Knives are cool. My current carry weapon is a Buck Special Edition. I've lost a bunch of knives over the years. Some i really miss to this day, some i never want to see again.LOL And working the stone is almost therapudic. When i'm super stressed or board, putting a new edge on the blades seems to make things better.

Apparently curious minds don't really want to know. Just closed minds..

Slowhand, you say that the deer will be there food plots or not but do you really believe that? You posted up that picture of two really nice bucks and claim you have been chasing the one for 4 years, but he only shows up during the rut. You've been chalking that up to him being nocturnal but maybe he just has a better place to spend his time during the season. Maybe a place that offers him everything he needs like Food, security and water. He may only step into your woods when he needs to find a doe. Food plots are not a magic bullet but there is nothing wasteful about evaluating your deer property and figuring out it's strengths and weaknesses. And then going forward with steps to eliminate the weaknesses. If your style is to just show up and hunt on Oct. 1st , and hope for the best, thats you choice. It works just fine for alot of people. But some land owners and hunters want more then that.

Good for you BJ. Some people don't go for the towers but i tell you what, they are a great place to go with our kids or with the ones we love that are getting up there in age. Can't tell you how many first time hunters we've taken up into the enclosed tower where you can talk and give pointers and see some deer and walk them through that first hunt. They are a great place to make memories while hunting.

I'd be glad to give you your very own plot without the need to buy a single piece of equipment. LOL Thats why we started Tosch Consulting. For people that want to improve their hunting experience without taking on the costs and labor of the project. And plots are not only for big buck hunters. You seem to keep down playing the buck capabilities in your hunting area, but 8F is a very good buck region. Maybe your property is just not great at holding them. Sorry if this sounded like a un-paid ad..

Looking for a .308 any advice
dave6x6 replied to Machine646's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I also have and love my Savage in 30-06. You'll be happy with either caliber but unless your planning on filling your gun cabinet with a bunch of rifles, (which we all love to do) the 30-06 may be a better choice for a first gun that does alot of things. With all the different grain bullets available to the 06' , you can hunt moose during the day and varmits at night, and everything in between, all with the same gun. Not the most glamourous round, but you can add some things to your arsenal down the road if you want. -
I know there are alot of savy camera guys here and alot of info out there but they make me a bit nervous as well. Fella i hunt with is even more nervous so i keep my cams away from his prime spots. Everything i've read says that IR's spook less, and i do believe that, but some models have a really distinctive shutter thump. Have you ever noticed how many big buck photos have them looking straight at the camera. Now maybe they are not spooked to the point of busting out, but they certainly seem to know it's there. As far as setting cameras up high, i'm not a big fan of that. To me, the scent you leave from checking and chging cards will educate a big buck faster then anything else so i don't want to be climbing around and spending any more effort at my cam site then is absolutely needed. You hunt state land though. Theft is a real possibility, so might be worth it in some cases.

Homemade fieldpoint target
dave6x6 replied to dave6x6's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
Well it was too hot out today to do anything productive so in true "red-neck" form, i decided to detail my home-made field point target. Originally just had stickers or duck tape to aim at but this is much better. LOL. Got a bunch of fiber fill and gonna start a second target but only suitcase i came up with so far is a flower print thing. That's not going to work... -

We touched on some of this on Doc's thread about food plots being too big. My take is this. Food plots can be expensive and the time and effort are substantial. But we currently have about 12 acres in perenials and another 10 or so set aside for annuals. Every year we evaluate how much money and time we have and what we want to achieve and go from there. Our goal is not hunting plots but year round food source so each spring we adjust as needed. The main thing is the results we see come hunting season. It is as much an enjoyment as hunting itself. The satisfaction of seeing big bucks is invaluable. We don't kill them every year but we do see them. Am i often overwhelmed? You bet. When it has only rained once in a month and time and money are short, you just try to prioritize things and move on. I encourage clients to make realistic goals and expectations. Don't bite off more then you can chew. Start with a managable plot and don't cut corners on the prep. If you enjoy it then expand your plans in the following years. Think of the long range not instant rewards..

My method may not be the best but it makes sense to me. This time of year my cameras are set up on the fringes. Thick hedge rows near food or travel highways. They are simply entertainment for me right now so i check them about every 2 weeks. I'll move them if things are slow or like this year, i get the same fawn in 70 pics. Come Sept. i'll move them into some of my better stand locations and they will stay there without checking them until the season starts and i sit in that stand for the first time. During that opening weekend, i'll review the cards and make a plan from there. I don't see a whole lot of reason to check them before the season starts, it's most likely not going to change my first couple sits anyways. Everything gets pulled out at this point and set up far away from good stands. Usually on main entry trail that i have to walk almost every day anyway. I don't really use them to make hunting decisions during the season. To risky to have them stinky, flashin' , shutter thumpin' things near the bucks.

Pygmy, didn't get everything off your chest in the AR thread??
-
Nice looking buck chief.. Look at the beer belly on that thing..
-
Nice bucks Wooly, Joe would be proud to have you shoot them.
-
Oh man.. That's like askin' if you'd still chase women even if you couldn't have sex..
-
LOL, I know what you mean defrazzle. I cant figure some of them out either. This one i know... AR = Antler Restriction
-
None of them seem to be perfect. Lot's of the reviews are very mixed. I took a chance with the CX and got fortunate enough to get two good ones. (so far) I have only used the red so can't tell you if there is a color that works better then that.

I shoot the Carbon Express Lazer Eye and have put hundreds of shots on them without any malfunctions. They are a blast to shoot.

So can anyone tell me how a RH would be scored if it happened in a Tournament or 3D competition? Would you get the score of the first arrow, or would it be a "no score" or do-over ??
-
As i told that poster, one of us is going to look stupid.... Well i guess it's me.LOL there's a surprise. I will say this though. Because he has not explained how he shoots three deer "many times", which of these sinarios make sense to you? Nuisance makes sense but doesn't really follow the content of his statement which was to point out the benifits of a one buck rule. If it's the second, then he didn't shoot his buck the previous year and so carried it over up north.. so that doesn't support his statement very well, because this would make him very unsuccessful down south and yet one hell of a buck killer up north. Then you have the third case where you tag using DMP's with antlers less then three inches... If thats his method then he is a chronic button buck killer or he purposely targets small bucks knowing he can put his DMP on it. Legal yes but not really something to brag about. Bonus tags in some areas is a viable explanation. Didn't concider that.. Stupid,stupid,stupid..LOL

Good advice but there are many circumstances when shooting differents spots are just not possible or practical, and arrows are going to get damaged. Tournament or 3D. Also there are times when group tuning is helpful. Neither were the case here, just laziness. I could not agree more with Doc in that it really is just luck and i'm not claiming any more, but i feel really locked in with my form right now and the fact that i was on target with the first two arrows out of the quiver from 30 yrds tells me that my practice of Blind Bale and long range practice is paying off.
