  1. Thanks, but I was hoping to try some from scratch, not buy seasoning kits. I've done the bourbon jerky it was good but I really want to try pepper sticks. I've made them with venison and pork mixed, not sure if pork and turkey would go good together. If I use straight turkey I feel it will be too dry.
  2. May 29th but I had to walk away from a gobbling bird at 12:00 on the 31st! really sucks, it's times like that I wish the DEC would change the season to 1:00pm.
  3. I love my venison snack sticks(pepper sticks) and was thinking of trying to make some with wild turkey breasts. Anyone have any suggestions or have any luck with smoking turkey pepper sticks? Hate to waste a good chunk of fresh turkey? Thanks
  4. the last day of May can be as good as the first. I killed my best bird ever on May 29, he gobbled his face off. (literally)Plus I've heard birds gobbling well into June. Got woke up while camping near Lake George june 6 by a bird that gobbled for well over an hour. So keep the faith and bring lots of refills for the thermal cell!!
  5. Decoys can work in late season, but I would use only hens and maybe 1 jake. I like to use a branch I pick up to get them up higher as the green fields are so deep. decoys don't work if they can't see them. It worked for me last weekend, I called in 4 jakes and 1 longbeard, the jakes came right to the dekes and the gobbler tried to check it out from a little distance, unfortunately for him, not far enough!
  6. I still have some carpenter tools that could use a workout, Who needs a bigger shed?
  7. if you dig into the spot with a boning knife, you will probably find the feather and pellet together. Seems the bb's pull a little piece of feather in with it. Yumm!
  8. Need to get back on that bird next morning
  9. Went out Saturday morning to Gr Island, needed a change of scenery from the tight lipped gobblers in the southern tier and the long AM drive. Didn't hear a gobble until 7 am when out of frustration I started calling a little more aggressively. Got a gobble very close!! I was in a blind on a field with 2 hen and 1 jake decoy out. called in 4 jakes had them right in front of the blind , so I decided to screw with em. I clucked loud on my slate and boom another gobble from the woods, there was a long beard with them. Killed him 5 minutes later, the bastard tried to sneak behind the blind. 19.8 lbs., 9-9/16" beard, 1" spurs. Bird #2 AND I'm tagged out!!Unbelievable as this season I haven't seen or heard many birds, but you can never kill one from the couch. Now what am I going to do all Memorial weekend?
  10. The turkeys have definately gotten quiet! Tuesday only heard 4 gobbles all morning all shock gobbled to crows etc. It was less than 100 yds away when he gobbled, and he never gobbled to my calls. Went out today a stayed right till noon, never heard a bird! Sucks driving 70 miles each way and not even working a bird.
  11. 28* at 5 am, heard 1 bird only gobbled 2x. My buddy killed an adult, we got lucky, stumbled onto 3 adults w/ 2 hens in a field. They never gobbled! After the shot they scattered. I later saw 1 adult w/ 1 hen in the same field@ 11:15. could not close the deal, and again no gobbling.
  12. I have had a couple of calls start to come unglued, but really I have been using the same 3-4 mouth calls for 3+ years.
  13. besides you know you have obligations on Mom's day!!
  14. I'm sitting in my living room on the computer, hoping the weather will improve, looks like I might get back out by Wednesday.
  15. I store all my mouth calls in a Tupperware container with a little mouthwash diluted with water. I have done this for years and I still use the same calls for 3+ yrs. I use a little call case from Penn Woods to carry my calls when in the woods, and I return them to the Tupperware and the end of each hunt. At the end of the season I just freshen up the mix and put the container in the fridge. I store my mouth guard for hockey the same way.
  16. the insulation is from an appliance store? what do they use it for? I am thinking of building an elevated deer stand/blind and it would be nice to add some insulation.
  17. you might have waited 1/2 hour or so and followed him, if he doesn't get with hens he might just turn around and come back in to your calls.
  18. heavy fog and rain dampened my birthday hunt, heard a couple gobble but couldn't close the deal.
  19. I've been shooting the Gold Tip pro hunter for years and they perform very well. I shoot an Elite GT500 65#, 29",400 grain arrows, and chrono 291 fps. In the effort to get the max. speed from my set up I have been thinking of trying a lighter arrow, I heard good things about Victory arrows lighter shafts(6-7 gpi) but they maintain stiffness. I would drop 50 grains add some speed and still have great kinetic energy. Seems like the perfect combination.
  20. congrats and happy birthday!, May birthdays... turkeys and cake can't beat that!!.. In 20 +years of hunting turkeys I've done it 1 time on my birthday, maybe this Thursday I can repeat.
  21. congrats, always nice when the birds cooperate!
