Team Hoyt
Going out tonight for some coyotes hopefully. Kinda new to this predator hunting. Figure were going to stand in a open field. Do we place the call upwind or down wind from us? And how far away

You want to be able to see your call and shoot to it.. movement is helpful also.. Its tough to get predators to come in any way except downwind of the call. They use their nose like a deer. Use landscape features to force them into openings across wind. Roads and water sometimes will get them to come crosswind. Good luck and let the deer gods be with you.
moog5050
Upwind or crosswind depending on where you are intending to pull them out. A perfect scenario requires them to show themselves before getting downwind of call and you. We usually set the caller 60-70yds away but it is set specific. Have fun! Gencountyzeek
Definitely up wind, like moog said 60-70, we've done up to 100 yards. They will 90% of the time try to get down wind of the call. Good luck tonight, ill be heading out in a few hours too.
WNYBuckHunter
At night I place my call right under my gun tripod. Unless you are hunting with an all thermal setup, you want them to look at you so you can see their eyes shine.
