that is scary looking, but I believe it is from an injury, It would be cool to see if it changes or gets bigger in next couple of years. only time will tell, dead buck never get bigger.JMO

I wish I had more time to practice, I belong to an archery club but only make it out there 4-5 times a year. I practice in my garage at home almost daily. When I can practice 30-40 yd shots I see that know I need more practice. I've seen guys that can shoot paper and 3d targets great but come unglued at the real thing. Bottom line is you have to know your limits and stay within them. Good luck to all.

I pulled the camera and all the pears are gone.

I agree 100%, I plan on getting out as much as I can, but I don't want to bump the deer out of the relatively small tract I hunt by going in in darkness with flashlights. I also believe that no matter how much you use scent control it is not perfect and the big guys start to pattern you and they disappear. Once the rut starts I'll pull out all the stops.

Ok I know from my trail cam pics that the bucks are going through the rear yard between 3:30 - 5:30 am. they have been hitting the pears every night. I believe they are bedding close by in the scrubs/hardwoods within 300-400 yds. behind the house. They spend the majority of the nights in the corn fields across the street. My thoughts are that trying to get in quiet in the dark will only spook them or bust them out, so I'm thinking my best bet is to wait until light and play the winds so I can stalk my way into my stand or just hit the stands in the afternoons. I also believe they are staging close by to enter the corn right after dark. Anybody have any better ideas?

I have the camera set for night only. The tree is close to the house so I don.t need pics of daytime activity.
-
Not sure, I believe it is a Bartlett. I wish it would hold pears longer.
-
Just pulled the card, pears are almost gone so the pics are less each day. will probably move the cam back into the woods on a heavy used trail and leave until season opener.

That was a cool video, having never done taxidermy myself, I thought he did a great job. Why does it take so long to get your buck back !haha.
-
Just goes to show you what age can do if you let them grow to 4-5 years old. looks like Deerwood golf course. Gee where did they ever come up with that name?

While bow hunting the last day of the season several years ago, I had a nice 10pt come in and when he got a few yds. away from a doe in heat scent bomb I hung on a branch he stopped and worked over a small bush for at least 5 minutes, I watched him from 40+ yds away, gave him a few doe bleats and soft grunts and he finally came in. I stuck him at 10yds. Here's the best part, while sitting in my stand just enjoying the beautiful morning and wasting time before starting the trac, a HUGE 8 pt came in from down wind of the bush the other buck was working, he stopped a few ft. from the bush and started snort-weasing. I first thought he sneezed! I watched him for about 10 minutes as he got real aggressive and must have snort-weased at least 50 times. Loud and very aggressive, I'm pretty sure he smelled the other buck and was calling him out for a challenge. I wish I had a video camera with me it was something I will never forget. Until then I thought those grunt-wease calls were just some more crap for us hunters to spend our money on but really wouldn't work. I couldn't buy one quick enough! But like everything else, grunting, rattling, etc. it must be used in the right situation and under the perfect conditions. Good luck to all this season and by all means be careful.

Checked the cam here are the latest, some of these guys are repeat customers.

I learned a few years ago that you don't need to worry about holding the pins steady, just put your pin on the target and then concentrate on just the target, your subconscious mind will put the pin on target. I started practicing this technic and almost instantly my groups improved.

are the mounts still available? Was thinking of putting a red dot on my 870 turkey gun, I think I could use the mount.

I gave up on a six pack abs, moved right on to 12 pack abs!

I lay my snack sticks right on the racks in the smoker, it has 4 racks and I get about 10 pieces on each rack. the top ones always get done first so I rotate them 1/2 way through. the tips on all of the racks seem to burn, I will try to hang them next time and see if that helps, not sure if I can get as much in the smoker that way?
-
I never go turkey hunting w/o my thermacell, never tried the holster and using it while walking, would be interested in your results.

I have a pic of a kid with a screwdriver in his hand, fortunately I used deck screws w/ torcs heads and he had a Philips screwdriver. I moved the camera deeper in the woods and dodged a bullet.

Culver can you post the summer sausage recipe? I do snack sticks in the smoker they are awesome although I tend to burn the tips, I don.t know if it's me or the smoker but, the ends always get too dry. Back to the OP I have done venison back straps on the smoker, I cut a pocket lengthwise in each piece marinate them for 1/2 hour in Montreal steak seasoning, vinegar, oil, and water.(equal amounts of each) then stuff hot Italian sausage in the pocket. add some more Mont. as a rub and smoke @200* for about 4 hours, until 150* internal temp. I use a probe thermometer. Let cool and slice. The sausage adds juice to the meat from the inside out, and the outside gets a nice bark. I can't make enough of them. Maybe I should try using roasts, as you only get 2 straps per deer.

wait until the first car / deer collision with a tagged deer. They can not reproduce but they are still out there. LOL I wish the local town board could be convinced that regulated archery could help. Here in Amherst it is just easier to pay overtime to the police to do bait and shoot.
-
That's actually a great idea to bad the people in charge would never go with it. Maybe we should start a campaign.

At my archery club we set up a paper target rack in front of a sand pile, works great, we have tree stand set up 25 yds away, you can also shoot from the ground at different distances, great practice. Just have to drive 24 miles each way to get there.
