Geno, i hope you didn't think i was bashing you or your score with my last comment. I was bashing myself for having a brain cramp with the P &Y score.. I stick with my original comment in that i think your pretty close.. Joe is way off though.LOL

That fox is not your problem. Although he is a dandy . I believe you have wore out your welcome in that particular spot and the deer have found a safer place to hang out. Or they are simply hitting a different food source so they have changed their pattern. Whatever the case, don't fret about it, just adjust. Thats what most people have to do every season. And although technically a canine, if you go around telling people you shot a dog with your bow, that won't be recieved very well.. It's a Fox

And now that i've shown that i don't know what i'm talking about, LOL i'll still disagree with you on the mass Joe. Especially on the 5 side. I mean 12'' a side is like 2 year old spindly.

My bad on the Pope and young comment, For some reason i had 130" in my head.

Larry, looks like your 15 days off are going to be timed just right. I've also been seeing that the scrapes are red hot right now.. Hunted sun afternoon and passed over 5 or 6 on my way in. At least 3 were hit when i walked out in the dark. Unfortunately they are all in an area we don't like to hunt but it let me develope some info that might help this afternoon.. If it stops raining here. Agghh

My client just sent me this picture of a nice buck he is trying to put the drop on.. Whenever i put in a plot for someone, i always am a bit nervous about the results. So it's always great to know that our efforts are being rewarded.. As i've tryed to tell people, they usually are. -
yea, i've read about that in the past. LOL . And he doesn't even get mad or anything. Women and African are both welcome at his place.

Congrats on the doe. Iwill throw in a little shot decision hate but no need to debate, just giving a little advice to a young hunter for next time. 30 yrds quartering towards is pretty risky. You got the job done with a very good shot but maybe a bit more patience would have got you a broadside or quar. away. You younins' are always in a hurry. LOL Relax and let the good shots come to you.. Glad you made it all work out. congrats

Sorry Burt, i thought i read a coyote with a haircut and two bucks that got spared. I've yet to get down to our camp in 9p but hope the action is half as good as ya'll are having at your place. I'm sure there will be some blood spilled soon. I also think it's mighty big to open your place up to people of all walks of life and even let them shoot your deer when your not there. Looking forward to the pics of Doe and Steve's successful hunt.

Well based on your profile picture, you know what a big one looks like.. Good luck to ya and welcome to the site..

Nothing beats hunting at camp.. Team Legend needs to quit drinking in the stand though. 3 shots-3 misses.

I like to tell you for sure what that was but you hunt the north and i hunt farmland fingerlakes region. It's like Africa up there. You guys are crazy to hunt up there in the dark. Ijust hear the little bunnies hopping around down here. LOL

I agree that Geno is close but i dont think either beam is 20'' and the brows are 4". This is for sure... He's no where near 140""..I don't even think Pope and Young. I'd say 125-129". 3yr old . Although he certainly does not have great mass, i do think he should at least be 13" per side..

I have killed deer in the rain. light drizzle or rain that comes and goes throughout the day can be very productive. The key is to be out there, waiting out the rain so that when it does end, your in position to catch these deer getting up off their beds for a stretch and to shake the rain off their backs. So i like to be close to bedding on these wet days. By the way, i did sit a field edge that first sunday of the season, which rained almost all day long. Despite the weather, i saw 6 bucks and 19 does/yearlings. Action was good all day but when the rain stopped, the bigger deer started moving. I used the umbrella and never even broke out the rain gear.

Just added the salmonella FACT in to more emphasize the risks of relying on freezing to protect you from food bourne illnesses. Again, i agree with you, in that it is the best proceedure to freeze your venison. Just not willing to count on it after i dragged my carcass through the swamp. Or after you gut shoot a deer and let him lay over night. Just saying Freezing is not saving you from potential problems.

I hunt rain or shine. BUT you better have a very good shot if your going to pull that trigger in the rain. NO iffy shots and if it's late and you have to track in the dark and rain, you have a real challenge. All that said, unless it's wind and rain, or a complete downpour, i find the deer movement to be good in some key areas. Usually thicker cover, near bedding. And one of my most valuable pieces of equiptment, without a doubt, is my tree umbrella. It is literrally worth it's weight in gold. I was sceptical at first but i can promise you if you use it, you will love it.

Yea i think he is a 2 yr old. And a solid one at that. It's more his body that makes me think thats his age. Anyway he certainly has Big Daddy potential..

Don't want to debate either but the fact remains. Unless you have a deep flash freezer as commercial sushi providers do, you will not kill most parasites. And unless your trusting hunting forum posts or the missiouri venison king, freezing will not kill most bacteria as well. Of course i'm not saying it is not a good idea to do so, as freezing will halt the growth at that level. A level if handled properly that most humans can handle. E-coli is also not killed by freezing. Once the meat is thawed, the bacteria will re-start it's growth process once again. Also Salmonella will survive freezing. When Freezing meat follow the old saying.. Quality in quality out . Garbage in Garbage out.

G & R Cop Just so you know, freezing does not kill most bacteria or parasites...

Predator, you nailed it. As far as my approach goes anyway. And don't get me wrong, i have the horns and grunt with me at all times. Believe me , if i see a big buck 200yrds away cutting a field edge, I'm going to give him some horns and a grunt to change his mind a bit. I just am not to fond of blind calling. Like i said, i may not be using a valuable tool to it's full advantage but where i hunt, every mature buck in the county has been blown at 20 times. I'll stay quiet and let them think all is safe on my turf .
-
Heres my 2 cents on calling. Being that i only hunt mature bucks, i very rarely make a peep. I'm sure my conservative approach has maybe limited my opprtunities at some deer in the past but my approach is this. Big bucks are incredibly smart and they will almost always find a way to get down wind of you and bust you before you'll ever get a shot off. That is a risk i can't take. I would rather that buck never know i'm there and try to fight the battle with him another day, then to have him bust me once and never see him again ever.. Almost every hunter i know has called in and killed a buck before but i would say that maybe 1 out of 50 mature bucks can be fooled. The other 49 the neighbor shoots because you just freaked him off your property. Of course if mature bucks are not your thing then clang away and blow that grunt and you will no doubt eventually get some small bucks to respond.
-
I agree and apologize for adding to the non sence. Lets get back to the harvests. I'll start with this buck that i mentioned yesterday. Shot by a guy that does some of my taxidermy work. Super nice guy and couldn't be happier for him. Buck was shot just outside Letchworth park. Congrats to Dan..
