  1. Welcome to the forum. Good group of guys with lots of information to share. Good hunting this season! Be safe!
  2. 44 Y.O. man killed in Illinois and son injured. 53 Y.O. charged. Really sad . . . http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20111122/news/711229830/
  3. A duck hunter in Idaho was shot by his dog. Read it here: http://jacksonholeradio.com/?p=5584 The dumbass hunter should not have left his firearm loaded.
  4. I hear you John. I'm in the same boat. We had plans set a month ago to head up to the cabin for Thanksgiving and also do some hunting. Well . . . last minute all has changed. My brother in law (who owns the house we go to upstate), his kids (27 & 24 y.o) didn't want to go because one has to work the next day and the other has a High School reunion. My parents were supposed to go to my brother's house but last minute my brother and his wife and kids decided to go elsewhere. So my parents were left out along with my dad's brother and his son. So we offered to cook at my house for my parents, my uncle and cousin. Well it turns out my uncle and cousin decide to go to his brother in law's house leaving my parents alone again. So then my brother in law decides to have thanksgiving at his house on LI and invited my parents along. Oy vey! What a hassle. I just want to eat turkey too!
  5. This is my own recipe for venison stew: Ingredients: Venison (obviously) 3-4 lbs cut into cubes Tomatoe paste 1 jar Diced onions 1-2 cups Carrots 1 cup Peppers diced 1 cup Salt and pepper to taste Garlic cloves 2-3 First brown the venison in vegetable oil. Remove venison and clear the frying pan. Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to frying pan and place the venison back on fryer and fry until vinegar evaporates. In a large sauce pan fry up the garlic until transparent. Add tomato paste. Bring to a rapid boil. Add 1-2 cups of water. Bring to a boil. Add the venison, cut carrots, onions, peppers. Bring to a boil. Let the stew simmer for at least three hours. I prefer placing it on a wood stove. This is what it looks like:
  6. This past opening saturday i'm sitting in my stand and at about 7:30am a huge hawk flies down and lands on the branch right above me. It was so close I could have reached out and touched it. It perched there for about 10 secs. By the time I got my phone out of my jumpsuit to take a picture it flew off. This is why I love hunting and being outdoors.
  7. I hunt on private land. Opening weekend there were five of us. We were all at least 150-200 yds away from each other and we all know where the other is sitting so we limit our range of fire so as not to include any of the directions where the others are sitting.
  8. Opening weekend was a bust for me. Only saw about 5 doe running out of the corn into the brush to my right. No shot. At about 7:00AM I had an oddball buck (Picture on the right) running a doe right under my stand. He nearly bumps into my tree. He stops to my right and looks up at me, I looked at him and he continued on. I named him "Oddball" from the movie Kelly's Heros. The doe comes running out of the brush to my right and stands right in front of my stand at 25 yards. She winds me and trots off back where she came from. I decided to let her pass as it was way too early. Yesterday morning I see a half a six pointer stumble out of the corn directly in front of me and he stands broadside for about 3 minutes. He had 3 points on one side and nothing on the other. It must have fallen off during fighting. It was as if he was teasing me and telling me - "Ha! I know you won't shoot me cause I only got one antler. Na na na na na na". I let him pass and "we" agreed that next year we will meet at the same place, same time and he promised that he would keep his other antler. The best part of the weekend was when I checked my trail cam on Friday morning. Much to my surprise I was delighted to see this big brute (left picture) coming through the trail at 11:30AM on November 7th. I saw him during my sit on Saturday in the middle of the corn field just popping his head up a few times and bedding back down. No shot presented. I named him Brutus. I can't wait until the locals harvest the corn. I got tired of looking back and forth trying to determine if I saw a tail flick or the ear of corn stalk moving. After a while your mind starts playing tricks on you. Hopefully next time I go up he'll still be around and the corn will be cut.
  9. Back in my stand. Beautiful nite. Stars and moon are out. Less wind this morning.
  10. Five does and an oddball spike yesterday morning and no movement at all in the afternoon. Hoping for some movement this morning.
  11. Great picture. Can't wait to bring my 10 yo son with me in two years.
  12. Well opening day has come and gone. Out of five of us only one got a small button buck. My 77 yo father in law killed it this afternoon thinking it was a doe. He's gonna provide some good eats. Another shot tomorrow to try to fill the freezer.
  13. Colder than expected this morning. Gonna try all day sit.
  14. Been sitting in stand since 5:30. Saw bunch of does and an oddball buck right under stand. Huge hawk landed on branch above me. Wind at my back for a change.
  15. So i spent the day doing some glassing, looking at 200+ pics on my trailcam. Got a big 8 pt floating around on my camera. 100+ inches on Buckscore. Had a great dinner- spaghetti with fresh homemade sauce, and tripe with homemade wine. Smoked a nice cigar and now finishing the day with a snifter of Couvasier 15 yo cognac sitting by a wood stove. Can it get better than this? Yes ... All that plus a big 8 pt hanging in the barn tomorrow morning.

    Cooking

Cooking at my house is usually split between the wife and I. But I do most of the BBQing all year round (even through the winter in a foot of snow - first place I clean with my snow blower is around my grill.) I especially like to cook backstraps. She hates the smell of cooking venison. But she's a trooper - she'll still do it sometimes.
  17. 26 yo Deer hunter in Michigan kills his 23 yo brother sitting in a deer blind. Very sad. There has gotta be more to this story. http://www.wilx.com/home/headlines/Deer_Hunter_Fatally_Shot_by_Brother_in_Mecosta_County_134026648.html
  18. A la Uncle Ted: "I'm cocked, locked and ready to rock opening day!!" Any one else???
  19. I think he meant it to those who are afraid to get ticks on them, they can stay home and playing a hunting game on the WII. LOL!
