I know the feeling, I shoot a cva optima, stainless steel barrel, I love it as it is so easy to clean, like cleaning a single shot shotgun! But I recently had a problem with the firing pin. It didn't fire, missed a doe because of it. I thought the pin was frozen as it was 11 degrees and I was totally covered in snow, but after I cleaned the gun and checked into it I realized that I had been neglecting to properly clean the firing pin assembly. Pulled it apart only to find the firing pin, spring, and bushing are totally rusted. I cleaned them as best I could oiled them up and it works fine but I am going to order replacements, just to be safe. It was totally my fault and could have been prevented. I now know better.

Has anyone ever tried making jerky with bear meat? I have some ground bear meat from a friend and was looking to make jerky. Have good success with deer but didn't know if I should use any special seasonings. Also, I read on the net about trichinosis in bear, not sure if wild bear from Ny is subject to this. Any suggestions or recipe's would be great.

after further thought I believe they are probably fighting over who gets to eat the remaining pears. I've watched a doe fight off her offspring to eat first. Survival of the fittest.

I pulled my camera and have several videos of bucks fighting. Not full blown but pushing each other around for a bit. Not just yearlings, bucks going at it. Has anyone seen this kind of activity this late in the year? I'm not sure what to make of it but it looks like bachelor groups probably fighting over the last remaining pears. My camera is set up at a couple of old pear trees. Here are some pics I saved from the videos.

Who is ready for some gun action this weekend!
2012_taco replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Saw a real shooter on last Sunday @70 yds. could only watch him as he dogged 2 does, I am ready to reach out and touch one! -
I killed my best bow buck in the wind on the edge of a field gusts to 30+ and snow showers. I admit I had to be talked into sitting in the stand( my gut told me to go the other way and hunt deep in the valley)Thanks G-man. I also shot a nice non-typical on a windy afternoon 30mph. I set up on the down wind end of the woods. Now that I've triggered those memories I think I will get my butt going and hit the woods.

Sorry I'm a slow reader

what do you do with the ribs? I'm curious because I cut up my own deer and I don't use the ribs as there isn't any meat on them.

Monday AM, got put on a criminal trail, it sucks but I will get through it. Be in the woods on Sat./Sunday

This sucks, deer are starting to move and I can not get out. It's not like I wasn't busy enough at work; now I'm stuck in a court room, I have jury duty. I don't know when I will get out next.

I read the article and I can't help but wonder; if the DEC is thinking of shortening the southern zone by 1 week, and the Northern zone by 2 weeks, is it truly a management decision or are they just trying to make some room for a crossbow season? As for antler restrictions it seems to me and the reports seem to indicate that voluntary AR are already working to some extent. I believe in self imposed AR, if you can only hunt a few days a year then by all means fill the freezer. But if you can hunt almost the entire season then why not be picky?

No to both, the pic doesn't show it but he had a screwdriver in his hand.

The camera industry doesn't care that the cameras are stolen, most of us just go out and purchase a replacement. as for the original post ; I FEEL YOUR PAIN , had my garage broken into all my tools stolen (7K) while I slept.! Also this guy tried to steal my camera, fortunately he had the wrong screwdriver with him.

Happy B-Day, enjoy the day.

camo osb sheathing

I read those same reviews, I was wondering if any one had any real experience with the product. -
Has anyone seen or used any of this plywood. I saw it on line at Home depot it is camo clad 7/16" 4x8 sheets. thought it would make an easy to build ground blind. I haven't seen it locally but I think you can order it on line. About 14 bucks a sheet. http://www.homedepot.com/p/3-8-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Southern-Pine-Camouflage-Oriented-Strand-Board-Rated-Sheathing-721863/203519865#.UkX_lb7D-n0

I have a 15' ladder stand from Dick's, been using it for years but I never liked the permanent steel seat. It is cold and so I bring a pad to sit on and when you are standing the seat keeps you away from the tree and I like to lean against the tree to break up my form. So with the help of a friend who can weld, I cut off the seat and welded it to the floor platform and made a fold up padded seat. It works great and makes the stand so much more comfortable and now I can stand and hug the tree, best of both worlds.

How I built my arrows
2012_taco replied to nybuckboy's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
I checked my arrows for foc, and it looks like 9.7%. I shoot an Elite Gt500 set @ 65#, gold Tip pro hunter arrows, 100 grain fixed broadheads, and luminocs. I notice whenever I should with friends my arrows are always the hardest to pull out of the targets and are always in the deepest. If I did the math correctly I believe i'm getting over 70 ft lbs of kenetic energy. I shot through a chronograph at 291 fps. -
6 ladder stands and a Moultrie camera stolen
2012_taco replied to nybuckboy's topic in General Chit Chat
Bummer, I feel your pain!! Someone knew the stand were there. People SUCK!! This was definatly planned. I'm sure you are pissed, all your stands taken this close to the season. If you were close to me (western NY) and wanted to use them, I have a couple of hang on stands I'm not using this year, I would be willing to lend them if it helps you get back on tract. (you will of course put at least 2 chains and locks on them)LOL They probably took the trail camera because it captured them in the act. -
welcome to the site, be careful it can be addicting, good luck this season and hunt safe!

My wife would go but only take a camera, she loves the outdoors, camping, hiking, etc. but she doesn't eat the meat and doesn't understand why we have to kill them. I just tell her they won't stay on the wall if you don't shoot them. My daughter and wife both took the motorcycle safety course and got their licenses, it's great, I now ride solo. We combine weekend camping trips with the bikes in tow, even bring the golf clubs. If she's good I let her beat me on the golf course.LOL

Thanks Cabin for the reminder, and sorry for your pain. I always wear my safety harness and now I also have a life line at each of my stands (thanks Lawdwaz). When I was younger I thought I was invincible, but at my age now I realize my coordination and balance is not what it used to be. I have a friend who fell from his stand a few years ago, it ruined his whole season but he's ok now. Someone just the other day in Niagara County was not as lucky. http://www.buffalonews.com/city-region/police-blotter/authorities-identify-man-found-dead-in-woods-in-newfane-20130917
