Requirement During the period September 1 through the last day of February, hunters are required to wear at least 400 square inches of fluorescent orange clothing above the waist and visible from all sides. An orange hat, in addition to a coat or vest, is strongly recommended. The following hunters are exempt from this requirement: Archery Deer Hunters during most seasons, Archery and Firearms Turkey Hunters, Waterfowl Hunters while hunting from boats, duck blinds, or other stationary positions, Crow Hunters while hunting from blinds or a stationary position, Raccoon and Opossum Hunters when hunting from 1/2 hour after sunset until 1/2 hour before sunrise, and Landowners while hunting deer on their own property. Family members are still required to wear fluorescent orange. Persons hunting with deer damage permits are also subject to the fluorescent orange requirement. Ct Requirement is twice the NJ requirement!

Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)

Doc's humor is refreshingly subtle, too bad you cannot appreciate it! -
The problem where I live, is that landlords have built illegal apartments (sometimes more than one) in residences that are zoned for only single family usage. The landlord pays taxes on the assessed value of the single family residence only and does not report the income from the illegal apartments. Many of such renters in the illegal apartments have children in the Public schools. The cost to educate these children is born by landlords in each particular district. Homeowners who have homes which are legal pay a diproportinate tax. In addition, consider the cost for additional sewer and sanitation services. The point is, the system is broken and needs to be fixed so that it is equitable to all.

Its not an attack, just a natural knee jerk reaction to your comments. After all, its a public forum. You don't have to go out of your way to impress anyone, you have already made a significant impression. Thank you -
The landlord / owner is the one paying the taxes. So in essence the renter is paying the taxes. True, the landlord is paying the taxes. However the inequity comes into play when the landlord rents an illegal apartment, does not report the income, and the tenant has children that attend public school. Where I live this topic is a political powder-keg which no politician is willing to address.

Its impossible to believe for one New York minute that someone who passionately believes that B/O is a "gimmick" could have the self control as to not preach such a point of view to a group of impressionable students. By the way, lets see your Hunter Safety Instructor of the Year award. -

I am glad to hunt in the southern zone. Perhaps you can can diagnose all the posters who disagree with you. Flame away! -
Thanks for the info. These statistics are dated. I wonder what the consensus thinks now!

You are probably right, nevertheless when you become tired of shooting basket racked 2.5 year old deer after high grading has been completed you probably will become a proponent of additional restrictions (beam width restrictions) in order to fill the empty wall space in your home. Keep California dreaming!

I was watching a hunting program recently and someone on the program said something to the effect that because the doe population so outnumbers the buck population, "big bucks" because of hunting pressure are content to mate nocturnally with does. The need to bump /chase does is a waste of energy for mature bucks because of the overabundance of doe. Is the answer to seeing more bigger bucks is to kill more does and increase competition thus giving hunters more of a chance to kill a big buck? Well, I do not know, LOL. Its been my experience, that I see an inordinate amount of does compared to bucks, despite what the DEC says " the population of does-bucks is 50/50". These days, I do not know what to think!

The processor which you refer to was located in Oakdale, LI. Despite their indiscretions (alleged) they continue to accept deer for donation/processing to food banks. To date I have not heard if they were found guilty of any game violations. Please post something that definitively refers to whether or not the processor was guilty of any game violations.

Warmest Hunting Boots ?
wztirem replied to fasteddie's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
As I tend to sit all day in the same spot, I have a pair of boot blankets which go over my Rocky boots. Usually( when it is freakin cold), I take off my boots (put them a plastic bag) and put my feet directlty in the boot blankets supplemented by several hand warmers. I am good for the whole day! -
I live on Long island! You do not want to know how much I pay! Envious of all you upstaters!

This is a pretty funny thread " When do you typically get a buck", perhaps it should have been "when do you typically get a chance to shoot a deer"! If it was that easy to kill a buck, I would probably take up knitting. The reason I hunt hunt is to be able see a deer, enjoy the whole hunting experience and to reunite with fellow hunters/friends etc.Being able to kill a deer of my choice when the opportunity presents itself is the ultimate reward.

Lat year I bought and installed a wood stove in my home, a River Catskill Model, free standing 35K BTU. I live on Long Island and the stove has been a tremendous savings. I am lucky enough to get my firewood for free. On the other hand, the price of firewood down here has gone through the roof. My stove burns well seasoned firewood very cleanly. The problem in my area is that many local (close) residents who have stoves and fireplaces burn unseasoned wood and who knows what else (sign of the times) and thats a problem. Its just a matter of time before the authorities will begin enforcing clean air requirements for on cold nights the surrouding air smells terribly.

This is a great topic! I brew beer at home. Usualy the outcome is not what I expect. I give a lot of credit to the home brewers who can make a drinkable brew.
