  1. http://www.chuckhawks.com/shotgun_slugs.htm Read this. He makes a lot of sense to me on this one. It's all about ethical shooting and safe shooting. Statically there are still higher incidences of hunter fatalities in shotgun states then rifle. I get it if your using a longer barrel and a rib that you'd wanna switch to game loads, but then again how accurate can someone be using a rib on a barrel to hit a deer at 70 yds??? 2. just curious, why would anyone be using a smoothbore at this point? Not being a jerk, but even if your in one of the few remaining shotgun DMU's, wouldn't you want to get a rifled barrel on your gun and shoot sabots? You be going from a 3" 50 yd grouper to a 2" 100 yd gun. Hell, If I was in one of those counties I'd think I'd be using my front stuffer instead.
  3. got me an old one with a gold trigger 1972 John Marlin 336C in 35. Inherited it from pop! She's a deer hammer. I did put a simple Bushnell red dot sight on it. Fast handling rifle and the red dot is nice in thick cover when cross hairs get lost in the understory, a red dot is still visible.
  4. Welcome aboard, you need thick skin a bottle of gin for this ride. Buy hell we're New Yorkers!
  5. Absolutely. And I do all of my own stuff too. Metal work. Actions. Light wood stuff. But a wheel running at 1000 rpm next to my stock while it's in my hands ain't something I'm comfortable with. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Not much more to shoot than a 243, figure the rifle scoped will weigh about 8 or 8.5 lbs, add to that mil recoil of the 25-06, it won't be really anything more than the 243. I've owned them both and they both come back the same way.
  7. I'd do the X-Bolt over the Compass, but I believe Browning only does standard length mag in 26" barrels. I think the Compass already has its first recall. That's been the plight of ever TC bolt gun since the Icon.
  8. Its a busy reticle with the title bibbles in it, not horrible, I have them on two TC muzzle loaders, a 12 ga slug gun, and a couple of bolt guns (those are Monarchs). Optically they are a great scope, just the reticle isn't my favorite.
  9. all kidding aside its a CDW state, correct? So anything that comes back to NY has to be butchered before it gets over the boarder. Correct?
  10. yeah, he's a nice enough guy but has the horse sense of a box of marbles. Good in his trade, and his trade isn't curing cancer if you know what I mean. I agree best way to screw you up is to let those guys work on your stuff. Good for lining a reel is all.
  11. Buddy calls about a two hours ago: Buddy: "Eagle (not my name but since its my online handle, I'll go with it), you home,... where you at cuz?" Me: "Home drinking beers and watching football, whatcha needing?" Buddy: "Just came from the range with a new used rifle, couldn't hit the water from a boat at 100 yds with it." (now I know this guy, and he isn't exactly Sgt. York, opps I just dated myself. But he can shoot a 100 yd deer group well enough). Me: "Yeah bring it over here." Okay so he shows up 20 minutes later looking all upset with a rifle case in his hand at the front door. Get down to the basement and put the rifle on the bench, its a used BAR Safari in 308 Win. with a new Vortex, Weaver bases and rings on it Nice enough rifle, just personally think BAR's are best suited for standard length cartridges (you'll all yell at me later for that I'm sure). Me: "rifle cycles like it should? Buddy (real name Dale): "yeah, runs like a sewing machine, just wasted $40 in ammo to shoot 3" groups." Me: "Okay, lets see what the deal is." Rifle is on the bench action opened light inside chamber, nice sharp rifling, a little fouled up but he just came from the range, I douche the bore for him with some #9. Next stop frond off to check the regulator setting, piston and buffer, because in my experience any one of those can make for a sloppy BAR performer. All seemed good, but we gave it a good cleanup as well. I even gave him a new nylon buffer, the action spring seemed fine and I didn't have an extra to part with anyways. Me: "I duuno Dale she seems like it should be well enough to give you an 1.5" group, what kind of ammo were you shooting today?" With that I put my hand on the top of the rifle in vise on the scope and I can swear it didn't feel solid. Me again: "Dale, did the scope come with the glass or did you buy it?" Buddy: "I went to Dicks for the glass, the kid there installed it for me." I take the scope off and what do you know, the base has a little play in it. Back out one of the screws, and.... NO LOCTITE on the base screws. Zero, nada! Goop up the screws with blue loctite, put his gun back together, and tell him to go back to the range tomorrow, the rifle will group now.
