  1. We usually get some good stuff in at a variety of price ranges. Savage is a big supporter of the program, and we usually have several of their guns.
  2. I’m not one to post a review of an item unless it is above and beyond of what I expected. A few weeks ago I got a Work Shop pocket knife sharpener, and this thing is no joke. I sharpened all of my carry knives, and I don’t know if they have ever been this sharp. I even hand ground the tip on an old Buck 110 that I broke the tip off of several years ago. In fact, I used that knife to field dress the doe I got yesterday. The thing I like most about it is the angle guide, it made sharpening super simple. It’s also under $15. https://www.worksharptools.com/shop/sharpeners/manual/pocket-knife-sharpener/
  3. I was in late last week, and they were in the process of sorting lots, and should be set up soon. I would expect an update in the next few days.
  4. As many of you know, I work for Saratoga County 4-H, and am heavily involved in the 4-H Youth Shooting Sports program, the NYS program being based out of Saratoga County. In “normal” years we host a spring banquet and auction to support the state program, but due to COVID, our 2020 banquet was cancelled. However, Talk of the Town Auctions in Ballston Spa has offered to host an auction for us on October 15th. This sale will feature many firearms (new and used), knives, outdoor equipment, outdoor artwork, and even a full and face cord of wood split by yours truly along with some of our invaluable volunteers. There is a variety of things really, and most of the items are geared to sportsmen and women. Best of all, this is a charity auction, and donations are tax deductible! Even though seating is limited, items will be available for viewing on the 14th and 15th, and you can leave bids in person or over the phone. Right now the auction house has a simple description of the sale on their website, but I did get my detailed sale flyer in the mail today. Once the website is updated with item descriptions and photos, I’ll share that. In the meantime, here’s the link to their website. https://www.auctionzip.com/NY-Auctioneers/12607.html Thanks everyone!
  5. I used my either sex tag, which in retrospect wasn’t best. Oh well, I’ll know better next time. I’ve got plenty for now, and I can see what gun/muzzleloader seasons bring. Very good to know that if I need more meat in the freezer I can transition an empty gun tag to either sex for ML season.
  6. Okay, that's how I was making sense of it. I don't think I'll mess with a DMP since I don't really need the extra meat, but thanks for the helpful response.
  7. Please tell me if I'm wrong, but from what I'm reading, when I ordered my license, I was provided with a Regular Season tag for Antlered Deer Only (little antlered silhouette in the corner). Is this right? If so, how does one go about getting antlerless or either sex tags for gun season. Forgive the dumb question, but I'm learning my way around the New York permits and laws. It's not a huge deal, a doe with a bow and hopefully muzzleloader will set me up pretty good. However, this seems like a weird way to manage a deer population. In Illinois, you could buy doe tags all day long, but were limited to 2 bucks total for the whole year, and permits were issued as either sex tags when applied for.
  8. I always plan on filling the freezer first, but I'm not one for buck hunting. Don't get me wrong, I'll take a nice one if it shows up, but I'm primarily a meat hunter. Now that I've got my doe done, I can just spend some time in the woods and see what shows up, or if I find someone else who needs a deer I can take one for them. Essentially, the pressure is off.
  9. No, one of my co-workers just outside of town. It's a nice place, though I haven't had any time to scout it. Our 4-H woods was logged over the winter, and it is thick in there right now, I'm not even sure a deer could move through there. Will be nice next year, but this year's not the best hunting there.
  10. If you ever need help tracking/dragging, just let me know
  11. Doing your own is really easy. That being said, this is the first year I’ll be taking mine to a processor. I just don’t have the facilities to do it right now. Honestly, I’m much more stressed about taking it to someone than I ever was doing it myself.
  12. It’s nice when they fall a few yards from the stand. First ever deer hunt in NY, found a good tree after a 5 minute walk in. Farmer manured the field around 5:00, and 3 does came in. After about 20 minutes of making their way through the hay field, got a good 25 yard shot, and this big girl piled up about 20 yards from my tree. Ive got enough meat to last a while now, so I can enjoy the rest of October with my wife and daughter, and hit it again with the new muzzleloader for gun season.
  13. Just had a huge deer...well... Deere in the field in front of me. I asked my farmer friend if I should avoid anywhere today, and he said no, whole place is open. At least I don’t have to worry about getting winded now Whew, definitely changed the olfactory game for the day.
  14. Haven’t been hunting since fall of 2013, and my first time since moving to New York. Felt really natural putting the climber on a tree.
  15. No, I haven’t gotten a deer...yet, but does anyone have any suggestions of places that do deer processing in the Saratoga area?
  16. "BREAKING: President Trump "Tea-Bagged" on Air Force One after debate!" I didn't want to comment, but my goodness...
  17. I've heard both ways, that a full moon positively/negatively affects deer daytime activity. My uncle used to say that a full moon hurt day movement because they would be out later at night because they could see better. I don't know that it made any difference. He would also say "Look at the cows, if they are up and moving, the deer are too". Again, whether or not there's truth to this or not, I don't know, but if I drive by cows on my way to hunt, I always pay attention to whether they are up or not
  18. Super dangerous for 2 wheelers. It’s a beautiful time of year to ride, but leaves are crazy dangerous.
