The state has a new Tapanzee project that isn't 1/3 of the way across the Hudson and its $1 Billion over budget already. They'll be raiding all the coffers to pay off that one before tolls can go up even a nickel. BOW funds are an annual budget target like everything else. It's use or loose and then don't ask for more next year. I also think trying to play out a deer issue like a federally regulated waterfowl species is like comparing apples to oranges. I can't even think of one example where the same logic was ever borrowed from one program to the other. If you know of one please pass it on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I did read your link and while there maybe antis on CTF there are also hunters. Assuming that the antis won how would a broke state manage the herd? The DEC isn't staffed to do so and village by village efforts are a waste. Just look how the Northaven and East Hampton projects couldn't get off the ground. I'm only saying that this one can probably be taken on face value. I don't believe there is a bigger agenda in play here no matter how much we try to read the tea leafs. It's always about a buck to doe ratio for them. I live in one of those affected counties. Hell you wanna shoot doe all month put a ladder stand in the oak on my front lawn and have at it. As far as I'm concerned you make Oct doe only in Suffolk. But I do think we are woefully over regulated by the DEC. They want to reduce numbers of doe. Let us doe like other states do and hunt over minerals. It boggles the mind why some one can out in a field of Biologic thrown n grow and that's okay. But a lick isn't? I've hunted in states where you can shoot over minerals and it can easily turn into a hen party of doe. Especially in late fall when the natural vegetation starts drying up a bit. Just sayin. Anyways before this turns into a pissing match. Happy Memorial Day fellas. And remember those who serve(d) when we're flippen dogs and pulling up beer can tabs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Doc- did I miss something?,... I just read the entire proposed item, the Citizen's Task Force doesn't appear once in the language of the narrative that I saw. Also on the link you posted there is no roster of membership or links to a membership page.... My guess is since it is public it is something any of us can try to join. Anyway here it is on the DEC page: http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/101798.html

Just a guess, and maybe a little rooted in the number of deer skeletons I found while turkey hunting.... maybe, just maybe the deer biologists are killing two birds with one stone here. First to crimp some more of the doe population and overall take some pressure off bucks during the early and late seasons in certain units. This might allow buck numbers to start coming up. These units would start to produce more bucks over time. Its a deer biologist driven regulation.

Thats a great rifle and a slammer of a round. I used to have one, only liked 250 gr bullets. If you're looking for a sweet Semi look at the BAR Longtrac's. I have one in 270, and its nearly bolt action accurate with lower recoil than the Remi Semi's.

I have both '06 and 270 Win (and WSM). There is a lot of over lap, but overall I enjoy both calibers a lot. The 270 is a bit flatter and when I've gone out west and down to SC and VA, I prefer the 270's. They just do better shooting across open fields. At 3000 fps, a 130 gr bullet 1.1" high at 100 yds is in the X-ring at 200 yds. I love '06, but the 270 does everything the '06 will to whatever walks on hooves.

Glass for a 243 Win Mountian Rifle
eagle rider replied to eagle rider's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Already got the gun and not selling it. Savage 14 American Classic. The Accurrigger and the pillar bedded stock make for a really accurate rifle. Plus the dark checkered walnut stock with black caps on the grip and forend finish it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Glass for a 243 Win Mountian Rifle

Was also looking at a Vortex last night. 2-7x32. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Hey there fellas- been and on and off for a while, I hope everyone is doing well? I'm setting up a 243 20" rifle (bolt action Savage 14) as a handy mountain deer and 'yote rifle. I'm seriously thinking about a 2-7 x 32 MM Nikon Prostaff on it. I really don't anticipate shooting past 100 yds with it in the field. My other choice is a 2-7x 32 Leopold VX II (already own that one but it's being repaired by Leopold at the moment because I wasn't focusing). Anyway, what do you think about the idea?