  12. don't go empty handed,.... bring a nice tray of cookies or a pie when you knock on the door. Simple gesture like that goes a long way. I would always look presentable too when I knocked on a door for that reason, like I just came from church (that is when people actually used to get dressed up for church),...LOL
  13. Okay, so you all might have figured out that I am a bit particular with my guns. Okay, I'm anal! That said I am not afraid to hunt with them, but I try to take care and not beat on them when I'm afield either. I got a couple of old BAR Mk I. One was my grandfathers (1968 Grade I 30-06), and the other I got out of a local shop. Its a 30-06 Grade II made in 1970. Great shape but both are shooters to me, as such I put pads on them. Local guy who died put a vented Pachmayer pad with a white line spacer on my Grade I. No issues always great work, except he went and died now. Now I'm looking for a local guy to do the same pad on the Grade II gun. So a guy tells me about "this guy" who is a smith and works out of his house, but does excellent work..... You know about this guy, well I do now as well.... Seems everyone says he does excellent work except nobody has actually seen his work. So I get a number and I reach out. He seems nice enough, very confident, and says he's done "hundreds" of pads over the years. I take a shot, seems okay after all its a pad, not like its metal work. Right......? WRONG!!!! I meet up with him, give him the rifle and the pad, tell him on my way down south for a week and I'll see when I get back. We settle on a price that was pretty reasonable, plus I bought the pad. Now key facts, First, I told it was going to be a Pachmayer Vented Field Pad with white line spacer, same as my Grade I. Second, I told him to square off the stock when he takes the butt plate off of it cause it will make for an easier cut so the hard plastic spacer can be installed (since it has to be 90 degrees to the stock). Alright so everyone was signing off the same sheet of music from the get go. Two weeks later we meet up, I wanted to cry. He cut the stock to match the LOP, okay but kept the original butt plates curved countour because he liked the look of it,.... WTF!!! So while the length of pull seemed okay the pad was sitting off the gun about 1/4" at the midpoint of the butt because the hard plastic spacer doesn't bend!!!! And , he didn't grind the pad down to the end of wood. It was wider then the wood at the edge of the butt by about 1/2 overall. The stock (which I assume he cut with a scroll ) wasn't smooth either. There were waves in the cut. It was a freaken mess. I told him I wasn't happy to take it back and fix it, I sent him pics of my other one by text and said I'm very particular it has to look like this one when you are done." He said now that "I know what you want exactly, I will get this done for you, not to worry." I even said, "I can't ruin this rifle so if you are not able to do exactly what I want, just tell me, it's okay. I will send the gun out and get it done." Again he reassured me he can do it. A week goes buy and I get a square but with an uneven cut and a pad that's 1/4" wider than the butt. I loose my mind, he says "give me the gun again and I'll make it right." NFW! Not happening guy. Well a few years back I had a 1980's 7400 pad done by LimbSaver out in Shelton WA. They charge $100, it includes shipping, installation and the pad. I didn't think I'd like the looks of the Sims Pad on the BAR, but I said screw it, there is literally nobody else I can trust. I sent them the stock, wrote them a note about what I was hoping for and dropped it in priority mail with a $100 check. Literally a week and a half later I get a box at the front door, open it it and its better than I hoped it would be. Quality work and would you know it the pad looks great on the rifle. Lines are perfect. It looks like a factory fit. A couple of days later I'm shooting clays with some guys from my job and I tell them the story. One of them goes, yeah that first guy hacked up an old A5 of his his on a pad job years ago. So there you have it folks,... hackers gonna hack. I feel better sharing.
  14. I refuse to hunt in that pinko state,.... can't use my BAR's for deer!
  15. Thanks. I think I'll hang on it after all. Nobody seems to be interested... like the caliber is a bit stand off'ish. I have another 270 WSM so I'm already into the caliber. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. 1/2 as much as my daughter spends on clothes.
  17. Any interest in this? This is an A-Bolt II Hunter, not a plastic A-Bolt III. It has the original box, papers, comes with Tally scope mounts and an extra magazine (in fact if I have a second spare mag, I will include that as well). The scope does not come with it. Caliber is 270 WSM, its great caliber, very fast and lots of energy. It's a beautiful and great bolt action hunting rifle without a doubt. I'm just looking to make room for a different rifle (TC Prohunter), and I like this Browning but I don't love it. It was new to me, and I only have one box of Federal Fusion through it, so the round count is very low. Hence, the action is tight, trigger is crisp, and the bore is super clean and bright. I'd happily do $600 plus whatever shipping to your favorite FFL. I'm into it for considerably more than that. So please don't hammer me with unfair offers. Private message me if interested.

  19. Yes but it will allow movement in the barrel if the lockup is loose. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Anyone know what to expect from TC Prohunter rifles looking at one in either 270 Win or 30-06. But if the accuracy is anything north of 1.5" at 100 yds It's not gonna be good for me. I had one a while back and I didn't;t get great results, but I've heard that something have improved since S&W took TCA over. Any info is appreciated.

  23. Ballistics look nice, but White Hots shoot perfect in my guns.
  24. Tikka is owned by Sako, which is now part of Beretta. I have a Vanny S1 SubMOA (equivalent of the current RC mode) , I don't like two stage triggers in porters, soI wouldn't own an S2. Also the follower in the S2 is plastic. Which also bothers me. The Vanny's barreled actions come from Howa, except the fluted barrels. The word was that those were made by Krieger. Mine shoots amazing. I have hunted a lot with it. Tough, well made, accurate and very reliable rifle. If I came across another S1 SubMOA or S1 Back Country, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. I don't know much about the Tikka, but I've never heard a bad word about them. I'd not buy one cause I don't like plastic detachable mags in hunting riffles. I've never been enamored with 308 Win, but there is nothing wrong with it. The 25-06 will flatten deer no problem and give you a great out west flat shooter as well. It was really made famous by pronghorn shooters just for that reason. It would be my choice as it's a true long action round. Tell you what you find an S1 Vanny in 25-06 that has a nice bore and tight lock up on the action, buy it. You'll be very glad you did.
