  1. Heck this is an easy one for me. Something I will never ever forget again, well I hope I wont, Bend at the waist when way the hell up in a tree at that big bruiser or your going to miss the shot. I kicked myself all the way back to camp in the dark cause as soon as I punched that trigger I knew I didndt do the bend. My old bow I had and orange sticker on the riser above the sight to remind me off all the proper steps before releasing that arrow. Worked great for a stupid little reminder.
  2. Lets not and call this thread dead lol
  3. I have never been denied a landowner permit in 6k even in the years when they claim that chances for first permit are none. It has been said here a couple times but I do think alot of it is all about the person behind the counter. What does drive me nuts is these guys who have a low or none for second chance that just apply for a different area because maybe its close or maybe I will go over there and hunt and never go. It happens I know guys who have done it and theres not a dmp swap thread because guys got tags in areas they hunt. It takes away from the chances for the hunters that want that permit and get denied. There was a comment about the number of doe permits actually claimed as filled and I would take a bet that alot of those that arent are the ones who dont use them but hey they got that 2nd tag. The DEC has a tough job with the dmp system any way you look at it. Managing a doe herd in a WMU is darn near impossible, lets say there is 10000 acres of state land in a WMU 7m and in that 10000 acres the doe population is par or subpar to their goal but yet down the road 20 miles theres farms all over with an over abundance of doe and not to mention the overpopulated urban areas. The current system is a guessing game and thats it. What do they think all those does hanging out in grandma's back yard on mainstreet are just going to up and relocate to an area they can be hunted and controlled. The system in my opinion should be broken down into smaller areas but then we are going to hear about the micro managing of our herd and its all about the DEC trying to make more money of us hunters. I bet 99% of hunters spend more money on stupid shit for hunting than they do a license fee. Its a small fee in comparison to what they manage for us. How many of you buy lottery tickets and spend ten dollars weekly and dont even get a single plate of food for it. I dont mean to rant but man this drives me nuts. The complaints about Joe Blow shot 2 bucks and thats why we dont see monster running around, I for one am glad that every buck isnt a monster buck , it just makes it all the more special when and if we harvest one. The bottom line is the no matter what the DEC or anyone does its not going to please everyone ever.. Me Im thrilled to all hell that I can rifle hunt, shotgun hunt, muzzle loader hunt, bowhunt, crossbow hunt in this state. You look at some other states like Ohio and theres only a week of shotgun and a couple days of muzzlelaoder and a whole lot of bow. I prefer to bow hunt but dang diversity is awesome to have. The system may not be perfect but in my opinion the DEC has done a pretty darn good job with all it faces and the state of the economy we are in. Its like bitching about the company you work for that gives you a paycheck for your work to feed your family makes no sense to me at all.
  4. Muzzleloading in the adirondacks a couple years ago we all were at our vehicles and the DEC pulled up and checked everyone of our guns to make sure it was unloaded and no priner in them. For some unknown reason we all unloaded before we came out to eat lunch. Normally we would of just safely stored our ML and head back in after lunch. I asked him why the heck it was illegal we were just taking a break and he said your ML are leaning against the vehicle and if they werent I would never have checked them. I thought it was odd and he made the statement that in, on, leaning against or near the vehicle was illegal if loaded and that even just a primer in it was considered loaded. Never questioned it further.
  5. Thats funny right there lol.
  6. Thanks Vietvet. Your info is much appreciated. I have made contact with a fellow maple syrup producer that lives 10 minutes from where I will be staying that is also willing to show me around the area. He is a big bowhunter as well and says he has taken some really nice bucks off the state land in that area in Ohio.
  7. I say we rename it to the Texas Dumb Ass shot lol.
  8. Darn I wish I could remember what the tumor is. All I remember is we had one that was covered with the tumors and had asked a dec biologist what it was and if it was harmful, we sent him photos of it and the response was its it a growth and harmless was the jist of it.

Oh man that Salmon Run wine is nasty stuff. I had someone give me a case of it and we opened one at christmas dinner and all of us couldnt drink it. Gave the whole case away minus one opened bottle.

    Salmon Run?

The salmon river is in my back yard. There has been a great run of coho salmon this year. I Fish for salmon a lot and I would suggest a 10 wt. You will have worn out arms fighting a big salmon on the 8wt. There have been a lot of steelhead and few browns in the mix this fall already as well. Salmon fishing isn't as sporting as most fishing in a river but it still a bit of fun. Steelhead on the river in the winter is phenomenal.

