I have yet another plan for Wednesday. I hope it ends quickly. By 630-700 the mosquitos were all out assaulting me. I had about 3 coats of cutter on and It was still impossible to sit still.

Yes. As long as you have to manually open the blade itself.

There is no legal length. The type of knife is what makes it legal or illegal.

It almost worked. I set up at the very tip of the peninsula, facing the field. Gave some soft clucks and a few quiet yelps. Nothing..I waited 5 minutes or so and called again. He sounded off to my right. a minute or so later the real clucks and yelps started…Damn! He flew down and landed just out of range, followed by 4 or 5 hens .He's a nice big tom. They wanted nothing to do with my calls so I just shut up and hoped for the best. No such luck. They slowly made there way to the far corner of the field, right past the spot I set up at a few days ago LOL!! Then 2 more birds joined them from across the opposite field. I think they were jakes. They eventually moved off but it was a blast to watch them scratch around and feed. A deer even joined them and was feeding right along side the birds.. A few times the big tom flapped at the little guy and the deer would make a couple bounds and go right back to feeding..I never saw that before. Funny.

Rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy…...

Im dong the same thing. The prick Im after has been roosting in a wooded peninsula that juts out into a cut corn field, from the woods. I have been setting up along a hedgerow opposite of him. about 80-100 yards off. He has gotten close but not close enough. This morning he was alone for once (i think) He stood off and wanted me to go to him..As if!!.. Going to leave a little earlier and come in from the back side of the peninsula. Gonna set up near the very tip, closer to his fly down. Might have to skip the decoy ..don't want to get busted setting it up,,,,,,, not sure yet. Hopefully he'll be beakless shortly after he touches down. Good luck,,

Thank you and all the rest Pygmy. Some will just never get it. Thats just the way it is. For what its worth….Everyone who matters knows the difference between people like you and " the enlightened ones"

Not to carry on (sorry) but I remember the last tom the old man took. It was 2 years before he passed. He was getting on and we were all nervous about him going out alone. His wife called me at about 8 AM to ask if I was coming out to hunt. I knew she was nervous because the old man went out alone. To make her feel better I said I was running late and I would be right out. Before I could get my stuff together and head out, the old man called me. I asked how he made out and I remember him saying.."shot that prick right in the face". It was a big ass tom, and the last game he ever took…. LOL!!

Maybe he's really a super crime fighter called away on urgent national business. Or maybe he's just busy and doesn't really care that much about this site . I hope its the first one. How cool would that be??

Tomorrow is another day. Head back out and have at it. I'll be out at first light trying to make some noise. Been trying to figure out the same few toms since May 1st. Thats what makes it fun…..The old timer I use to hunt with, never called them Toms. He called them "Pricks"..LOL!… Good luck

If you can get away with it, and you haven't packed it in yet, do a big semi circle, switch calls and give a few yelps in a different pattern then you have been using. Then just wait a half hour or so. Maybe give an occasional cluck.

I have had great action but I still can't get the big boys off the hens. Even this late. Thursday I watched 2 hens tow away a nice tom. Never got closer than 80yds or so. I have called in the same 2 scrawny jakes twice now. They barley have beards. Trying again in the morning. Im going to try a little different approach….AGAIN! Good luck to all the die hards..

The best woodsman/deer hunter I ever had the pleasure to know hunted with us, and took deer, well into his 80's because he used his ATV.

If you walk in "really early" just listen first. Set up in a likely spot and do some soft yelps. If nothing is going on , say 20- 30 mins or so after daybreak then take a slow walk and try locater calls. Yes owl calls work. I think almost anything works. I have gotten them to sound off to an old duck call. I have heard a ton of birds go off on circling crows that were calling…..Just this morning I heard a tom gobble to geese that were calling as they were circling the cut field, just after first light……... Good luck..

Scope announcement.

Great news..I think it was posted here a couple weeks back..It will be interesting to see if little king Andy complies. -
Do you think that the same person who is an ethical hunter who enjoys and values his time in the woods and who also legally and safely uses an ATV is still an "outdoorsman"?

We had a good one last night too. lots of lightning and heavy rain. Lost power at some point early this morning. It was back on by the time I got up at 630.
-
Pretty much the same thing as the Ford Crown Victorian, that are used as police cruisers.
-
Glad it ended well. Don't even drive it to the shop…have it towed.

They have been fairly vocal around me and I have seen some good toms but always with hens. I haven't been out in a couple days and I can't get out again till Wed. My buddy tagged a slob yesterday. He said they were gobbling good and he didn't get out until 830. The bird he shot and another tom came right into his calls, on a string. So it sounds like its heating up a little.
