Going to try out some suffolk area this year for the first time. Depending on how bad the ticks are...

What a difference a year can make.

Nice buck! -
44 Mag in model 94 AE 2 bucks 2000-2010 308 H & K 1 buck 2007 Missed one with this gun so upsetting... Last time I used this gun. My only 3 deer... Missed with the 30-06, my first gun. I really want to get that gun bloody so I can retire it to a nice glass case. Man does this gun show character, 23 years of it... But it shoots excellent savage model 110... Still have yet to shoot at a deer with my bow 13 years, hopefully this is the year I get a chance at a good buck!

Very cool!

Free pass... If he is young he will be a brute next year. If he is older and has a wide body indicating a more mature deer he might be on the hit list... As long as you have fun, it's all good!

One of the reasons I use mechanical is that they fit in my shoulder quiver better, yet I usually have a fixed blade in my rest while hunting. They come out of the quiver nice too... I have never shot a deer with my bow,(most get a free pass)so I can not say what is better. I have heard really good reports on the Rage... In so far as changing your poundage, don't bother. With the bows of today you are probably shooting in the range of 250 fps or better which is more than enough for deer. The few times you did not get a pass through was probably due to a bone. Sometimes the none pass through shots do more damage as that blade is moving in the cavity... Quartering shots require a lot of force to get through the other side. (big cavity) The 1st impact of the arrow on the ribbs probably takes much of the force out of the shot, even if the rib is missed going in it has a large area to cover before hitting the exit point and sometimes it just does not have enough energy to get through but it will still end with a good kill... And I agree with WNYBuckHunter, if your bow is set up properly and you have good form you arrow will shoot the same regaurless of tip used. I go out hunting with multiple types of tips, mainly because I still have them all. One for Turkey, one for small game(field tip) and the rest are for deer, usually 2 extra...

Nov 3- 13th 2nd vacation! Getting pumped! Sounds on the money to me. Getting sighted for Sep 27th scouting\hunting trip!

We use to be... I can not imagine moving out of the USA ever... Even though we are going down hill at an alarming rate and our politicains are not helping(unless it has to do with a raise for themselves or better heath coverage for THEMSELVES...) I still believe we are great, just not the greatest any more, and no I do not know who is.

Nice group especialy for your first shots!!! I try not to shoot at known yardage any more. (I shoot a lot!) I shoot from 30 yards to about 70 unless in a 3d shoot. 30 and less is just not much of a challenge any more, we have little green army men hanging from a string that I consistantly stake to the back of the target (my only known yardage 30). I took out a tack yesterday at about 41 yards. OMG shooting is fun especialy long distance, IMO. Just remember if you start to get tired stop! I see myself doing really bad things when I get tired, and I hope you do not put the bow away till the season starts. I still hold my bow with closed hand when I shoot but it works for me... Now I just have to get more consistant past 50 yards... And yes I would shoot a deer at up to 45-50 yards and out to 65 if they are laying down... (can not jump the string then...) I see no problem with shooting this far if you practice... When I do not shoot a lot I am good out to about 45 yards max...

I hope you get him, nice follow up, thanks. He is a real beauty.

Although I do not see very many ECO's from what that document says they are still around. Like it says a ECO is a DEC police officer. Thats one thing I always remember is they are always armed and DEC officers are not always armed. (Probably depends on level/rank involement of enforcement with DEC.) I have heard stories of people getting ticketed for something because they though the guy behind them could not give out traffic tickets... They use to drive white/green trucks with lights on them and are probably our best defense against poachers. While I do not get to see Bruce the park ranger that comes to inspect our camp site(I am usually in the woods...) I can tell you he will enter it at will... He is a great guy and is welcome in my camp and tent any time... I believe as a stewart of the forest and officer to it's conservation he has every legal right to inspect a camp site and tent. "Like everything, it is written in black and white but has gray all over it" I agree with you on that cwhite. Once a person is caught poaching I believe that is enough evidence for inspection and confiscation of a dwelling but I am not sure. The person I remember was caught giving the meat away, he apparently shot one to many. Possibly this factor is what lead to his confiscation, it is possible he allowed the officer in the dwelling as well...

Welcome aboard! While I do go from before sunrise to sunset and beyond sometimes, it is a long day. Doing it consecutivly is hard and makes it more of a chore than anything else. I can not imagine doing anything else but eating and sleeping when I get back from hunting. But sometimes I cover a lot of area. Good luck!

While I am sure that is true, it does not affect what they can do. While we wish they could investigate everything that is reported to them, I am sure they have to prioritize thier work load. Unfourtunatly they can not check every report and or respont to every call.
-
Plain and simple DEC can say they saw a hunter or thought they saw a hunter and were going to check for proper tags on any property... Which gives them freedom to go anywhere... Again report any illegal activity on any outdoor area you think they can not go and they will march in... No warrents needed. They can do this if illegal digging, dumping or anything that can effect water, or soil contamination... Spot someone dumping harmfull chemicals in a remote area that is private and posted and they will check it out... I can understand how entering a house has much differant rules that have probably changed many times since I last check that info...

