We're looking to adopt a family dog...

Well I never thought my wife would bring up this topic but we've been discussing getting a family dog. We've had fish and a dwarf hamster that just passed after 1 1/2 years. My kids are 15 and soon to be 11. We have a good sized home and decent sized fenced yard. We are looking at the following breeds: Shih-Poo (mix between shitzu and poodle) and Puggle (mix between a pug and poodle). We know one family who bought a Shih-Poo at Vanity Pups in Bayside and they are happy with it. Been doing lots of research on both breeds. Read bad reviews about Shake-A-Paw in Hicksvile and Canine Corrals in Huntington where the dogs come from puppy mills in the Midwest with illnesses up the wazoo. I welcome any suggestions on these breeds as well as trustworthy kennels where we can see them and possibly adopt.

You should never BUY a dog from a store. You can almost guarantee getting ripped off and getting an ill animal. I would suggest using www.petfinder.com and finding a dog at a shelter that fits your needs.

You can find pure breeds at the shelter but if you can't I suggest finding an actual breeder and buying directly from them. As opposed to a dog that came from a puppy mill and is being sold at your local store. Whatever you don't go to the Northshore Animal League, they are a scam. I have used the Town of North Hempstead Animal shelter to adopt my lasttwo dogs. See picture attached.

P.S. You can't have a greater companion to your family than a dog.

Deerthug,

My kids just got a dog from TLC Doggie day spa in Huntington. He has the small breeds, Maltipoo, some others also. The owners name is Shawn, he is a standup guy no puppy mill stuff going on here. Worth checking out.

Thanks Gone I will look into that place.

I agree about some stores that get their supply from mills. But my parents had good luck with NSAL when I was a kid and so did my brother in law 5 years ago. But I will consider town shelters as well. We are looking for young pups and I'm not sure if I'll find one that age at the shelters.

And here is the new addition to our family . . .

He is 9 weeks old, 2 1/2lbs, Malta-poo (Maltese & Poodle mix). His name is Chewy (Named by my son after Chewbacca from Star Wars, although the rest of us prefer Milo) We'll see which name fits better over the next few days. We are going to try crate training starting tonight. Hopefully we'll get some sleep or . . . maybe not. LOL! Brings back great memories of my childhood. :)

I have a Maltese. She's my baby. Problem with Maltese and Maltese mixes is grooming since they have human like hair instead of fur. I spent $80 not including tip every time I take her to the groomers. I've learned more about knots and split ends from my dog then from any women I've been with.

$40 is a bargain considering chains like PetSmart charges $60 and the last time I tried to save a few bucks by going to PetSmart, they butchered up her hair. That's why my fiance insists on this swanky place on the upper west side. I pay $12 for my own hair cut. told my barbar he's in the wrong business.

The place we got Milo was TLCDoggy Day Spa on East Main Street in Huntington. It is basically a grooming place privately owned by a stand up guy named Shawn. We were there for about 2 hours yesterday and I have to say, at least 15 dogs were brought in and came out looking great. Check out their website: www.tlcdoggydayspa.com

I got my rescue dog from petfinders and he is the best dog. He is a black lab mix with flat coat and has a white patch on his chest. Have had him for two years last month he is 3 years old and just a great dog in every way.
