I brought a venison sausage, and it was good.  but isn't is illegal to sell venison in NYS ?

Actually blur, I thought it was illegal to sell venison too.  Perhaps they had a permit or are exempt under law.

I think I have heard of some New York City restaurants serving venison. It's probably a case of getting the proper permits and buying strictly from deer farms.

I believe that is a law referring to only wild killed deer

It is most likely from the deer farms. There are Fallow deer farmed in many locations in NY and a lot of it does head down to the city

Yup deer farms are ok to sell their meat, at a smaller stand like that they may very well be selling wild game and with the proper permits it is ok. There is a noticable difference from deer farms to wild game as far as taste.
