  1. 6.5 is the age estimate on the size he was. Back teeth will tell the real story. Dog worked the trail for two hours today. Came out on the far side of the woods. Gut pile on the trail edge. Met the guy who finished him off last night. He showed me pics. He said he came out limping on three legs and coughing up blood. Could not put his right front leg down. He said only about half of the broad head made it through the shoulder and into the lung. He said it looked more like a puncture wound. He also said the Rage head was completely mangled. Blades were stuck in the bone.
  2. I connected with a truck of a ten yesterday. Has to be 130" plus, 6.5 yr old. 10 yard shot. Arrow deflected a little and I hit him high in the shoulder top. I'm shooting 65 pounds with a 30" 340 Easton Nemesis and a 100 gr two blade Rage. My total arrow weight is over 400 grs. When it hit his top shoulder it sounded like a snapping snapped and he mule kicked high. He took off with the arrow sticking out of his shoulder. He was able to snap the arrow off in brush he crashed through. I had eyes on him disappearing into a field on the other side of the road from the stand. I let him sit about an hour. The broken shaft looks like I have 5" of arrow and broadhead inside of him. Wet brush so no blood to be seen and I hit him high with no exit wound. About two hours later I went into his wood line behind the filed that he disappeared in. This is the area where I had seen him rubbing trees earlier this year. I slowly pushed in 150 yards into that marshy wood line. He was about 50 yards in front of me when I saw him stand up. I had no shot, it was too thick. He didn't run, he slowly walked back into thicker stuff. I'm thinking the shoulder is broken and with that much arrow in him he has to be bleeding internally. The shaft (whats left of it) has about another inch to an inch and a half of darker red blood on it. So I'm thinking dark arterial blood off the main artery that runs between his spine and the top of his rips. I have a deer search dog coming this morning. With good hoof prints on the dirt where he took off from and that piece of recovered arrow I'm hoping to get lucky. It was a sleepless night. He will be the biggest deer I would have ever shot in my life if we recover him. I'll let you know how we do.
  3. if this thing can't flip the of switch on a deer this season it is 100% pilot error!!!!!!
  4. Before the season I soot a bit more than I otherwise would. I would say the first step in rife accuracy for deer hunting is comfort. What comes to the shoulder comfortably, fits decently well and has a trigger that is smooth and crisp. Then its a good scope picture with a lot of lot transmission. A little not what was asked I know.... but the central issue is shooting to be accurate. Comfort of what you are shooting is the biggest part of that for me. Once all is zeroed in, maybe a box of so. Keep in mind if its a new rifle, you are going to want to / need to break it in. So more shooting at a slower rate with methodical cleaning at first. This can take 40 rounds of very slow fire to break in. You can do double duty and zero your scope while doing so.
  5. I used an old fashion meat thermometer to check temps.... good enough?
  6. Would a venison roast smoke similar to a beef rump or even a brisket?
  7. Guys this is super helpful. We did ribs tonight. Three racks. Dry rubbed with Lowry Pork. 3 hours on the smoke at 225. I used hickory and apple blend. When it was in the last 30 minutes I basted them with BBQ sauce (Sweet baby Rays) and kept it on the smoke. They fell off the bone and if I don't say so myself, they we're delicious. Now I have to clean it up..... Ugh. And yes it is electric.
  8. I was pretty anti xbow until I gave it a try. I gotta tell you, I do like them a lot. I have a Wicked Ridge Invader. I like it a lot.
  9. Just bought a new Masterbuilt Sportsman 30". Anyone have any tips? I seasoned it tonight per the directions. Looking for tips and tricks.
  10. This old model 70 is not to be believed.
  11. I was reading about a warden who dealt with a wounded mountain lion in Washington State. They were issued 357's. He said he finished the 160 pound tom with with three shots of FMJ ammo. Wonder if the hardhats would be any better/more effective.
  12. I had a mile long foot track on a 400 pound wounded bear two years ago. I was in spots that I could not even consider lifting a rifle to my shoulder. Very thick. My primary choice will always be a rifle. This is a backup sort of thing.
  13. Ever since we started seeing the size and numbers of bears on our club land I decided it wasn't a bad idea to take my old service GP100 along when I'm in the woods. Its a 4" barrel and I'm very good with it. I was looking around for a suitable bear discourager that wasn't painfully expensive. I settled on a 158 gr. jsp made by Magtech. The muzzle energy is 535 ft pounds. I'm thinking six of those would do me just fine. I opted not to go hollow point because I thought penetration would be better with the jacketed soft points. Any thoughts or opinions on this?
  14. letting the area settle in. All private homes up there. Almost zero hunting pressure.
  15. Have him on camera 8 times. He's a shooter. Peek-a-boo buck.
  16. It was a bad winter for a frost kill last year. They are hell this year. One of the guys at my job got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and both my nephew and niece have Lyme all this year.
  17. Morning Y'all- just thinning the herd a little bit: Up for sale Browning Gold Hunter 12 ga. 3.5" chamber, 28". Camo is Nxt Evo. Has mag cut off switch, and fast feed system. Limbsaver pad, Invector Plus chokes, Turglo high vis bead. I also have the factory pad as well. Gun is in excellent shape so not inclined to take a hair cut on the price. $700 would be fair for all. Was a back up gun for me but I have others and tend not to shoot too much 3.5" these days. Will ship to your FFL. PM me if interested or want more info. $700 plus shipping. If your FFL requires me to to ship FFL to FFL, that will be little extra.
  18. Put a descent red dot on your 30/30 and you'll be fine. Your 243 ill work as well keep the scope on 3x.
  19. It is a constant frustration that they do they,.... but they sell illegal stuff in the same department like deer bait.
  20. not poisonous no juju pits in its face. Its a constrictor of some sort. Prob a rat snake.
