Hunting with that double side by side he was more than likely using Buckshot. I remember old timers speaking of using Buckshot and shooting the Deer at fairly close range like you would a rabbit, I bet a lot of deer were wounded back then.

When I first started hunting in 1970, NJ only allowed buckshot for deer.  Slugs weren't even legal.

Piper Cub / Super Cub with coyotes hanging from the wings! Aerial hunting in the 1950s... and it's still done today in areas of high coyote density on livestock ranches in the upper Great Plains south into Texas.

I once saw an old photo of a team of Moose rigged with harnesses for logging.

Michigan Bear hunter Art Jackson and his 1943 record Black Bear. State game managers measured the beast at 6' 6 1/2" long and 5' 7" in girth. Its hind feet were 9" long and 4 1/2" wide. and its front feet were 8" long and 5 1/2" wide. Reports say the bear weighed 873 pounds. Art killed 109 bears during his 70 year hunting career.

A few years back a bear about that size was taken in Northern NJ of all places.  It was a state record and was done in a full body mount that now resides at the NJ F&G Hackettstown Outdoor Museum near the Del Water Gap.