What it means is if you are allowed to shoot a bow in that town you are legaly allowed to hunt... Bow only... It depends on the town ordanances. Are fire arms allowed, ahh that I doubt unless it is legal to discharge a gun in that town... If the town allowes discharge of a bow you are legaly allowed to hunt that town with a bow is how I understand it. The most importian thing is to check with the town to see what is legal in so far as shooting implement... EX: If huntington allows hunting with a bow this year, Caumset state park might be legal to hunt. You have to check with town regulations... PS: Most towns on LI do not allow discharging fire arms(except out east) so this would be restricted to bow only where towns now allow hunting, or discharging of a bow... Shotguns will still be limited to the towns that allow it's use. EX: I am sure huntington is still a no discharge town for fire arms... IF you guys find out anything more on this or if I am wrong let me know. I would like to know more... I will check out more on this...

If that is true hunting as a sport will die out... And will be used by very few individuals. I agree access is a big issue. Even up in the ADK I do not see the woods as having many access points. Any area's by towns are frowned upon for hunting and very few people cater to hunters except for motels and dinners. I always wondered why with so much land they would not make it easyer to access. Some area's you can drive for miles before you can pull over and hunt. If more area's were made accessable it would be more inviting to hunters in general. Other issues are the way society views hunting as a whole. Most are misinformed and mislead to believe it is harmfull to the animals and hunting in a modern society is not needed. Internet, video games etc. are watering down our values. Kids have so many options to take up thier time that the outdoors are the last thing they are interested in. Best proposal I ever heard was the one where they were suppose to introduce hunting or outdoors survival into the class rooms, bet that never happens... It would work but good luck getting it past the liberals...

ECO officers can enter any house if probable cause is evident, no warrent needed, yet they are only allowed to check freezers/refridge... If you get caught poaching they can enter your house and take all your meat, I know a local upstate who had this happen to him. This guys roomate poached a deer then the ECO officer cam to the house and took every piece of meat in it, including everything he just went shoping for and his legal deer that was tagged. That was a long time ago but I think they can still do this if you are caught poaching... DEC can come on any property to inspect for bait, poaching, or just to check your licence... They have free range of open space. I know a guy who lost his life time hunting privledge due to salt licks, you think the DEC gives a crap if he is tresspassing on your property? If you think this is not true call them on a property you think they can not enter that has illegal activity and they will march in no warrent needed for conservation of NYS game laws... Or environmental issues. While many might not think they are real police, they have every right a normal officer has and more... These are the laws as I understand them, each officer has differant obligations and restrictions. ECO officers have a wide range of options, entering private or posted property is not off limits to them or DEC. ECO are one of the only officers that can legaly enter a house with out a warrent if probable cause is cited like being caught poaching... This is the way it was, not sure if things have changed...

If a spoon was the only weapon allowed and mature bucks or doe were the only prey, I would be in the middle of the ADK with a spoon on opening day trying to figure out how to get a deer that day. Challenge is one of the reasons I hunt where I do, I am told it is impossible, not enough deer, to much area to cover and the list goes on. Love the challenge of: Finding deer tracks and interpreting sign Hiking till my body is sore, then doing it again the next day and the next, repeat till success or enough sign is found. (Thank you advil) If stalking deer in deep woods solo with a bow is not challenging im not sure what is... Hunting does not have to be challenging, you can shoot from the window of your cabin if you want or pay for a hunt, to each his own... I hunt for the challenge, that is why I pass many deer in the southern zone. Hunting is what you make of it. I love hunting rifle season in a wall tent like our four fathers might have, the tent set up alone is a challenge lol. Thankfully for me food is never a challenge as we have great cooks that have dinner ready when I return. Getting a buck where it is said to be almost impossible, the feeling of accomplishment is like winning 1st place. If deer hunting was banned in NY I would move...(Prob to Maine) No other beast has the majestic quality of prey a deer will hold for me. In my book they are the most beautiful and illusive animal I can hunt. While some love hunting turkey and others go for wild coyote hunting, big bucks will always get my heart pumping. Deer are nice but a big monarch buck is majestic IMO... 9 weeks 4 days and counting till Sept 27th, shot a 265 today at our 3D shoot, plenty of excuses for that score, few 20's saved me in the end lol.

The only open fields I have where I hunt are usually swamps for the most part. They are hard to hunt and almost impossible to traverse. I plan on spending more time trying to find remote swamps that they hide in this year. I have 2 locations on my google earth that look nice, one has 4 swampy area's right next to each other. Both are within about a 1/2 mile area so I plan on checking both spots in one day. I have one other spot that has some doe I plan on checking out, yet the bucks seem to always be high on the ridges. Not so easy with a bow yet it's more for scouting at that time... Not sure if the link will work for everyone but this is one of the area's I hunt. I put a 2nd link on below if the 1st does not work. Make sure you click on satellite on top rt for arial view. I am planing on checking out wolf creek, Jimmy pond and the 4 small swamps just north of Wolf lake(Wolf is at the bottom of the page), . The high ridges in the area seem to have buck trails and it has a good amount of doe, well at least for the area any doe is a lot... I only hope that one of these spots is a hidden spot for them... Or may be a pass through area like you all mention above. I get excited just seeing tracks, lol... The 2nd link works better but the 1st has better details after you zoom in, Wolf lake is above West Canadian Lake a few miles. http://www.google.co...itbutton_normal http://mapq.st/NDOntq Funny, a good friend once asked why I hunt in an area where I am told their are no deer. I said that is why I hunt thier, I am told it's impossible... I love doing the impossible, just hope it's not another 8 years before I do it again... Missing 3 nice bucks in the ADK has probably driven me more than anything... I think Dan Ladd once said any ADK buck is a trophy and I agree 100%.
