now, suggesting activities for us to do and things for us to by. Word of mouth and volunteering are always going to be the front line in getting more hunters out there in the woods, but sadly in today's world those are not enough. Sites like huntingny are great and there is tons of information out there if you go looking for it. I think that is the main problem; awareness or the lack thereof for the current non hunter. Most people these days need to be sold on something if they are gonna go for it. You see all these advertisements made to attract people to the Adirondacks for hiking, fishing, kayaking, rock climbing and a multitude of other outdoor activities.....but you never see anything promoting hunting except for some big hunt out west. It would be nice it see some mainstream info on hunting and the promotion of the seasons the way you see coverage on every other outdoor activity but hunting. I am sure there are folks in their 20's, 30's+ who take up things like kayaking and skiing or fly fishing now and as a continued life long passion. Many of them probably had a friend who introduced them to these activities, but I'm sure there are a good number who decided it was time to do it because they saw an advertisement for it. Why not have more mainstream media out there promoting it?
  10. Does anyone know what the average age of subscribers on here is for this site?
  11. Defrazzle, what kind of camera is that you are using?
  12. State Lands Interactive Mapper. This is a great tool that a moderator on here showed me. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/45478.html
  13. No snow is no good for a lot of people I have talked to this "winter" and that is understandable. Do you think that this mild winter could really turn out well for hunting next year?
  14. Ok. Good information. Thanks for all the input. Why would anyone get one of the "target/sportsmans" classification if you can get the CCW then?
  15. So it is fine to hunt with a CCW permit as long as you are in an area which allows you to hunt with a handgun?
  16. Thanks for the info Eaglerider. I have been told that it is hard to get a carry and conceal in NY. Looking into getting my regular pistol permit this year and wasn't sure if there was a specific type. Now I know, "target/sportsman" license classification. Can you have this classification for other areas other than the municipality where you are applying for the permit? If I live in Albany county for example, but hunt in Saratoga county and Schenectady counties for the most part.
  17. Went up on the state land myself up just past Lake desolation twice and didnt see anything. A bit of sign. A friend of mine belongs to club up there and went with him and some guys from camp there. a couple times. Nothing for me but I know they got a few over the season between both muzzle loaders and rifle.
  18. If you want to have a pistol with you when hunting, do you have to have a conceal and carry permit or just your pistol permit? I hope that's not a dumb question.
  19. Can you get a deer that young with such a spread?
  20. Would be nice to have that same pathway listed at the bottom of every page in addition to it being at the top already. Then you don't have to scroll all the way to the top every time.
  21. I find the best way to navigate is to use the think gray Forum "tracker" at the top when moving back through pages. It shows your path of clicks as you go deeper into a topic with the point you are at all the way to the right. This will also refresh the topics you have already checked out when you get back to that main page so you know which ones you have read already. If you use the navigation arrows within your web browser nothing will refresh.
  22. Does anyone ever take Bear in account when they are working on food plots? I always hear talk about brassica, buckwheat, beech trees, turnips, etc but I have never really heard anyone say something about a good rasberry plot.
  23. Yea the lead is a good point. My brother is an environmental consultant and he has had to come up with some plans for companies to clean it all up when they want to use the site for something else. Well looks like I will have to make some phone calls to the local clubs. There are two relatively close to work. Would be a great thing to do on the lunch hour.