    Thief

Thiefs are the scum of the earth. I have had trespasser shoot a deer at camp out of one of our foodplots when there was snow on the ground. Trail camera in the plot wasnt stolen but was shot to hell. He even had the balls to drag the deer out right in the front yard of the camp and shoot out the camera there as well. I have had windows shot out stands stolen cameras stolen people camping and having fires with our camp wood right in the foodplots with beer cans and garbage left all over. It all ended when we posted signs that the state troopers gave us that the area was being patrolled and indeed they would drive in and check on things. Also caught and arrested trespassers and vandals. It took a few years but once word got around to the locals that we are not taking any crap they leave the place alone. Scumbags is all they are complete jealous scumbags that will rot in jail someday while our tax dollars pay for their stay behind bars.
  12. Yes I agree Roger Raglin is a good show and teaches as he goes. I couldnt believe the one I was watching late last night. Ultimate Shot. It has to be the biggest oximoron to the name Ultimate shot I have ever seen. This dude went to hunt in africa, his bow was cranked up so high he just about shit his pants everytime he drew it back, He took shots over 80 yards with animals in very very thick heavy cover and you could barely make out the outline of the animal on the tv. He wings and arrow in there and you see it hit a large rotten limb and wood is flying everywhere, he then claims it was a clean miss. This jack ass then proceeds to move on and jumps what he thought was another animal and takes another shot through tall grass at this thing completely broadside and it was very easy to see he completley missed, then he runs up to the dead animal the bushmen with him find his arrow and point out there no blood on it but low and behold there lays the dead deer lol. Then the bushman points out that there is a broadhead sticking out its ass and they find the first shot entering right in the front shoulder and indeed it was the first arrow he shot. They never once looked for his first arrow and to find blood or any kind of follow up they just got dumb lucky they jumped it again by accident. The dude then continues on to say they desperately need camp meat as they been out of meat for a week but yet he passes on several animals claiming he cant bring himself to shoot a female. The next one he shoots at was at 50 yards and he clearly missed it again and said that the problem is the extreme heat is effecting the flexability of his bow limbs and that is the cause of all his misses, yeah its got nothing to do with shooting through thick brush 80 yards away right. Next one he shoots at you see the animal running away with and arow stuck in its lower left leg and they are all happy and shit celebrating to walk up and find the dead animal yards from where they shot it. The funny part about that was if you paid attention when he shot the camera had his arm in view with his watch on it and it had 935 on it and when he was holding up the animal again you could see his watch and it had 847 on it lol. Ultimate Idiot is more like it. That was the biggest joke of a hunting show I have ever seen.
  13. I use to buy all the scents try all the cover scents had to get scentlock gear etc. About 5 years ago I went older school. Quit all the bs and s tarted focusing on hunting instead of the latest and greatest. I can say I have enjoyed myself far more now have harvested more consitantly and saved a lot of money. I have resorted to 1 scent brand and clothes wash detergent and a bottle of scent elimination spray. Play the wind game only hunt stands if conditions are right and a lot of preseason scouting and target shooting. Life is good again.
  14. HUnting shows to me are like rubber neckers are to car crashes. I get a kick out of all the bs and have turned the shows into a learning lesson for the kids. We play a little game of would you take that shot or why the shot was a bad one or bad choice. It might be wierd but the most aggrevating things to me are the whispering in the stands when that big racked buck is 20 yards out and the shooter keeps looking at the camera man saying you got him on film yet. How the hell can these deer not hear all this comotion is beyond me. Then the big celebration in the stands and the high fives and fist pumping shit and bragging they just bagged a monster yet they truly dont know the shot placement yet and you see the deer in the background running like hell. I love the perfect shot celebration when after rewinding you see a gut shot. I wathced one the other night and this guy seemed like an average hunter and was funny. He claimed he was a meat hunter and always shot the first buck that crossd his path. Never bagged a monster and his show buddies bet him he couldnt hold out for a monster buck. Man this guy struggled let me tell you he had to wait 3 days before he got his monster lol. I am sure glad I have a DVR fast forwarding through commercials is the best invention for television ever.
  15. This ban has been in effect for quite a few years now. I cant confirm this but the local building inspector told me it was also illegal to transport rough sawn lumber more than 50 miles unless it has been Kiln dried. Heck the last time I took the kids to old forge about 6 years ago they had signs up with posted warnings about the illegal transfer of firewood over 50 miles. They took good advantage of that and made it so you could not bring in any wood you had to buy it from them only. EAB is nothing to passed aside. Neither is the ALB. It is devastating our forest and landscape.
  16. Not hard to figure out who the old perverts are on this forum lol. I have to ask you pervs how in the hell does it look like they are looking for a place to do the "nasty" when all you see is the back of 2 people one male one female wearing white shirts and same colored pants? Man when I was in my hayday atleast we carried a blanket out in the woods with us and not white clothing to ruin with grass stains. lol
  17. My buddy sold an identical looking one a few years ago. It was a great setup not only for transporting his horses. I used to harrass him saying only you would buy an 80,000 dollar horse trailer to use a couple times a year lol. Guess I was wrong on that one.
  18. Still have a yellow tag. I try to save one every year well atleast thats my story lol. Im all prepped and pumped up. Rain in the forcast sucks however. Rain and bowhunting are not best of friends. Whats on the trail cams in my early opener spots, Well I dont know I will when I get out of the first one and take the card out. I do know there have been alot of does and fawns on the foodplot cam and the one in the apples before they all rotted or got eaten showed all does and fawns. Good by me where theres does the buck will come. Great thing about Northern tier early opener, all I do is walk out my front door and decide what stand Im walking too today. Oh its great having a camp in southern tier as well. Good luck Bowhunters.
  19. I used to use them for the looks but found it quite hard to keep the fletchings on them without tearing off. Maybe glue has advanced enough since then though. That is a cool wrap anyway you look at if fasteddie.
  20. The very first thing you should do to get a succesful food plot is get a soil test done. 4.7 on the nearby sample is extremely low. Your best bet for lime is a pulverized ag lime also. It will have the best and longest effect. The white powder lawn lime is short lived. Even with a 1/4 acre plot at 4.7 your looking at alot of lime. I had one plot tested at almost 6 and the test came back with 3 tons of lime per acre to get me to the desired 7. It takes alot of lime and even though you might get plants to grow the nutrient value and palatability of it would be subpar. After the ph is balanced I would personally disk the plot under in the spring and wait till july and go back and herbacide any weeds that have come back to life. Disk again and do a fall planting early to mid august and dont forget the fertilizer. I like planting annuals the first couple years or atleast the first year to keep after the weeds as they are long lived and will remain dormant for the best opportunity for them to regrow. I also like having one plot always in annuals so I can play around with different seeds and see the results of how it grows and how the deer take to it. Most of all have fun its addictive.

