  1. I'm glad your kitty is ok. I know the feeling when one of our little furry friends go missing or get into trouble.
  2. If it's below 40 hanging it is fine. That's the way we've done it and never had any problems. If it's warm I keep the skin on and then pack the body cavity with bags of ice and keep it out of the sun (if it's daytime). Then I suggest getting it to the butcher ASAP.

    rain

I'd much rather have some snow then rain for hunting. I'm tired of the heat down here. Hunting when it's 85 is not fun. Not to mention the snakes and the bugs.
  4. They actually do get stuck like that more then you think. I've seen a few pics of 2 dead bucks locked together. What a slow death that must be.
  5. So what was the deal eddie? My money was on Bigfoot !
  6. Here's the website for Hunting Regs http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/hunting.html
  7. Our older guys who can't get around like they used to don't hunt as much so they come up and cook. Homemade pizza, calzones, minestrone soup, pasta fagioli. If someone gets a deer it's sauteed back straps in olive oil and garlic, venison parm. I know it's awful. LOL
  8. Sopressata !!? You belong in my hunting camp. A lil vino, provolone, roasted peppers, sopressata, fresh semolina itlaian bread. Then comes dinner. Italian Deer camp is the best !! We gain 20 pounds by the end of hunting season.
  9. I love Rocky Boots but when it's really cold and there's snow on the ground I use Sorel pac boots.
  10. wow ! His body is big ! His antlers look more like muley antlers. Very nice, hope you put an arrow right in his pump house !
  11. G Man thats sound logic and I couldn't agree with you more. I couldn't believe the amount of acorns last season and the season before. Everywhere I looked there were acorns and I could count on one hand how many deer I saw. That was one theory I had for seeing so few deer. They didn't have to go anywhere to find food ! So now your saying the acorns are fewer and the apples are more ? That's music to my ears because the land I hunt just so happens to have the only apple trees I know of in that area.
  12. Yeah I watch Ole' Roger Raglin. But he's an old school legend. He reminds me of my Dad or some of the older guys he used to hunt with. I wouldn't lump him in with the rest of the "Hollywood" Hunting "Pros" (I use that word loosely).
  13. I used to use tink's 69 but everyone and their brother uses that so I started using other brands. I like Special Golden Estrus because of the dating system. I also use Code Blue and Buck Bomb. This season I'm going to make mock scrapes and use a dripper over them with power scrape. G-Man is right about the tarsal glands. That is a great way to attract deer. Good advise
  14. I'm not familiar with that area but it sounds like a great spot. Goodluck this season !

    Stateland

I know horseback riding is restricted on state land in certain areas. So I would check with DEC before you go.

    Thief

Sorry to hear that. It really sucks when people sink to that level. They don't care or respect other peoples stuff or appreciate their effort to be a better hunter when they resort to stealing like that. Don't let it ruin your season though. Maybe you'll get rewarded with a nice buck for your troubles ! Good luck this season.
  17. also very good advice. I would add that if you are going to still hunt (walk a little then stop and repeat) really take your time you'll be surprised at how many deer you can see just by slowly walking then stop and scan the woods for a while, maybe do a few grunting sessions then stay quiet, then move. You can cover a lot of area that way. You asked what you should do if you see deer that are far away and aren't headed your way. One thing I might suggest is try and study the deer buck or doe. Try and get a feeling of the deer's behavior, is it spooked or jumpy? Or if it's a buck does he have his nose to the ground on the trail of a doe? Sometimes noticing stuff like that will help you in closing the distance. Sometimes it's you that has to make a move to get in range. If you do try and move when his head is down or otherwise distracted. In stalking situations always be aware of what that wind is doing. I like to have a little spray bottle with buck urine, doe pee, or estrus if it's during the rut. When I have a deer in sight that I'm trying to stalk and I notice the wind changing direction or if it starts swirling I like to mist some scent in the air just to maybe fool that deer nose long enough to get the shot it sometimes will even make them come to you if' they're curious. Hope that helps a little.
  18. I love seeing everyone's sacred deer camps. This is a great thread ! I would be happy to have any one of these camps. I know I'm thankful to have what I do to hunt. What really makes all these places we stay and hunt great are the people we share it with. Family, friends and deer camp make such great memories. I sure love all the memories I have of all the past seasons
  19. Nice pics bushwhack ! That is a real nice looking camp also. That is the essence of deer camp, beautiful. Good luck to you this season.
  20. Never had that. I've had sauteed heart in red wine. Really good. I thought it would be really tough but it wasn't. The older Italian guys I hunt with always want the heart when someone gets a deer.
  21. I forgot, trail mix too ! Make my own
  22. Oh snacks ? Of course ! Most of the time I pack a lunch in an effort to hunt all day. That usually would be a sandwich of some kind. As for snacks my fav. is definitely Jerky. Either beef or venison. I try to have an ample supply made to last most of the season and if I have to eat store bought it's usually jack link's. I've also been known to take all the left over halloween candy now and then lol. Granola or protein bars are good also. I'll always have water with me. On the cold days gotta have a thermos of hot coffee or hot choc.
