Nice bucks!!!

Standard for back country hunting. Carry at least 9 rounds. If you empty the clip on prey (5 rounds semi) you still have 3 for emegency location with one spare. This is minimum. Love the scout refrence and yes if in trouble how ever unlikely I do not ever want to get caught with a empty fire arm... My 30-06 rounds were easy to carry in the plastic federal ammo case and are split into 10 rounds. With the extra gloves, neck warmers etc in my pockets I usually mixed my 44 mag ammo into them, even though my 44 mag holds 9 rounds I only load 5 as they seam to fly out of the gun faster than needed... I like the stock holders but have yet to try them. I usually bring at least 15 rounds into any deep woods hunt but have never used more than 5... I bring 4 arrows for bow hunting, 1 on the string and 3 for emergency location...

Wow I wish I hunted a area I could say he gets a pass!!! Those western leases sound better and better every season... These pics drive me nuts, lol. Looking forward to seeing your #1 on the hit list!

I camped at the end of long lake with nothing but a 3 man 3 season tent for 2 guys, no camp fire. We put the tent in the lean-to, colman stove for cooking only. 1st night we had rain that turned to snow with about 6-8 inches of snow in the AM. Jack frost visited the inside of our tent. Boy that was fun, 1993/94? If you get bad weather you can not have a good enough tent!!! I can not stress how importiant staying dry in a down pour is, or being able to get a fire started in that same rain... When I go back solo I do not bring any stoves or heaters as the wieght is just to much. A wood fire will keep you warm and allow you to cook with a mess kit, just make sure you can do it in any conditions!!! Sleeping bag is VIP, I don't care what tent or cot or mat you use just make sure you bag is rated for the coldest weather you can have and remember to bring extra clothes to change into or to add to keep you warm on the hardest nights... Survival equipment, GPS, maps, whisle, Personal locator beacon if you feel the need. I bring extra boots, hat and neck warmer, thermals and a extra large 1 piece suit for those really cold days. Knife, saw, string, rope, flash lights(more than 2 of the same brand), extra bat, sun screen(snow reflects),gun/bow arrows/ammo, fire startes-multiple types. Water purifier with good filters, containers to hold the water. A good back pack and day pack... User polypropylene or fleece based clothes they dry fast, wicks away moisture and keep you dry and warm. Stow your food safely, while out hunting you never know what animal might come into your camp site and miles back you need that life line!!! In so far as it being cold, depends on mother nature... Danger is realative to how prepaired you are. If you over prepair the dangers are minimal in any situation. Go unprepaired and you might make the next installment of the DEC lost and found or the book # 2 on surviving the moutians.

Welcome aboard hope you enjoy the site!!!

Hope you like the site like I do!!! Good topics and great people... I guese I would get that when I apply for muzzloader as my lifetime has already arrived... Let me know...

Nice! I hope you find the big one when the season starts!!!
-
I am glad I am not the only one who has to get past a bunch of downed trees! Seems like the Dac's are prone to high winds and some area's that are more exposed get the full force of it... Microbursts are not the only thing that takes down trees!!!
-
My broad heads are so old I am not sure of the manufacturer... (would not be much help as I have never shot at a deer with the bow...) I have lighted nocks but do not use them very much. I saved 12 for hunting season/practice that I will use when the season gets close... I have the Helium and shoot 340 and 400 easton, carbon express and beeman. The 400's are a little light for the bow 65 lbs 28 draw. But they still fly true... Luminocks, work ok but I am looking for brighter nocks... Good luck with the new bow!!!

Grow that is the best part about living in the clouds!!! We are under a tornado watch on LI right now. WOW is it raining!!! Wish we could spread this weather out over a few days/week instead of one weekend...
-
47 days for me!!! I like the extra 4 days but I am willing to sacrafice that for a good buck!!! Ahhh to dream...

Nice bucks! Congrats to both of you! I would love to read both stories on nyantler-outdoors.com! Sometimes the stories are even better than the pics...

That went around the internet via e-mail a few years ago, I have purchased several wallets in hopes of being scammed at one of these places, just never seemed to work... Might be the drool coming out of my mouth as they approach...

Nice buck!

Taking a known bad buck with horrible genetics will not stop the gene but it will prevent that buck with a horrible rack from spreading his defective dominant gene. I never said it would improve the genetics but it will prevent HIM from spreading a known bad Gene... Would you want a 4 1/2 year old buck that never grows a left side antler to bread your does? Now you start to see many bucks with NO L/S antlers around and wonder if you should have shot him when he was a 2 year old breading does. The doe's still have the Gene yet if you kill that one buck he has NO CHANCE of breeding... This will not impove the gene pool but it will stop a inherited bad prevelant gene from coming back into the pool from that buck if he is removed... Again the gene is still in the area you will still get similar bucks but if you kill him then his gene that has the traits that we do not want will be stopped from him transmitting it. Funny some say the gene pool can not change, I guese that means bucks must stay in the area they are born and never leave. And no outside buck can come into a differant heard, are you kidding me? And in so far as a buck staying in a mile area 640 acres they must be those southern bucks because I have tracked many bucks more than a few miles. I understand it is hard to change the gene pool but to say it can not be changed is kind of short sighted IMO...

Very Nice!