    Deer Hides

Theres a place in Weedsport just off the thruway that buys them still. They cater to trappers, if you get off the thruway and head north off the weedsport exit, cross over the overpass and take the first right and its the first place on the right. Darn if I can remember the name but I take alot of my furs to him.
  22. I havent heard of gluing nocks in place in a looooong time. They should be pressed in and remain pretty snug. If they are coming loos or spinning easily they need to be replaced, a loose knock will effect accuracy and worse a dry fire. Heck even years ago when I shot aluminum xx75 you got a nock tool to align the nock with the vanes.
  23. That is interesting ERUSSELL and thanks for posting. The DEC once again contradicts itself. Heres what I was going on. Wouldnt a stand be considered personal property? I guess this is one of those grey lines once again. How do they expect us to keep up with all this? Great find by the way. WMAs have specific use regulations in addition to the general use regulations for state land. Hunting, trapping, and fishing are permitted, except as specifically restricted by posted notice. On wildlife management areas, it is unlawful to: Camp without written permission Travel off-road by use of motorcycles, motor scooters, mopeds, trail bikes, snowmobiles or any other motorized vehicle, except as specifically allowed by a permit or posted notice Remove, cut or willfully damage or destroy living vegetation of any kind Construct or place a permanent structure, blind, stand or platform (includes placement of nails or other hardware into trees) Leave any personal property at the time of leaving the area Enter upon property posted with No Trespassing signs, except with written permission from DEC
  24. Yes same here at home. Trapping them has been very good past few years, the problem is they have been full of tics from head to toe. One last year was absolutley sickly looking and must have had hundreds of tick on him. Didnt dare to touch him much so he took a dunk in the creek weighted down for a few days before I brought him to the fur shed. Hide was worth pennies so alot of it went in the fly tying desk.
