I am not against the youth day.. but I think it is unnecessary as well... everyday can be youth day without keeping adult hunters out of the woods... those 8000 youths don't need a special day to have someone take them hunting... take them hunting every day.. now that would be special!

At the risk of whizzing off those who like this idea, I hope I can express my view as well without coming under attack. I think this youth special youth stuff is BS. Having grown up without a father in the home, it was my uncles who introduced me to hunting and fishing. The time we sent together was some of the most meaningful of my life and I looked forward to each opening day "trout season", "pike season", "bass season", wood chuck hunting, "squirrel season", "bow season for deer", "gun season for deer" and then beagles for "rabbit season". It was not only the "hunting" aspect but also the time with caring adults, their support and encouragement, the stories and laughing, the entire experience that came with the preparation for and buildup to the experience of the coming "season". Fishing since about seven years old and hunting since about age 13, I am as active and excited each year at 53 for the coming of each "season". With my own kids grown and gone, now days I have nephews to keep pumped up, and we hunt on the land I now own. I have come a long way from the little kid growing up in the middle of the city, who likely without the influence of my grandfather and uncles, would have had an entirely different life than I do. I have been an active game club member over the years, a county level sportsmen representative and introduced both kids and adults to the joy of hunting. After all this chatter, I guess I don't understand the need to carve out a few days to put young kids along with their adult "companion" in the woods for additional opportunity to take deer or turkeys. I guess I'm a bit jaded in my older years, because I see this driven as much by adults wanting to get an upper hand to take game early under the guise of doing something for "kids" than actually doing anything for young hunters. I just don't see the need for special seasons, when for me every season has always been "special", and with almost three month long deer season's in New York, there seems plenty of time and opportunity to help shape and mentor new hunters both young and old to experience hunting season as something "special" and not just a chance to shoot an animal. I believe that it should be muzzleloader/shotgun only (like this weekend youth season in Iowa). Being able to legally parade around with a buck with a ceneterfire rifle hole in it during archery season invites alot of shady activity, especially as understaffed as ENCON is already...

Here's what I learned: 1. Do not shoot a 20 yard target with a 40 yard pin. 2. Mountain lions don't kill hunters, buddies who think its ok to climb the tree to the target get your arrow and then throw it at you when you aren't looking do. 3. If your buddy is overbowed, don't stand near him when he draws back. 4. It is not ok to take a phone call when walking through the woods. 5. You can shoot an arrow without a nock, but accuracy is greatly diminished. 6. As long as the target does not move, gives me time to range it, ask my buddy if he could stop talking on the phone, and then lets me shoot, I have a 35/36 chance of killing it.

I was inspired by all of you and went out and shot a nice Grey this morning, had so much fun I plan on going back tomorrow. : )

Same here got chigger bites all over my feet and ankles from the island and then went upstate and got 5 bee stings from ground hornets and poison ivy. Talk about bad luck!!!!!

The shape of the vane does not matter honestly provided you have no clearance issues with the rest you use. Speed doesn't matter either when considering what vanes to choose. Its just that Blazer's are currently the cool thing on the market. Feathers are still the best for stabilizing, they are just finicky in wet conditions.

I agree that hunting shows are very unrealistic for us hunting in the northeast. I watch them for entertainment purposes only and because i'm a hunting fanatic and that's all i think about. But you have to remember something. Most people say i would love to see these guys come to where i hunt and shoot a 180" deer but if a 180" deer doesn't exist where you hunt it it would be impossible for them to shoot one. The thing is i know a lot of guys that let these shows get to their heads and only want to shoot 150s or bigger in NY. I have no problems with that but they might go a few seasons or a lifetime before it actually happens in some areas in NY. I use trail-cams to help me decide what i am going to try to shoot in the fall. i have numerous cams out all summer and if the biggest buck i get is only a 100" deer im not going to sit in my stand all season waiting for a 150" to come by and pass up the 100" if he presents a shot.
