  1. Agreed. The challenge is in breeding a dog that isn’t aggressive with people or with other dogs but has the tenacity to dispatch predators with minimal training. Also, one that points, retrieves, swims, tracks, etc, all largely on instinct. I think the JGHV has captured this well.
  2. No way... you probably wouldn't get 50% refusal even out of antivaxxers
  3. Haha, I take it the dog wasn't neutered... Yeah, bite work is a different world. These German hunting dogs were originally bred to have some sharpness to them. They've gone 180 on that and any dog that shows aggression towards a human is disqualified from breeding. I actually saw this happen to a really good bitch that growled and snapped at a judge during a dental evaluation.
  4. There is just so much here that is categorically false. I mean, it sounds compelling and I can see why you would parrot it from w/e talking head you picked it up from, but none of it is actually real.
  5. No one is currently advocating for compulsory vaccination. But it is critical that one exercises news literacy while doing their own research, as you say. Unless you're going to read the primary literature, your secondary research source will be the news. Not all news sources are created equal.. choose carefully.
  6. BBC is great. I really like CBS - true professionals.
  7. Yes, there’s actual news and rigorous journalism and then there’s everything else...
  8. Exactly. And the American chapters are plentiful so it’s actually quite easy to find a pup from one of these breedings. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of the equation. I had a working line German shepherd (Czech/DDR lines) a long time ago and I dabbled in schutzhund but I never actually tested. I have my German versatile certified to breed.
  9. It’s actually not that complicated. This may help clarify things: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-19-vaccine-infectious/
  10. Beautiful. In what county did you harvest him?
  11. We need a Pittman-Robertson like excise tax on gear used by hikers and birdwatchers or a general permit requirement for accessing state public lands. Hunters are effectively funding the management and care of land and wildlife enjoyed by many. It’s time other recreational outdoors people contributed to the pot
  12. Yeah, known to unravel in even minor headwind. So brave of you to reject and not fear a Twitter hate storm. More spine than our elected officials
  13. Do you know if Tactacam (or other cell cams) have theft deterrence measures that prevent unauthorized users from setting up a phone plan? I can imagine that even with a new SIM card the phone company would be able to read the camera’s serial number and prevent use if reported stolen, etc.
  14. That’s for shepherds and I assume there’s a registered American club (wouldn’t be with AKC of course). The Germans have a similar testing system for hunting dogs called the JGHV https://www.jgv-usa.org/events/test-descriptions/ and the breed clubs impose additional criteria for breeding certification. These are the North American club pages for the most popular German breeds: https://www.vdd-gna.org https://dkgna.org https://www.dl-gna.org
  15. The German breeding system keeps detailed information on all dogs certified to breed (and on those that fail too). If you get a dog bred through this system, you can be sure that every antecedent passed a series of temperament and health evaluation.
  16. I spoke to a Suffolk County office today and it's odd how vague the guidelines are. Generally, it's understood that only county residents can hunt there. To prove they are residents, they purchase a green key pass. Non-residents can also purchase this pass but it's more expensive. Thus, non Suffolk county residents can in fact hunt in Suffolk county parks. The still unresolved point is small game hunting. You cannot partake in the Long Island shotgun deer season in Suffolk county parks. Thus, folks take this to mean that shotgun hunting is not allowed and so they default to the assumption that small game hunting is prohibited. The county official I spoke to on the phone acknowledged that it was unclear and that perhaps the best thing would be to default to DEC regulations. They suggested contacting a different Suffolk County office to be certain...
  17. Looks like non-residents can also purchase a green key card. But Bruno1’s point was that small game hunting is not allowed...
  18. I thought that the check-in was only applicable to DEC land that has a pheasant release program. In addition to DEC, Suffolk county has a series of parks that are listed on OnX as simply “County of Suffolk.” Online Suffolk details a similar check in program for deer hunting (both archery and shotgun) but they don’t say anything about small game hunting. I’ve heard that it’s only open to county residents but I haven’t been able to verify that.
  19. Any issues with the sensor targeting from that far up?
  20. Assuming the border reopens, I’ll be going to Quebec for moose next fall. I had this trip booked for 2020 but, well, Covid.
  21. You really like to recycle your claims and rebuffs... Your post falls far from the realm of fact. These far fetched claims do suggest that you’ve lost touch with reality and perhaps are in need of some professional help. If you do want to be taken seriously and would like to engage in actual debate, put forth well reasoned arguments that merit consideration.
  22. That’s their vomeronasal organ and it’s specialized to pick up non-volatile odorants. This means that the deer’s nose would have to come in direct contact with with the scent source. And though the Jacobson’s organ may not actually contribute to the deer’s ability to pick out your wind scent, they obviously do have a profound sense of smell.
