  1. I may be the odd one but holes through paper @ 40 yrds. tells the truth. Bottom line is.... you have to take the time and $$$ and shoot several loads to see what works best for you and to know realistically how far you can effectively kill a bird. I've heard of guys killing birds out to 60 yrds. they are either very lucky or their guns are much more effective than what i shoot.
  2. Went out yesterday to pattern my 870, thought I would give the new Vest a blind from Quaker Boy a try. The hood with the blind in it was difficult to manuver and get my head through the proper hole. I am going to have to do a lot of practicing with it or i am going to remove the hood. It sounded like a great idea to be able to camoflauge yourself but I don't want to be moving so much when setting up on a bird. And if you are a run and gun hunter you wouldn't have the time it takes to get in position and fiddle around with the blind. only time will tell, it might have it moments but i'm not sure I want to be carrying any thing around with me that I probaby won't use. the rest of the vest is great, light, and comfortable seat and back rest, not as many pockets as my last vest but I probably don't need to carry as much stuff as some (lawdwaz)!
  3. I shot some different loads through my 870 yesterday and the flight control shells 3" # 5, shot best with xxx full com n choke. the pattern was not as good through a full choke and much worse through imp. cyn. For the record I got the best pattern from 3.5" hevi shot #5 through the xxx full choke. It was a close tie between the flight control shells and 3.5" winchester supremes #5. I'm going with the hevi shot.
  4. went out yesterday heard and saw 1 longbeard, disapointing as by now I expected to hills to be filled with the sound of music.
  5. I hunt not to far from Canadaway, I was just down yesterday to scout, saw 1 longbeard all alone, didn't gobble much and the snow is still almost 2 ft. deep in pockets. hard to find tracks as it was 24* and the snow was hard. i've scouted Canadaway a coulpe of times, never got there early enough in the morning to listen for where they might be roosted. I seems the land is long and narrow making easy access from several roads. G man is right though I believe it gets hit hard on opening weekend and after week 2 you could probably have much better luck midweek.
  6. bottom line is always best to pattern your gun and know your limits.
  7. I didn't know about the less restrictive choke with flitecontrol, maybe I should resite my 870 with different chokes? I was always under the impression the tighter choke you can get the better for any turkey gun, who knew. :athough last year I killed a nice gobbler, when i went to clean my gun I realized I still had in my imp.cyl. choke! I must have used the gun for clay shooting last and forgot to check the ckoke before i went turkey hunting! Not much of a test though i killed that bird @15 yds. I think the wad hit him in the head and broke his neck.(just kidding)
  8. I guess gravity is not really a bad thing.
  9. Sorry to seem ignorant but what is the AT web site you refer to?
  10. The problem I have is i don't know if the replacement pin is the right shape. I don't have the original pin.
  11. This may have been posted in the past but I need to try to fix an old 12 ga. I need to locate a firing pin for a Noble 66J. I got one from numrich but it was too short Is it possible to take the replacement pin and make a new one? has anyone tried duplicating a firing pin?
  12. Letinmfly,You are a true sportsman.
  13. I feel your pain, it sucks to drive an hour or more, and not hear a bird sound off.
  14. beaver fever? lawdwaz i've had it for years! as for my vest i love the seat, space for thermo cell, calls, water bottle, etc. Just got the new quaker boy vest a blind. It is like a large fanny pack w/ shouder straps so it should be lighter and cooler. I probaby will remove the blind if it seems cumbersom.
  15. I know the fuel prices are going to take their toll but I do need to check out a couple of new spots. You can never have enough places to hunt turkeys.
  16. I've used federal flite control for the last 3 years with great pattens at 40 yrds. 3" #5's rem 870 w/ x-full turkey choke. I recently purchased 3.5" hevi shot to try. Haven't had time to pattern them yet. hope it only takes 1 shot as they are not cheap.! Get together with some buddies, each brings different shells, and you can try some of each, go with what patterns best. good luck
  17. that was a scary article! I have watched earthworms pull maple seeds into their hole, I assume its for food. I always thought earhworms were good for your gardens and lawns. Makes want to take a closer look at the understory in the hardwoods.
  18. I stumbled onto this forum and after reading it i am reminded that I have the last 2 years heads half done sitting out in the garage. I should get out the camp stove and finish a batch of deer brain soup!
  19. Jerky from Home depot? I might question what they use for fillers.
  20. Not as many lately as the bait and shoot program took out a lot of deer! It would be nice if they would allow some limited bow hunting in the town.
  21. Now that i seem to have the posting pics down.... here are some trail cam pics taken 1-1-13 through 2-6-13
