Another good reason to avoid this political section is the depressed feelings that come from being reminded that we (the voting public) voted in all these idiots and crooks (precinct by precinct) that are destroying the fabric of this country. We are doing it to ourselves. Can anybody discuss the situation that we are in and not walk away depressed and realizing that the reason for our eventual demise will be the erosion of the basic decency and character of the people within it. Now, there is the obvious reality that each successive generation has deteriorated to the point where one has to look inwardly and see that the system has finally broken because of the "something for nothing" citizenry that comprises it. We can blame the political parties, but in the end we must understand that the government and the parties that run it are simply a reflection of ourselves.

I have to wonder how any eagles even exist at all today. How many centuries have we been using lead ammo, and all of a sudden, eagles are endangered my lead ammo? Also, it seems that the eagle population is thriving these days in spite of the continued use of lead ammo.

Somewhere I heard or read that deer and other animals can sense barometric pressure changes such that they know when foul weather is approaching which then turns on a bit of a feeding frenzy. Accurate theory or just B.S., I cannot say for sure, but there does seem to be some connection between approaching and current crappy weather and wildlife activity.

I have 13 years with this site, and quite a bit of time on other hunting sites. One thing I have learned is to carefully choose the time and place for discussing politics. It's kind of the same rule that many families have for conversation around the Thanksgiving dinner table......lol. Those kinds of topics tend to make reasonable people lose their minds. I have seen and even participated in such conversations over my time here and have watched EVERY such topic go sideways in a hurry. There are places to discuss such things, but from what I have seen, this site is not one of those places.

The most criticism of this site has historically been about the political section and the outright combat that politics has caused here. I have personally decided to stay away from political comments here because I do not want to feed the bitter controversy that seems to erupt whenever someone brings up political issues. People get real sensitive when you discuss politics. I have a feeling that most members are kind of shying away from starting these kinds of discussions (arguments) here for the same reasons. It seems that this site is under attack, and I do not want to add to the difficulties and descension. So unless the discussions involve the politics of weapons, hunting, trapping, fishing, or outdoor activities, I am going to cool it here for awhile.

Any explanations as to why crossbows are not allowed on this hunt?

I think a lot of deer are capable of jumping a lot higher than they dare to. I know that deer can jump higher than my 4' highest strand of electric fence, but they don't even try. It may be that they touched there nose to the wire at one time or another and learned a lesson without even trying to jump over it.

I can think of at least 4 instances where I have seen deer carcasses hanging from a standard American wire farm fencing. So deer may be capable of jumping amazing heights, but do they always make it? The hanging dead deer that I have seen likely were weakened by winter starvation. Three of them were at the huge deer yard over at the southern end of Honeoye lake where I know their strength was being destroyed by starvation. And the fourth was hanging from one of our boundary fences on the old farm. How high is standard American wire fencing? ......4' perhaps? Did these deer misjudge the top of the fence? Were they compromised by starvation? I really don't know, but I do remember the gruesome sights of these dead and rotting critters hanging by their back legs. They figured they could make it, but they figured wrong. One thing that helps with gardens is electric fence. A deer only has to get zapped once, and it seems that every deer in the area knows about it. Our garden has been protected by electric fence that is a little higher than 4' off the ground, and no deer has tried to jump it in decades.

There is a problem with summertime practice. There are so many things that need doing. Heck, I haven't even had a chance to do much fishing. The summer chores swallow up so much time. However, I usually start some fairly intense practice in August. Usually the lawn starts slowing up with the growing and things begin to get more under control.

Got my lifetime license yesterday.

Is there unposted access there? If so maybe I'll try it some time. I'm always looking for good off-shore fishing access. The last time I fished the Canandaigua Outlet was about 50 years ago, and I can't even remember were I fished it. It was somewhere around Manchester.

I wonder how long it will be before New York State requires a special permit for mouse hunting.

Yes, they are manufacturers and sales people for these contraptions, with just about every question about them answered somewhere on their website. I suspect that they would be legal in NYS as a crossbow, even though they look funny. But here is the question: I'll bet that just about everyone has gotten a "string-burn" on the inside of their bow arm from their bow at one time or another. What do you suppose that "string-burn" would be like on a bow that has 150 pounds or more of string tension? OUCH!!!!! Damn.........Make sure that elbow is turned out. I really don't like the idea of a crossbow string ripping by that close to my arm, but they do have an impressive list of advantages over a horizontal crossbow.

I don't think so. I think the theory was that they would cut a large cylinder of meat and cause horrific destruction to any veins, arteries and whatever. But instead they simply plugged up with hide, hair, and fat and then simply became a blunt with inadequate penetration. It was a failed technology, but they did get around a bit simply because it was marketed by Browning.

I'm not big on hunting contests. I have never entered one. However, I see an attack against such contests as an attack against hunters. We have enough problems keeping our numbers from diminishing, and we do not need legislators going out of their way to discourage various kinds of hunting activity.....Especially by people who are obviously anti hunting and have no real interest or understanding of nature and wildlife. I stand squarely against this attack against hunting. As Airedale said, "death by a thousand small cuts', they keep picking and picking away little by little!" That is the strategy of the left, and has been for decades. That strategy works. That is why we have to band together and draw a line in the sand and become hard core on even the smallest of intrusion on our hunting rights.

So, other than size, what are the distinguishing features that differentiate a wolf from a coyote? I can see where a costly mistake could be made, especially from a distance.

I wonder how they figure out who gets the licenses first? I haven't gotten mine yet, but there have been years when I received it a lot earlier than I expected.

Much like mosquitos and ticks, we have no choice but to accept their presence. There really is no natural population control for the critters other than hunters, trappers, and disease. But in all honesty, I have not seen where the deer population has suffered at all from growing coyote populations. In fact with deer hunter numbers and activity on the decline, perhaps another source of deer population control may be looked on quite favorably in the future. I guess my attitude is that they are just another furbearer to hunt and trap.

The quote that I was basing my comment on from this article was, " It's no wonder hunters blame Canis latrans for slaughtering little deer each spring and summer. Most all scientific studies over the past 30 years have documented predation, largely by coyotes, as the leading cause of whitetail fawn mortality." And then this article adds: "But wait a sec … Predation may have less of an impact than we think, writes Justin Dion in this article posted to the National Deer Association's WEBSITE." To me that is a contradiction of "most all scientific studies over the past 30 years"

I have caught and landed one carp that size, but not with a cane pole. I was casting for bass, and hooked him in the tail. Those carp can really fight. I thought she was going to get pulled in the water a couple of times. I loved this video!
