Another question Predate:

I found these baby hens (poults of the woods???) and left them. How quickly do they grow up?

I’m going to need to hit the timing right since they are right on the path and I saw evidence of another forager in there today.

I would check back in 2-3 days.

Crappy,
Can you post a close-up pic of the chants? I need to inspect the false gills.

To heck with the mushrooms!  The burl at the base of that tree is something.

Predate- what’s your mushroom pack look like? I need to start carrying something besides a shitty drawstring.

Tbh I usually just grab which ever reusable shopping bags I find hanging in the pantry. I usually take 3 or 4 since I like to keep certain mushrooms separate from the others. I'm sure it's quite comical seeing me carry an armload of bags around the woods.
By next spring I'm gonna invest in some mesh bags.
What I need is to hire a caddy. I'd triple my harvest if I didn't have to tote my own shrooms. Lol

You're too kind. Foraging really is fun. I enjoy it for many reasons. Some of which are it keeps me in better shape, it's a great stress reliever, I get to see the flora & fauna as it progresses throughout the year, virtually no equipment is needed, its mentally stimulating and the thrill of finding some yummy fungi is satisfying. My wife and I enjoy wild edible plants & fungi. We've even rolled around the idea of starting a commercial mushroom farm.
I'm always glad to help. Keep those pics coming because mushroom season is gonna start to wind down after hens and shaggy manes. It's also almost time to switch gears into hunting mode!!!!!

friend got about 75lbs worth yesterday8464.thumb.jpeg.892f8e8e4dce7e48cb9ee42ce23bc68b.jpeg
Greedy!
Haha just kidding.
Fungi are just the fruit of the mycelium. As long as they are picked carefully so as not to disturb the Mycelium or better yet cut above ground level, they will usually fruit in the same spot year after year.
Always good to take notes of date, location, temp, ground moisture, etc.

Predates knowledge is spot on again!!! Went back three days after I found the “poults of the woods” and they grew to a perfect size and were left alone.

Also found a big-un that’s a little past prime but will be used as the mushroom duxelle for a venison Wellington

And finally would this be a shaggy mane?
