    Tag exchange

Yep that's the way it goes, i always looked to fill the freezer with upstate deer and hunt for a wall hanger here on the island, however last year my neighbor gave me a steak from his buck he shot on Long Island, and that was one delicious piece of venison.

    Tag exchange

Now if you shoot a buck upstate you really burn your chances of taking a buck on the Island, unless you want to burn your reg/rifle tag on on LI buck

    Tag exchange

agreed, i think this may have the reverse effect that they hope for (thinning herd) my neighbor for example is a LI big buck hunter, really takes some impressive animals. he only shoots the does to get the "earn a buck tag" with the policy change he will prob take his 2 bucks and quit years past he has taken 4 or so bucks and 4 or so does
  4. OK i stand corrected, i thought it was suggested than no bow course was needed... my mistake thank you for the clarification ( i learn something new every day)
  5. this cannot be correct as a Bow License is required to take deer with a bow on Long Island, however your regular season tag can be used to tag a deer as well (you still require a bow license)
  6. should answer the question Mandatory Hunter Education: A hunter education course is required for persons who cannot show proof that they have ever possessed a hunting license. The general course is a minimum 10 hours in length. DEC honors hunter education certificates and sporting licenses from all other states and countries. Mandatory Bowhunter Education: Hunters wishing to bowhunt for deer and bear must take an additional 8 hour minimum bowhunter education course. DEC also honors bowhunter education certificates issued by:
  7. as it's written appears to recognize it as archery season "Present hunting opportunities exist in the form of an archery season from October 1 to December 31, and a three week shotgun and muzzleloader season in January."
  8. How is it that the Bowhunter Saftey course is not required to Bowhunt on Long Island?
  9. I agree on the Antlerless issue as i had heard about this being put in place since Dec. of last year
  10. Shawnhu... it has everything to do with proofreading (and not your speculation that it's a pilot program) this is what was on the DEC website last week (it has since been corrected) Junior Hunters may also use a crossbow during the youth deer hunt. (October 12-14, 2013)
  11. DEC isn't to good at proofreading their content I think it may still say Crossbows can be used during the Youth Hunt
  12. YES NOW READ THE NEXT LINE........ Bonus DMPs may be used only in the WMU for which they are issued and may be valid for antlerless deer only or deer of either sex, as indicated on the permit. For 2013-14 all Bonus DMPs will be valid only for antlerless deer
  13. Unfortunately it will decrease the "deer control" in Suffolk county as it will no longer be earn a buck for extra tags i know a lot of guys that wouldn't take a doe if they could not get a buck (either sex) tag in return
  14. Bonus DMPs will be available in WMUs 1C, 3S, 4J, and 8C during the 2013-2014 hunting seasons. Check station information will be updated soon. All Bonus DMPs will be Antlerless-Only.
  15. Ah, yes. however that does not state that they give you an "either sex" tag as the replacement as in years past, looks like they will just issue another "doe tag" last year for example you could shoot a doe with your DMP tag and receive an "either sex" tag if you shot a buck that tag was essentially dead.
  16. can you post the DEC link of where you found that jjb4900?
  17. I usually go for 4F (i have preference this year) 2nd choice 1C Oct 1st i grab 2 more 1C Did they stop the either sex (replacement) tag when you shoot a doe in 1C this year? I Heard there were talks of it.
  18. I'ts a waste to not grab 1C, You are awarded a preference point if you are not picked on your first choice, 2nd choice has nothing to do with preference points Preference points are won and lost on first permit selection only. If you receive a DMP in your first choice WMU, all available preference points will be used. If you do not receive a DMP in your first choice WMU, you will receive a preference point for the following year.
  19. Antler size between northern and southern is up for debate, long island has some of the largest racked deer in nys, ask has the largest body size and some great mass, southern tier has smaller racks unless they are farm fed, or around plots. Take a look at adkhunter.com
  20. there are still some properties on Long Island that don't open until Nov. 1 bucks are much harder to come by in the NZ, but they do tend to be larger in both body size and racks compared to Southern Zone
  21. Ah the joys of a new bow, just UPS the excitement level like tying a new fly before a day out fishing, in the 20 years I've been bowhunting I've gone from a whitetail 2, to a high country Excalibur, parker ultralite, to now my Hoyt am32, last year i came to the conclusion buying a year old bow at 1/2 price is the way to go.. This industry depreciates waaaay to quick
  22. Congrats, good choice Hoyts rock, my Alphamax 32 is still going strong
  23. I generally hunt upstate for opener of bow weekend then i hunt every weekend here on Long Island that i'm not upstate Veterans day weekend (4 days) (bow upstate) I head up Friday before opening day rifle and come home Wed. and then the last weekend of rifle upstate then shotgun on long island then rest...
  24. Around Verterans day is always a good time to be out
