Gas and Oil Industry Courting Hunters
Mr VJP replied to mike rossi's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Nobody suggested we shouldn't question or research. What was said is we shouldn't make claims without proof. The anti gun crowd and the global warming crowd do it constantly to support their agenda and their claims have been proven false. There are plenty of fracking areas, all over America, where answers to claims can be proven, if they are true. As of this date, most anti-fracking claims remain accusations. In order to have a more intellectually unbiased opinion, you may have to pay tuition, and avoid anti-fracking seminars pushing an agenda. -

Half the story, yes. But the only half with factually quantifiable data, rather than speculation and accusation. The other side of the story has a lot of "what if's", "maybe's" and "suppose's". If the anti side is correct, they should be able to prove their claims. Until they can, I do not accept their claims. Like the Global Warming advocates, they need to prove their claims to justify their agenda. -
Why in heck would any responsible Elk guide, ask a first time Elk hunter to take a shot at a cow at 688 yards, no matter what the cartridge? I wonder how many videos were filmed by this guide that we will never see because the results were awful.

I really think the guy is gone. Seems to me he placed all of that stuff out in the woods to make the cops think that's where he is, but has probably left the state by now. If he was there, they would have found him by now, unless they are really lame.

If I still have a doe permit to fill after the first week of rifle season, any full grown doe is fair game. The fawns survive just fine at that point. I won't shoot fawns to fill my doe permit though. I did once near the end of the season and it turned out to be a button buck. The meat, which I expected to be very tender, was anything but. Turned out to be more like rubber when cooked. Anybody else find that to be the case with fawn meat?

Seems the bucks have gone nocturnal in your spot already.

It's not all of NE PA that's closed, just the area that they are looking for him. A few hunters will have to find other areas to hunt until they catch him, which may be the whole season the way things are going. They found pipe bombs, but none were set as booby traps. they expect they may find some booby traps, but haven't found any as of this date. I don't expect he set any booby traps, because he seems to want to avoid any casualties to anyone other than cops. I did see some background info on the guy. Apparently he has been shooting since he was a kid and has enough firearms experience to work with movie firearms experts as an assistant. He was also an extra in a movie that had him dressed as an East German soldier. That's where those photos of him in the E German uniform come from. I also saw something about his motive. It was reported the trooper he killed was somehow involved with his sister in law and he was seeking revenge over it. The claim was the trooper somehow did something to the woman and got away with it. I don't know if that's true on not, as the PA authorities squashed that real quick. I suspect something serious happened that we are not being told, for this guy to go off the deep end the way he has.

I think this post points out very clearly how the government isn't doing what is best for the country. Although the info makes us laugh, it's all true. So, why is it happening? Because it helps the government's agenda of higher dependency and less resistance to it. The fewer guns in civilian hands, the less the government has to worry about. The more people dependent on the government's handouts, the easier they are to control and get votes from. It's all about power and control and clearly shows how the government is not your friend.

Smells like anti-hunters to me.

You don't understand #3? Giving free stuff to losers means they will never learn to fend for themselves. We won't give it to animals, but we will give it to bums.

If they let the hunters have a crack at him, they probably would get him. They need all the help they can get. It's been 3 weeks for cripes sake!

NY #1 in worst state to deer hunt in
Mr VJP replied to HectorBuckBuster's topic in General Chit Chat
"The following states exhibit low harvest numbers, large numbers of yearling bucks harvested, low numbers of mature bucks, heavy hunter density, consistently adverse weather, or all of the above. Disclaimer: There is no single category that makes a state “bad” or “good” in regards to whitetail hunting, nor does every hunter in a given state share a similar experience. The data used below was compiled from the Quality Deer Management Association’s 2013 Whitetail Report. Average temperature data was found here, and snowfall data can be found here." "The Empire State ranks third in hunter density nationwide (15.1 hunters per square mile), and while harvest numbers are competitive nationally, 54% of all bucks harvested were yearling deer. In fact, only 18% of all bucks harvest in New York were three and a half years old or older (4th lowest nationally). This, combined with the highest average snowfall in the nation, means that New York has a large number of hunters enduring miserable conditions and a hostile political climate (in New York, you pay extra for your bowhunting “privilege”) to hunt a deer herd that is imbalanced at best." You can take offense at that information, but if you have ever hunted deer in really good deer hunting states, you would know what they're talking about. -
It seems you concentrate more at longer range. A 2" group at 100 yards is fine for hunting, but that should translate into 6" groups at 300 yards. Your 300 yard shooting is above average with 4" groups. I've seen this before and it always intrigues me. Some say the bullets stabilize after 100 yards, but I think the shooter just concentrates more on his technique when shooting long range. What do you think it is?

When attacked by idiots for being a hunter, I ask them where they stand on abortion. that usually shuts them up and causes them to retreat as fast as they can.

More like a rectum needing an enema!

Just bring it out like a real man does!

And then we can expect SAFE Act 3, 4, and 5. NY wants to disarm everyone!

I like 165 grain Boat Tail Soft Points for all around use. My rifle isn't as accurate with 150 grain bullets. It likes 180 grain bullets too, but those I keep for Moose and Elk.

Why no rifles in some shotgun only areas
Mr VJP replied to Borngeechee's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
"The Board of Supervisors of a county also can have a great deal to do with killing off such changes." That's what I was thinking. Maybe some of these areas won't look into changing because local politicians don't want it changed. -
The best thing to do would be to skin it to get it cooled as fast as possible, then quarter it and take the pieces out one at a time. It's a lot of hiking and very time consuming, but without extra people to help you drag it, you have no other option.

I wonder how much influence local politicians have over this issue. -
This is the load info for the 20" barrel I'm using. Nosler 210gr Partition W748 45.7 grains Velocity 2260 I would like to see chrono info as well. The point I'm trying to make is still the same. you are not getting all you can from the round with a very short barrel.
-
I never addressed the 22" barrel other than to say that is all I can find. I was directing my post at the 20" barrel saying I prefer the 24" overall. Honestly, I never expected such a benign post to elicit such a challenge. As far as 15% goes, the .338 Fed will give you about 2600 fps out of a 24" barrel, or so the manufacturers claim. But the 20" barrel will only give about 2250 fps. That means the 24" barrel is about 15% faster. (2250 x 15%) Short barrels lose more velocity per inch than barrels of 22" going longer. To each his own, but I still prefer to use that round for long shots where the .308 might need a little extra horsepower.
