So what is wrong with this tree and ......

So what is wrong with this tree and what kind is it? I think I know but I am going from a memory from almost 34 years ago.

 

Edit: Thank you for the help, it is a Ash tree as I suspected and the Emerald Ash Borer got to it as I had also expected. I will let the lady that asked me for help with it know tomorrow.

Looks like it's an ash tree and it has been infested by the Emerald Ash borer bug.

Emerald Ash Borer got into it - then the wood peckers when after the larvae.

Have alot of ash trees on our property that are looking like that.

Yep it’s an ash tree.

Thank you everyone, I thought it was an ash tree because I remember cutting them years ago with my father in our firewood business, but I was 16 when he died (86) so I was not sure my memory was correct on the type of tree. If the tree was correct I had figured that is what it was, though I had never had any dealings with the Emerald Ash Borer so I was not sure about that either. Thank you all very much for your help.