I have a 22" 270 Browning A-Bolt. So in some respect I do have a MR length 270 bolt action in the safe already. The question here is do I jump at the 270 CDL or not. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Need your thoughts an opinions here,... I may have struck a deal for an swap on a 114 Savage for a used (in good shape) 700 CDL from a gun shop. The CDL is a 24" barrel and is in 270 Win. I'd like to make in Mountain Rifle Length. Am I taking a huge chance sending it to a smith to cut the barrel 2" and re crown it? What do you think?

So how didi the 4W crowd do this season?
-
Ugh, another PB horror story. Yet I saw a guy in my camp drop a nice 5 pointer with a 45 cal PB. I guess I just gotta use what I am set up for this season. The 250 gr TC Shockwave with 2 White Hots should anchor a deer for me. God willing a I get a shot.

Yeah I hear it. I like the concept of the Powerbelt admittedly. I think next year I might try the Harvester Sabertooth. Supposedly, its the real deal with using the gas check design. This is a load on my backup gun, My main gun is a Prohunter FX that I use a 250 grain Shockwave in.
-
How close do you think a Powerbelt 245 gr will print compared to a 250 TC Shockwave using the same powder charge?
-
Gotta love the logic of poachers. Last year we caught a local riding through one of our posted stands. Turns out the guy is a local processor. When he saw us he took off. He ditched his quad near a blowdown and hauled a$$ down the road home in his truck. Guy had more stories than a convict on death row. It We met him at his house and basically told him if we catch him again in there it will get worse, a lot worse. We reminded him a bunch of times that we're all cops in that camp and we're not going to give him a second chance. Here's the kicker, we come to learn that he and his son were caught doing the same thing in another camp this year. They had a six on the ground with a crossbow. Zero tolerance from here on out.

I know I have some really strong opinions on the Powebelts Aeros. I lost a deer due to no exit wound with a 50 cal 223 gr Aero over two 777 50 gr pellets last season. I was an okay hit, and I have blamed the bullet thinking it fell apart because they are lightly constructed. I called Powerbelt Bullets last week. They feel that their 223 gr Aerotip is every bit as tough as the famed 180 gr patched round ball that we used in the NY for decades until modern bullets became legal. It got me thinking about deer I saw drop in their tracks from those 180 gr round balls. I know the 223 gr is very accurate in my TC Triumph with 100 grs of 777 (two pellets). So here are my thoughts, stick with the 223 which that rifle is zero for and neck shoot using two pellets. Lets say that's option 1. Option 2 would be use the 223 with 3 pellets, but I don't know how that will fly since it will be about 300 FPS faster. Option 3 (Which I think I like) is is use a 245 gr Powerbelt Aerotip with 3 pellets. The Velocity should be equal or very close two what the 223 is doing with two pellets. I think it would print close to what the 223 gr is doing with 2 pellets (option 1 load which is zero in my TC rifle). I think the 245 gr bullet will do more damage just because its 10% heavier than the 223 gr and it might stay together better going through a deer. Options 2 and 3 I have not tried before but would be willing to hunt with. In thinking about a deers' vitals I'd have to hit a an area the size of a pie plate at 100 yds. The 223 gr with two pellets can do it no problem, so how much can option 3 vary from that? Incidentally, I met a guy who Muzzle Loads Southern Ohio and takes some real giants. He necks shoots using a 223 gr Aerotip with two pellets shooting the same rifle as me. Okay, thoughts and wisdom is appreciated.

They look to be pretty umch the same, and one have a strong opinion to offer either way on the White Hots?

I'm a TC guy. The ProHunter FX is pretty hard to beat.

Tues thru Sun with the front stuffer here.

They make nice stuff. Just spent Fantasy Football earnings on a clearance A-Bolt Stalker in 270 Win. After rebates and Black Friday deals its net $375 to me. I'm gonna do a Boyds Pepper Laminate on that.i got a Burris Droptine 3-9 for it. It will my Christmas present to me. I have all winter to bed it, do the trigger and set it up. I will likely use it to hunt next season. Bottom line to basically make a homegrown custom project like these work out to be for under $700 is a home run. You'll love their stock on your Savage.
