  1. Geez the poor guy just asked a question. LOL Why all the tough stuff at him. But while we have our thinking caps on: Hey how about soaking them cotton balls in doe urine and use your grunt call like a blow gun to shoot them out of. LOL Just don't try a snort wheeze or you might suck one into your lungs. lololol
  2. Looks like a guy with his buck knife tried to make a mock rub that would impress who ever found it. And, hey thanks a lot Biz......you just cured me from ever eating chicken again. LOL!
  3. I'm on board with a big healthy 2.5 year old. He is real nice now, but If he gets through a couple more years he is going to be one impressive buck.
  4. I misunderstood Belo. I thought this was a deer you shot. Sorry about that! The point I was trying to make though was that it looked like a quartering away shot, not faced forward. As far as holding high or low goes when your shooting up close, my best advice would be for anyone here to try it for themselves. I shoot with just one pin out to thirty yards but limit myself hunting to twenty and under, usually much under, and when shooting further away hold pretty much on with my current bow (a little higher with my old bow), and lower if real close up. I try to keep my same form and just bend at the waist, but hold low. Like I said, best bet is for anyone who plans to take such shots to do a lot of practice from elevations the same as they plan to hunt and to practice on a deer target at different angles. It really gives you a sense of the real deal when you practice that way.
  5. Belo From the angle of your arrow it looks like you were not only high above, but also just behind that deer with him walking away from you. Correct?
  6. Shooting a deer from 15 feet up, facing you at 3-5 yards is a very difficult shot. Over the years I have taken several deer within yards of the base of my ladder or tree and it's not something I would recommend without a ton of practice on deer target under the same type of conditions. I would never suggest doing it at a deer quartering towards you. It is a recipe for disaster. That close I have one lunged them, spine shot them and even had one run off as the arrow went down through the back and out the chest leaving the arrow stuck in the dirt below him. At that close a range you need to aim LOW or you will shoot over the deer. In fact that close I actually see the leaves on the ground under the targeted spot. At least 40 years I have been bow hunting this has been my experience. The bigger issue now though is where is your deer? It sounds to me like you hit him at the top of the shoulder and passed either through the brisket or chest wall. You may have one lung shot the deer and that can be a real hard find because they can go a long way. If this deer was a nice one or not is really of little significance here. What is important is he was good enough to put an arrow into I hope he is good enough to go look for, and what type of shot to avoid in the future. I hope you find your deer. Good luck!
  7. Enjoy the time off, and good luck. When the smoke clears I hope the deer is big and the drag short!
  8. As hot as this weather is now, and as slow as the action in my world, I just bagged it for the weekend and headed back north. Good luck to you guys that can keep going this week. Hope things turn on for ya.
  9. Lawdwaz I'll try to keep on "track". To answer your question: I saw nothing as far as successful youth hunter deer take. But in fairness I really didn't do any looking. And I've heard nothing local about any deer taken by youth, yet. Again this morning there was an initial at the crack of dawn, ton of shooting, and nothing after about 8:30. By the way I was curious what would possess you to put "a couple hundred miles on the rig" at almost four dollars a gallon to see other people gut, drag, hang or prop up their deer? Do you work for the government in some capacity, DEC, etc. Well update from my stand...there was five fast shots just down the hill down the hill from me. Time to go. I just came back to spell check after whatever was getting shot at did not show up here. Lol.
  10. Having a "grow" morning. Lol. Forgot my hat and gloves, freaked around for 15 minutes in the dark so my bow sight wouldn't get bounced around only to then get to my stand and settle in to find part of my sight is missing. Brand freaking new and its on of those lighted deals. Not that I can use it lighted anyway because of my bifocals and always ful light out when I will pick the bow up anyway. But stil it's just the thought that I lost a part already, that frosts me! Oh and for the record, I just let a doe and her fawn walk past. Good luck this morning folks! And, thanks Grow....your escapades are starting to spread! Lolololol
  11. Bravo Doc! I could not have said it better. The sights, sounds, smells (some not so good...lol) the stories and memories of "deer camp".
  12. I did a little trimming myself after this mornings close encounter of the obstructed kind.
  13. Holy crap!!! I should have brought the sun screen. Feels more like a day at the beach! I thought I had to work this weekend and then got the pleasant surprise I was off, so I drove 3 1/2 hours home to hunt. Any of you guys in stand wearing a tee shirt like I am?
  14. My view is if "we" had kept doing "the same" the numbers would not have dropped to begin with. If couples didn't get divorced the first time things got tough leaving kids caught in the middle, if people didn't get so wrapped up in what's in it for me and put do much time and effort into getting it they had no time for their kids, if parents stopped using television and computer games as babysitters and instead introduced them to the outdoors, hunting and fishing in particular, I can't help but think we might not be seeing this decline. In my case it was my grandfather and uncles who stepped up for me and my brother. They did it because it was the right thing to do, and it was without any expectation of something in return or the benefit of some special season. I hunted with my uncles every regular season and each one was "special". Maybe that's why at 54 I'm still here perched in a tree taking it all in, and why my kids, brother in law, and nephews are also hunters. What we needed "was" more of the same. Just my thoughts from the pine tree! Lol
  15. Heard half dozen rapid shots just as getting light enough to see. Startled the heck out if me. I thought goose hunters or turkeys but was quite the fire storm. Now this post reminded me this other possibility. If that was someone being mentored, they need a new teacher.
  16. Nothing since the six point at about 7am. Windy, noisy, non stop crackles, pops and crunching. Absolutely beautiful fall day though.
  17. Little six point comes in gives me perfect angle... But on my wrong side!! He gets antsy and slips back into the brush. Holding my breath the spit goes down wrong pipe and pine tree comes alive with choking. Gotta live this deer hunting stuff. Lol!
  18. I just cant figure how "we" all got so hooked on deer hunting without the benefit of a much needed special "youth season".
  19. Chin up! Most of our swamps where we (you and I) hunt are at the bottoms and surrounded by cornfields. There is frequently brushy areas and tangled stuff, rock piles, old farm equipment etc., pushed up against these swamps to get the junk out of the way of the actual land being used to farm. I've glassed areas like this and watched buck hang back and let does and smaller bucks walk out into the fields first before stepping out. These brushy areas also have saplings and small trees growing in them and they are used heavily for rubbing. If there are no trees big enough for a stand and you don't like hunting from the ground, use a ladder stand if you have one. If I was home I would let you borrow one of mine. Good luck and go get em!
  20. I had a a few cups over the years that smelled and probably tasted like deer p1$$