If you are managing for trophy deer and he is not up to standard at the age required, shoot him. That will prevent HIM from spreading bad genes. Will it stop the defect he might have, no the defect is probably in many deer in the area but if you kill him he has no chance of spreading that bad defect. I understand you can not change the gene pool yet you can prevent known bad genetics from spreading by taking undesireable deer. Personaly I would give him a pass as he seems to have a large body and a small head indicating he is still young and has some developing he can do and I see nothing wrong with him geneticly... Many say we can not have a 150 + class deer in NY? DO not tell the Edwards family that... Dave Jr. took a 200 + class deer in 2010 that was a monster (largest typical for that year)and his dad took a 140 + class deer in 2011 that any NY hunter would be proud of, IMO. It can be done if you have a large enough area and participating hunters in the area... Easy, NO but not impossible depending on a bunch of things... It is a exteamly high standard for NY I agree. Even though I consider myself a mature deer hunter I do not think I could pass on the buck that Mr.Dave Edwards Sr took in 2011. Tell me do you really think you would pass this deer? This deer is not up to the 150 standard you set... http://www.nyantler-outdoors.com/2011-new-york-whitetails.html His picture is the 10th one from the bottom, or he is the only person wearing jeans with sun glasses and sneakers camo shirt and hat. I would have shot this deer anywhere in NY. 20$ fine for shooting a deer yea no problem here is 50$. I am sorry but any buck close to 140 that I see is a NY trophy in my book... 150 is unrealistic from what I have seen, again not impossible but I think with that standard you will be lossing hunters or getting discouraged. This is the same property where his son took a monster in 2010... http://www.nyantler-outdoors.com/edwards-buck.html Like many have stated you can not change the genetics yet you can prevent known bad genes from spreading by taking undesireable deer. With this help change the gene pool, probably not but it will stop a known bad gene from spreading more. Every deer in the area probably has the gene but not all will exhibit its bad traits... EX: If I have a bunch of beautiful 8 point deer roaming my property and one has a horrible growth every year, I can kill that deer in hopes of preventing him from spreading his defect. Will this gaurantee no other buck has a defect like the one I kill, NO the bad genes are still in the area but HE will not spread his gene that has the prevelant defect. OK I will end this all. I have a extra 20$ can I take him as my 1st bow kill? LOL Funny thing is I would let him go and probably not see anything for the rest of the hunt. IF another hunter tagged him 5 minutes after he passed me, I would go over to that hunter and give him a congrats no regrets. Don't make hunting a dull experience do what you want to make you happy. If killing any deer makes it for you go for it. If hunting a dominant buck is your thing then do not complain about NOT shooting deer every year... Unless your name is Benoit or something that rymes with that you have no chance at big deer every year... lol J/K 8 weeks and counting untile Northern zone bow Sept 27th. Now if I see that buck a few miles back in the ADK I might let my first arrow after 12 years of hunting with a bow fly. But I have passed on them before...

I agree with WNYBuckHunter. I do not go to the range like I use to but... when I did have the huntington rifle range open and I was a member I shot a bunch of rounds... 1000 round purchases was not out of the ordinary. It is much cheaper when you shot a lot and it's less hasle. Who wants to go to the store to buy ammo every week or two when you shot a lot. I feel this is just another stupid law that will not do anything to stop some idiot from killing people. Then the freak will just buy 10,000 rounds over the course of a year, this will not stop anything. It's just another stupid feel good law that won't do anything except water down our rights even more. Just because this idiot purchased online does not mean he could not go to the local walmart and get the same ammo. When was the last time you saw or heard of walmart or some other store deny someone ammo. Unless the person states bad intent it's hard to stop people from getting ammo. Red hair is not proof of ill intent... If he acted normal (or quite)for the 5 minuts it took to purchase the ammo, it would be done. Soon you will not be allowed to get anything more than a box of 20 rounds because some idiot goes nuts. Then you will have to prove you are using them. Then you will have to provide the range you use and some sort of proof you fired all the ammo. I agree, let them get re-elected and our rights as gun owners are going to be attacked again... I think they would take 5 miles if we give them a inch... This law would not have stoped this freak and is just another way of gov controling the population. If they can not arm themselves they can not fight back...Mandatory rifle registrations comeing soon? This way they know who to go after first... It is already a proven fact that an armed public is safer than unarmed. (Crooks think twice!) THE GOV JUST DOES NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW THIS... And all those people who say some one who was armed could not have stoped this guy are living in a dream world... When was the last time you saw a cop in a movie theater? They can not be every place yet a armed public can be... Plain and simple, allow people to carry fire arms then the crooks would not be the only ones with guns... -
Welcome aboard! Great site and info on many topics about hunting NY state. Great people too! Don't be afraid to post we like the extra input at any skill level. We cover a lot of differant subjects and tend to disagree on things which is always fun!!! Translation: We argue a lot because we have so many differant subjects from youth hunts to Blaze Orange to Cross Bows not to mention antler restrictions. Point: We(Hunters) are all dominant type personalities and tend to get a little bit over the edge sometimes, dont take it personal, we are all friends at the end of the day as a united hunting front wanting to preserve our treasured rights as our four fathers did... Does not matter if you are hunting squirels in the back yard or deer in some deep remote location if you are looking for good information you came to the right site! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do...

Agreed, I have never paper tuned my bow and can shoot a cd out to 65 yards when my form is good... Both bow's MQ1 and Heliem. I though it was needed but after talking to a bunch of people I can see it is not... Tuning is just not needed if form is good and consistant... I purchased my bow from C&B archery in Hicksville and asked if they did paper tune it, they said no. I asked why and they said the bow was set up to factory spec. I asked them to test it. Dustin shot a perfect hole, then I shot(my form was off at the time) and tore a big tear in the paper. After getting my form back and getting a stiffer spine (400s to 340s)I can see the bow shoots true... Now I just need a worthy deer to shoot!
