    Who would

Hunting is hunting! I would be out there hunting.
  4. Yes it is!! really quiet - other who shoot with me where very surprised!
  5. What I read and learned from others is that the older engines have hoses and gaskets that will dissolve partially with the use of ethanol enriched gasoline. Hence when the gas sits for a long time the rubber and gasket material clogs the small orifices. The newer engines have hoses and gaskets that resist the ethanol and do not leave any residue. I can see how this make sense. What I don't know is when did every engine manufacturer switch to ethanol resistant materials?? My 1987 Evinrude 9.9 HP is one of those that must have parts that leave residue. Two years in a row I had to remove the carb and clean it. Now, I just unhook the gasoline hose at the engine and let the engine run till it stops. This seems to work just fine. My Husquervana chain saw seems and a small 4.5 HP lawn mower do not seem to have a problem with the ethanol gas. I started my chain saw this weekend after it sat for about 3 months with old methanol gas. But just to be sure I emptied the gas tank and let the saw run until it was out of gas. My lawnmower, (4 cycle) seems to be no problem.
  6. I carry my Swiss Army Hunter knife 95% of the time. I bought the red one in Germany about 15 years ago and using the gut blade and saw does wonders on a Whitetail deer. Best knife I ever had besides my Buck 110! That's a quarter next to the knife to give a size comparison. The deer on the knife is a Roebuck.
  7. I like the TOWER STANDS.....don't have one now, but would like to build one too. Post some pictures as you build and finish.
  8. Great pics and good looking bucks, I almost thought you were taking pictures behind my camp. Welcome to the group!
  9. By the way - the two brothers were about 48 & 52......
  10. Nope, not an instructor in the pure sense of the definition, but when I invite people to hunt with me, I do instruct if they are willing to listen and learn. About 7 years ago I hunted one time with a person from this area and who was leasing a small cabin near my camp. I noticed that during our discussions he seemed awful anxious to shoot a deer as he tells me he had not for over 10 years. Fast forward to the next weekend where he and his brother both were hunting on the other side of our valley. Right around dusk, he heard noises coming through the bush. Deer....no, it was his brother. He shot him square in the chest with a 30-06. He was dead before he hit the ground. Helicopter and state police arrived.......well you can imagine the rest. It was a mess. His lawyer called me and asked whether I would testify that the reason his brother got shot was attributed to him not wearing hunter orange!. I told the lawyer that I did not agree, he shot his brother because he did not identify his target and was anxious to shoot a deer! Once I said that he did not ask me to testify. Moral of this real life experience taught me that mistakes are made because of human error, lack of training, anxiousness, nervousness, etc. Could HO have prevented this unexplainable death? Probably/Maybe - but we will never know. I really believe that some people are not meant to be hunters -they don't have the mental capacity. Mandating HO is another way to provide an aid to those same hunters. I am very thankful that the 100,000 acres I have access to has limited entry points and most hunters will not undertake the energy or challenge to hunt this area. I am so thankful for the Adirondack Park - 6 million acres of public and private lands forever protected from untethered development! Check out Bloomingdale in Google Earth or Maps/Google and you will see what I mean.
  11. Doc - can you point me to where I can read this data? Seriously - no sarcasm here. As far as people becoming conditioned to shoot things that are not orange, there is no data to support that.....none. ... OK, there may not be any data, but that does not mean it does not occur. Data can be used to support many theories, but if the data acquisition is flawed, well the outcome may be flawed also or just support what the initiator wants you to believe. Having not read the data (I hope to) I can only rely on my logical approach and what I have learned over the past 50 years. I wonder how many non-hunters, those not wearing HO and traversing hunting lands and territory got shot? Will a law be coming soon that will require any living person or animal to wear HO during the hunting seasons? Just wondering - not hoping.
  12. It's not the first time...political correctness is not always my forte. Up here in the real "Upstate" New York or as we call it the North Country, HO is not required and I hope it never is. Do I wear it? Sometimes I do as it depends where and with whom I am hunting with. If I do wear it it will be a small bandana wrapped around my hat. My objection to HO is that it should not be legislated to make is mandatory. If you believe HO is needed, go for it. I have never criticized anyone for wearing it. However, screw up while hunting with me and you will get my on the spot hunter's wrath AND will think twice before I invite you to hunt with me again. If I don't agree with someone's hunting method or style, I stay away and rather hunt alone. In some areas of the state, "It's the bark of the town"...
  13. Hunter Orange (HO) trains people to look for hunter orange! So the LOGIC can be: if you are a hiker, mushroom picker, or just a non hunter person out and about on public land you may be a target and get shot at because the shooter is only looking for HO. NOT IN MY BACKYARD WHERE I HUNT! I don't look for HO! I look for animals that I can shoot. Granted, HO stands out well and can be seen over a long distance and has helped overt tragedies. That in itself does not make it a fool proof. I still look for animals that I can shoot. The basic concept is target identification. I hunted in Germany and Spain, neither require HO. In fact their hunting garb is muted greens and browns. The difference though is their hunter training program. It took me 6 months to get a license and I had to graduate from a very rigorous course. Bottom line was: Idiots, non-learners, cheaters do not apply - you will fail!. Here we can go into K-Mart, WallyWorld and pay our money to get a license after taking a 1 day safety course. Big Difference. Not saying we should have the same rules as other countries...BUT then again we should admonish and correct those we hunt with that seem to be a little non-conforming. If we do not do it, our friendly, know it all government will make HO laws. It is almost the same as putting "Danger: This firearm may cause injury and or death" on some rifles and shotguns I have seen in the stores. DUH - really. The next thing we will see is HO vests and hats that are embroidered with, "Warning: Not wearing this while hunting may cause death" Give me a break! As in every other activity you need to fully learn your craft. IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET!!
  14. I found one marina in Saranac Lake that sells non-ethanol gas. $4.99/gallon. For my 1987 9.9 Evindrude I just unhook the gasoline hose and let the carb (bowl) run out of gas. This weekend I will need to check my Husquervarna chain saw to see if I can get it started as it has been sitting with fuel for over 3 months without running. It is a 3 year old model and I have heard that the newer engines are supposed to have non-metal parts that do not react with ethanol. Supposedly the older (pre-ethanol) engines have hoses, gaskets and other material that break down with ethanol. Hence the residue gets stuck in the small engine nozzles and holes in the carab(s)It has been siting with ethanol. I still may buy a couple of ethanol free gas and run it in my 9.9 and chain saw.
  15. I pass by your town on my way to visit with our son who lives in Hunter, NY. Welcome to the group
  16. Thanks guys.....now I really feel old! (or just dam thickheaded!)
  17. Yup - I had same problems with my Outboard Motor. 9.9 Evinrude 1987 vintage. Rebuilt and cleaned the carbs every year for 2 years. Now I run the motor until all the gas in the carb bowl is empty. No more problems with the ethanol gas! Although my small 4.5 HP push lawn mower is a 4 cycle, I will start to do the same. A little more difficult as the tank holds more gas and it will have to be emptied first. Also I use Startron - BUT - leaving the ethanol gas sitting in the carb bowl even with the Startron still gummed up my carb. Thanks Uncle Sam!

