  1. always prefer tree stands. Scent management is often a little easier, and you get a much better vantage point. See deer frequently further out.
  2. guns cool, but the socks are cooler. JK,.... good luck.
  3. Okay. It's done. Just needs a trip to the range.
  4. a little to late for Gander I think.
  5. New Bushnell Trophy Red Dots' has adaptive lighting technology. Sights automatically adjust diode intensity to balance for natural light. Also serves to extend battery life. Going with this sight: http://www.bushnell.com/hunting/rifle-scopes/trophy-red-dot/1x-28mm-multi-reticle#
  6. On the red dot, how much hunt time do you get out of the battery?
  7. pissed off 400 pound kitty, limited line of sight, no way to back out safely..... this proves that there are no atheists in foxholes.
  8. saw that on Facebook the other day. amazing story.
  9. Powerbelts are crap, sold by Snake Oilers to the hunting community by BPI (a company of fools dealing in trash wrapped in pretty packaging). Wait I take that bake, their slings are okay. I have yet to see a PB not fragment into tiny pieces of lead and copper, and I have never seen one exit, ever! Zero weight retention. I lost a nice deer to one, and will never shot them again. The don't hold up to bone at all. Try the Hornady SST or the TC Shockwaves, you will be amazed how devastating one of these rounds are. If you can find the Federal Fusion ML bullets they are very reliable performers.
  10. Thanks Borngeechee, It looks like a great set up. Perfect for swamp donkeys.
  11. The issue isn't side mounted, its forward mounted. Scout scope magnification ranges tom fix powers as low as 2.75x to 4x. Burris and Leatherwood make variables that are 2-6x 32mm. The field of view on the Leatherwoods are 19' at 100 yds (at 2x) down to 6.5' at 100 yds (6x). So not terrible, and intact better than many rifle scopes. The beauty of the scout style is that allows you to keep both eyes on the target when acquiring it in the scope, They are also very fast handling, and permit instinctive style shooting on moving game (lead and follow through like wing shooting which is difficult on a traditional mounted scope). Years back before extended eye relief scopes were available commercially people used pistol scopes as scout scopes. So fields of view were very limited. I know a lot of experienced hunters who hunt the thick pines of Southern Maine, Central New Hampshire and Vermont. They swear by set ups like this because of the tight cover conditions getting to and from stands. A few do use red dots on 44 cal carbines with similar logic. They have great success.
  12. post a pic of that rifle Borngeechee, please......
  13. The timing of this thread couldn't be better. I was just looking at a Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag, and was thinking that it would be fun to use as a tight cover brush gun for deer too. I was even thinking about putting a little Bushnell red dot on top of it. I would think, as you all have written, within 50 yards or there about it should be like Thor's Hammer on a whitey.

Anyone have experience with either the James Valley Gels or the Mohr's Widow Makers? James Valley is a gel and it seems to me that Gel's last longer. My guess is the Mohr's would do well on a cotton wick. Any thoughts?
  15. The Shield has a great natural point to it. I really like it a lot.
  16. The Shield is really nice, I carry one as an off duty. Also in 40.
  17. Thanks. I just need a guy who wants to buy it at this point. I'm tempted to put it up for sale and just be done with it all together. Too many variables, I'd buy another lever action for hunting in the swamps.
  18. get a 40 S&W, I carry a Glock, it's what my agency pushes more than anything else. The 40 is a bit more stopping power than the 9, recoil is the same and ammo is more or less the same price. The Glock is simple to operate (basically pull and fire, like a revolver), and very is reliable. They aren't pretty but they do the job. Believe me.
  19. I really don't think its the glass but would be willing to try a different scope.... Why not trying everything else.
  20. Hopefully that's all it is, the Town of East Hampton came within a stones throw of doing this last Feb. The DEC was completely behind their effort. In the end it didn't happen but I think that was because bad weather set in.
