crappyice
My buddy shot a 5 pointer yesterday and continually commented about how much he likes his coat so I am going to see what I can do about doing a fur-on wall display and euro the head as a thank you for being so generous with his land, toys, etc.. I purchased the “orange bottle” stuff and started to scrape the hide after picking some meat from the skull today. I’ll try to keep up with pics and if anyone sees any pitfalls or has any suggestions before I really dig in, please let me know. That’s my scraping pole...it’s buried about 2’ in the ground. The crate helps keep the good angle Clearly I already F’ed the tail but oh well. Steve D
Sound like a great project. One thing that may help is salt the hide for 24 hrs. then use a hog scraper to get the smaller/stubborn areas of meat off before tanning. Look forward to reports on your progress. Oops forgot the pic. Edited December 14, 2020 by Steve D
crappyice
So I’m following the orange bottle directions http://blog.flemingtraps.com/2013/12/05/trappers-hide-tanning-instructions/Did some more scraping and my first batch of salt (Step 2). I folded and rolled the hide and put in the garage..came back 20 minutes later to find some serious “leakage”. I tied some rope around it and it is now resting over a bucket for 24 hours.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

crappyice
Scraped off the first layer of salt and this is what I got...resalted and rolled for another 24 hours. I was surprised how much liquid was drawn out from the first salting. I’m not too concerned about it being soft as it will be a wall hanging. I do hope to make it smoother so I imagine I need a stretching frame for that. Or can I “pin it up” on a flat wall of my shed?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk You can stretch it out now I stand on it and pull it back out or clamp it to my work table and pull it in all directions. Stretching it would be nice but I never want to put holes in them. Also I always end up popping the end of the tail off. Kmartinson
Just don't pull on it too much when you first take it out. Be gentle with it while its really wet. As it dries up the loose follicles will tighten up. Also it naturally will shed a little. I never let it dry before degreasing. I just mix up soap solution and rinse it. Kinda agitate it and then rinse it in warm water changing it until the water is clean. Edited December 17, 2020 by Kmartinson
