It indeed is a tragedy. But I disagree with you that it's both of their faults. In my humble opinion, the shooter should have clearly identified the target even before raising his firearm. That is what binos are for. Moreover, most deer that I have seen have four legs (except for the one trailcam picture posted on another thread of the three legged deer) and they are a lot shorter than a person standing erect. More importantly it happened at 8:00AM when there is plenty of light out. Even if the victim was not wearing blaze orange and assuming he was wearing camo, in my six years of hunting I haven't seen any deer wearing camo. Their hides are a solid color. There is simply no excuse for this tragedy. I hunt on private land and we all know where our stands are and where we are sitting. We make it a point not to shoot anything in the direction of where the other stands are located and if we have to, we make sure that the trajectory is at a downward angle and that the only place a bullet can go is down into the ground. We also text or signal each other to know that we are in our stands and set up before anyone takes any shots. In the end it truly is a tragedy for all involved.

I was heading out to Court in Riverhead this morning by exit 71. As I'm driving in the middle lane about 1/2 mile from the exit a white Huyndai wagon blew right passed me on the left. Seconds later I see a bright blue Dodge Charger following it. A second later I see red and blue lights flashing on the rear of the Charger. Pulls him over. Never seen it before. New undercover. Saw the cop in the car with the uniform and all. On way back, I see another car that looked like a chevy cavilier flying in the left lane eastbound with red and blue flashers on as well. It did not look like a Volunteer Fireman's lights. They were definitely Suffolk Patrol. Just thought I'd alert you all using the LIE.

Cool videos. Although I think I would be crapping my pants on the first one. LOL I don't know how that guy sat so calmly filming that bear climbing the ladder.

LMAO!!! But seriously, I use a caplight and carry a smaller mag lite on my belt when I walk to my stand. I walk down a logging road that is covered with cedars and overhanging canopy. Its pitch black even if the horizon is lighting up in the fields. During rifle season, I'm carrying my rifle with a round in the chamber and pointed downrange in front of me with the safety on. I know there are no bears in my area, mainly yotes. But ya never know! And yes I unload it when I reach the foot of my stand and before I climb up and hoist it.

Another tragedy unfolds . . . Teenage hunter in a tree stand in Minnesota sticks a loaded firearm between his legs apparently muzzle up and as he is taking off his jacket, the firearm discharges shooting him in the leg. No details on how he died. I guess he died from bleeding out? I feel bad for him and his family. At least this wasn't another hunter mistaking another person for wild game. Still very sad. Kid had his whole life ahead of him. http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2011/11/08/minn-teen-accidentally-shot-killed-self-hunting/

Looks good. He's right about the hoist rope, always swings and twists on me on the way up and down. Real annoying.

Awesome job Bret!! Great first buck! You will never forget your first!

Well said Culver!

You should have roasted her on a "souvla". (For those non-Greeks, a souvla is a BBQ pit with a self turning motor for roasting a whole baby lamb on Easter)

Well said 132! Coming from experience . . . Sully, it's not a matter of catching hell. You are right, it's a matter of choice. If you choose to climb without a harness, then so be it. But you can't ignore statistics that most falls from treestands whether they are climbers or permanent stands, could be prevented by the use of a harness. I don't think you would disagree. I wish you best of luck and that you are safe in your hunts.

It is so much easier to pan with the arm. I cannabilized an old tripod and bought the clamp on Amazon for $4. The black nib attached to the screw on the clamp was .99. It works great. I use a one-man ladder stand with arm rests and a gun rail. I attach it to the arm rest on my right side being that I'm a rightie. That way its not in front of you interfering with your draw. You can even attach it to a tree limb if necessary. Just gotta make sure its firmly attached otherwise the last video you see will be of you looking down at the camera as its falling - I actually picked up a cheap tripod with panning arm at target for $15. I'm going to be making one for my brother.

Do you really think the deer are gonna know the difference if they see a black tether attached to your back and wrapped around a tree at 15' not to mention 30'? I'll answer that question for you, I'm 99.999% positive the deer are not gonna notice the black straps against tree that far up. I use the Hunters Safety System vest harness which has 5 buckles - two small ones on your chest, one across your waist and two seat-belt size buckles that go around your legs. The vest is camo and the straps are black. It's easy to put on and off. You can even probably wear it underneath your camo jumpsuit or whatever camo gear you have on as long as the tether comes out the back. Many jumpsuits nowadays have a slot you can stick the tether through if you really want to cover any "non-camo clothing" you may be wearing. I got it end of season on sale at Dicks for $59. To me it just ain't worth the risk. I love hunting. I enjoy it with a passion and it is my obession, but I love my life and my family a helluva lot more than risking my life to hunt without one.

Man what is with these guys who climb that high without a harness? I think its a macho-man "not gonna happen to me" attitude? Really sad!