    Who would

Hunting is the driver for me....doesn't matter what. Good game management practices will tell you that does and fawns need to be culled just as well as bucks. I hunted in Germany and they practice this year round. You would be amazed at the quality and quantity of game animals there.
  19. Okay I give up. What the h_ _ _ is AR? Maybe I am getting to old for this but all writers should spell out the meaning of all abreviations when first used in a paragraph. Not all of us are savy. For example: For your Information (FYI) some of us readers are s_ _t out of luck (SOL) when reading your letters (LTRs)
  20. Welcome to the group. I love to bird hunt - grouse, woodcock, pheasant, especially with a dog.
  21. Geez----light nocks! What will they think of next? I like my 200 yards of bright orange string.....takes me right to the deer. Next week I will tell you about the pheasant retriever system for my shotgun.
  22. I have a PSE Stinger II that I have used for 3 seasons. Great bow, fast @ 304 and very affordable. Cabellas sells the complete ready to shoot package for 299.xx. Also you will find them at Gander Mtn. All you need to buy is ARROWS, POINTS, RELEASE, CASE It is a very quiet bow. My son shoots a Mathews and he could not believe how quiet mine is compared to his. OK, the Mathews is faster, but speed is not everything. Quietness is king! Check out all the bows in the price range you want to spend. Then practice and practice and practice.
  23. Got home this morning from camp where I spent Friday and Saturday painting. Checked my trail cam but nothing on this time. I check once a week - but then I look out the kitchen window and see a doe feeding right by my boat and car. I have seen more deer todate then ever before......
  24. Nothing much.......put up another trail cam....reloaded a bunch of 16 Gauge shells..will start to shoot my bow to get back in shape...major surgery in March did not help. At 62 it takes more time then when I was 32!
