  1. I had a guy that used to hunt in my camp that wore hunting close that his wife washed and then dried with downy fresh. I could smell that stuff 100 yards away so the deer in the next county could probably smell him. We still laugh about that in camp.
  2. I read an article a long time ago about this hunter who was doing some repair work on his tractor and in doing so he was covered in diesel fuel. He said when he was finishing up the work he noticed this huge buck had come in real close sniffing the air and eventually him. Being it was hunting season he picked up a handgun he kept near him while he worked and shot it. Not that I would reccomend spraying yourself down with diesel fuel but it is interesting.
  3. Hey Forest I hunt just on the other side of the mountain from you in Westkill. I've also done some hunting in Fleishmans, many years ago. Did you fare well with all the flooding? Hope so.
  4. Sounds like Orvisman is on a hair trigger. I wouldn't want him anywhere near me in the woods. Fasteddie didn't "disrespect" you he was just suggesting that it might be hard to find land to hunt for this season if you are just begining your search now. If that sets you off I feel bad for someone who does slam their door in your face.
  5. I use 200gr Hornady Leverevolutions in my .35 Marlin (awesome bullet) I usually use 180 gr Federal Power Shock in my Model 70 Win. .30-06 sometimes 180gr Fusions
  6. What a freakin' paw on that thing !!! I bet that guy's butt is still puckered.

    Acorns

I'm looking forward to a year with less acorns. The past 2 seasons there were acorns everywhere and saw very little deer movement. Maybe this season the deer will have to look around a little for them.
  8. I tend to agree with a lot of you in that a Rem. 700 is a great rifle let's not forget a model 70 Win. either but for a "first rifle" for deer in NY might I suggest a .35 Marlin 336 lever action ?
  9. Does anyone know of any public rifle ranges around the West Kill, Lexington area in Greene county?
  10. It was so much easier to get a CCW permit in NC. It took me about 3 to 4 months from application to getting a permit here. Of course NY is the only state I travel through who doesn't honor my permit so I can't bring any handguns on my hunting trip.
  11. Hopefully the roads and bridges will be passable by the time the season opens. If not it's the long way around through Hunter Mnt. for me.
  12. I think a hunter who pays for a tag has the right to take any deer they want as long as it's a legal, ethical kill.Doe, Spike, 4 ptr. or otherwise and anyone who thinks they have the right to preach just because someone else doesn't hunt the same way is wrong. Bottom line. I think as hunters we should respect each others differences in what deer is suitable or exceptable to take as long as it's legal.
  13. Correct. It's considered a barbed broadhead so it's illegal.

    coming soon.

Won't be up in NY until Nov. 15th. Just started to inventory my gear. Bow opened here 2 days ago in NC. It's too hot though. I can't sit in the woods when it's 90 degrees out.
  15. It can be difficult if your land doesn't already have fields, but any little clearing can work. It's ok to have several little "honey holes" instead of a couple of sprawling food plots. They do make seeds that can be planted with out tilling and clearing. Bottom line is you do the best you can with what you have.
  16. Well I know 42 was closed from the hurricane a week or so ago up at the notch. My buddy who lives there said there was a rock slide but he said that was fixed now. As for this last rain they got I haven't talked to him yet so I'm not sure. But now that you've said that I guess I should call him and make sure all is well.
  17. Orion, They still do camp out there on rt.42 on that State Land Parking area. We call it "tent city". I actually know a few of those guys from talking to them at the Mountain Brook. There are to groups that camp there, one is called The Notchmen and the other is Whack'em and Stack'em.
  18. Yeah the really steep part is called the "Notch" and every year there is a monster taken up on top. The area I hunt is lower, if your traveling north on 42 after that really steep area you'll start coming down the other side of the notch. As you get to the bottom of the valley you'll see a side road on your left called Beech Ridge Rd. I hunt up off of that rd. Jennings hill, Condon Hollow, and that area.
  19. This is a topic near and dear to my heart ! Great rifle ! My Dad got me one as my first hunting rifle and I absolutely love the thing. My Dad, his Dad, friends, Uncles all use it. They all love it. It's definitely killed the most deer in our camp. Like you guys I have a .30-06 (model 70 Win.) that I'll use if I think I need some more range, but when I'm poppin' that brush or the weather is nasty you can bet that .35 Marlin will be along. I would like to suggest to you guys if you haven't already, start using Hornady Leverevolution Ammo. These bullets are unbelievable !!! They are the first pointed bullets that can be used in a lever action and what a difference they make. Some Marlins might have trouble cycling these bullets through if yours does just contact Marlin and send it to them and they'll fix the problem for free. It's well worth it trust me !My Fathers older .35 had no trouble but mine did so I sent it to Marlin and it works great now with the new ammo.
